  • @ElNingyou
    @ElNingyou 7 ปีที่แล้ว +53

    Maybe it's just because I'm older, but the new section feels much smaller than the original. I remember the square that connected the old food court to the section where Montgomery Ward stood (assuming you didn't take the shortcut through TJ Max) felt massive and sprawling. There was so much to see that was of genuine interest to middle-class shoppers. Many of the new stores either seem to cater to wealthier shoppers (and tend to be fairly empty most of the time), offer weirdly niche products, or are just redundant clothing outlets. I guess the Internet has transformed what makes for a financially viable store. The new mall is pretty but just... not as interesting.

      This is so true!!!!! It just feels weird walking through that mall now. I drove through the parking lot the other day to see if I could buy a cinnabon and the security told me, they are tearing it all down and remodeling!! I guess this is their next phase of remodeling the mall while they can during this pansemic

    Thank you for this video. I truly miss the old Del Amo Mall. I've been going to the Mall since the early 70s. Every year my Mom took me to visit Santa and the Easter Bunny. We used to love to go to King Table Buffet and eat all you can for a little price, they had the best fried chicken a buffet could ever offer and their soft serve ice cream machine was the best!!!!! I miss Aladdins Castle as I became a teenager and played a lot of video games, then would go right out of there, next door to McDonalds and I miss the ice cream stand that used to sell homemade lemonade and ice cream bars dipped in chocolate and or nuts if you chose. So many great memories. I miss shopping at Orbachs!!!! (that goes to show you how old I am!!) Orbachs was where Marshalls was located. Del Amo mall had Universal Movie theatre and you could go see a movie once your feet got too tired to walk anymore and enjoy a box of expensive popcorn. It was a great great mall to go to back in the 80s and the 90s. I loved shopping at PJ's and Catherines and even Sears and JC Penney's back in the day and we cant forget Montgomery Wards!!!! My mom bought my 6th grade graduation dress from there as I graduated from Lomita Fundamental Elementary School, Class of 1980!!! So proud! I miss being able to sit in the middle of the mall and just watch the elevator go up and down, and watch people go back and forth. It was a great place to people watch. Let's not forget Hickory Farms on the 2nd floor!!! Where you could get all the free samples of beef stick you wanted. I loved the smell of that woodsy/country looking place and the cute little old ladies dressed in their red gingham uniforms. Great times. There was a candy place called Ms. Helene's Chocolates that was pretty good as well. See's candies was always the best, but Ms. Helene's had more exquisive chocolates such as lemon crème filled covered chocolates!!!! LOL Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many great memories at Del Amo. Now, I walked into that mall in 2019 and looked around and I felt like I was on a completely different planet!!!! I had to say out loud WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT IS THIS? AND WHY?? The stores are catered totally to the young and ritzy!!!! They are truly not catered to the middle class, used to be 80s and 90s shoppers. I felt like I had landed onto the Millenium Planet and was lost in space and time somewhere. Well, all I know now is to go to certain stores. I noticed even Macy's is not that crowded or filled with customers like they used to be, I guess because everyone finds its more efficient to just shop online versus going into the stores the old fashion way. It's really sad, that the old song is true: EVERYTHING MUCH CHANGE, NOTHING STAYS THE SAME! THE YOUNG BE COME THE OLD AND MYSTERIES UNTOLD!!! So very true. Between Del Amo Mall and Old Town Mall in Torrance, I'm lost. Thanks for sharing.

    Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but the South Bay Galleria was actually more popular back in the day, so I recall spending a lot more time there. It could've also been cause I lived closer to the galleria lol
    But those curved red and white checkered benches next to the Cinnabon are forever burned into the memories of my childhood. I love that retro 70s/80s feel of that section of the mall. Now it's all white and smooth and marble and bland like the rest of it. The new look is more simple and elegant, which is I'm sure what they were going for, but the old design had so much more character and you just remembered it.
    RIP old Del Amo. We will always keep you, your white park benches, gumball machines, frankly ugly tiled floors 😂, downstairs Burlington Coat Factory, and curved red and white checkered benches in our hearts

I got the phrase "Heavens to Murgatroid" from the early 60's TV cartoon character "Snaggle Puss". That was one of his catchphrases. Thanks for your follow up comment !! :-)
