As a thousand sons player, we would like to have a librarian dreadnought too. It would fit the lore quite well.
It's so annoying that it exists in 30k (Contemptor-Osiron Dreadnought) but of course GW won't let Chaos have nice things

I believe Magnus gave Sanguinius the STC for librarian dreadnoughts since Sanguinius was open about being a psyker like magnus and they could relate.
@Bravadous I thought inwas more to do with the BA are the only ones that still have access to the tech. Like the dark angels and terminator based plasma cannons

That’s a really funny way of saying they’ve been absolutely fucking gutted.
My favorite combo is a Phobos Librarian in an Eliminator squad; I can run around and snipe threats while remaining hard to hit
The only downside here is, that Eliminators can only run in units of 3, if the could have 6 models, it would be much cooler, with 3 models its a very pricey combo for 3 models hat only shoot
Been running this combo with Las Fusils in the Vanguard detachment to great success. If you play with y’all enough ruins, you can set them up high up and keep them stationary. They won’t be able to be shot at all and if they can be you’re doing something wrong. Plus, with the Strike From the Shadows strategem and the plunging fire rule for ruins, you’re looking at S9, AP-5. Not gonna take out the toughest things in the game but will almost always trade up over the course of the game.
@Silverdragon83X I run then with Las Fusils and the carbine. 2 36" Meltaguns on effectively a 12" move with lone op and infiltrator is solid damage imo. Not competitive I guess, but I think it's just on the edge. I see them almost as eradicators where you don't need a delivery system to make good use of them.
i do this with my deathwatch in a spectrus kill team.
Did that with the new Anvil Detachment and had some very annoying infiltrated snipers that didn't need to move and couldn't be shot at.
"Held back by the squads they can join" is essentially the #1 problem this edition. Every one of my factions has the "This character would be great if only they could join this squad" problem.
I actually like the Primaris Librarian with the Infernus Marines. They have to get danger close with their pyreblasters, and can be especially fun when paired with a Repulsor. Makes them a REAL pain to shift.
I do miss the ability to pick spells though, even if the new system is easier to balance. I don't miss the psychic phase as a whole, but it would be nice to have some flexibility still for the unit
This is something I was thinking of running too. Libby makes the infernus perhaps survivable enough to get 2 rounds of immolation off
If mephiston could be with damn well any other unit other than the crap he’s stuck with he would be really really good but no he’s stuck with literal garbage like other them for cheap bodies. I’ve never seen anybody actively use assault intercessors in any meaningful way. because of that he is a non-option. I’d rather take a chaplain than him. The Libby dread is a dream perfect for what he’s build around he’s an awsome movement unit even if he couldn’t do damage I’d play him
I used the Mephiston with assault intercessors combo once. It’s ok but probably not competitive. Mephiston kicks ass though

So, Psykers are one of my favorite things in 40k, and since Space Marines are often a metric by which 40k is measured, it was neat to see how they each bore out. I could still readily complain; I still HATE that only Blood Angels get the Psyker Dread, when EVERY Grey Knight is a Psyker, and numerous other Chapters have their own Librarian traditions, and I'm still a bit torn with how psychic stuff works, in 10e, but most of that is neither here, nor there, and I'm glad several of them still work well.
In their next Codex I'd love to see Mephiston either a) be able to lead Bladeguard or maybe Jump Ints (if he maybe had some form of Wings of Sanguinius active all the time) or B) go back to being a lone operative style chraracter bit have an absolutely killer statline, really livebup to that Lord of Death monicker.

I haven't used any librarians, but my brother plays GKs and had his brotherhood librarian roll 2 ones back to back on vortex of doom 😂
The thing you have to watch out for with librarians is that anti psyker weapons target the whole unit they are leading. That can get quite messy....
And some anti psykers are insane. I took down my buddy's Keeper of Secrets in one turn of shooting and melee from my Culexus, the poor daemon melted back to the warp.

Sadly, but mephiston is in custodes territory now. He is a living god, which can not be balanced properly. Damn even in lore I still have questions why he did not help Dante to banish Angron properly. Lion book hah./ arks of omen.( chaos book)
Yeah, god forbid GW let a cool-looking BA or DA character outshine one of their precious Ultra Smurf ones by being useful in the units he makes sense in.
Gw just can not produce enough stuff and sadly for them people do not like Smurfs that much. Papa Smurf and Titus behave like a black Templar with rage mode on/off, not a typical master of none Smurf.
@@BloodyArchangelus it's just frustrating that one only Named Character Librarian worth taking, even worth building a unit AROUND, is a Big Blue Boyscout, when they could easily fix that just by updating what units others could attach to (and maybe dropping the SW librarian down 10 points). Sometimes it feels like Matt Ward is haunting GW still.

Tigurius just makes BladeGuard that much more tanky with -1 to hit and the 4+ FNP. AND free heroic intervention or interrupt
Bonus is also the 4+ FNP vs Mortals can prevent you from taking damage from a failed hazardous roll
The Phobos Librarian with Eliminator and using Architecture of War makes a great sniper combo

Coming here from the future to help those looking back like me. As of the most recent dataslate when I’m posting this (July 2024), the normal Librarian is a reasonable take for Dark Angels to lead Inner Circle Companions and giving them the save.
I've been running the terminator librarian with the deathwing command squad. The combo of heavy weapons and different melee gear is nice with the addition of the apothecary to bring back dead models.
me being a grey knight player, after the first time i used him, his unit just became a unit of target priority. would be nice to see another video for psykers from other armies. like the various sorcerors from chaos or various brain bugs
Am I correct that if you roll a 1 you can still use his FNP to mitigate some dmg?
@@livingbox i would say yes, in the Rules Commentary on warhammer community, PG 10, Psychic Attacks, Any mortal wounds inflicted by an ability that has the ‘Psychic’ tag are also Psychic Attacks which is what Sanctic Hood protects against. unless there's another rule that overrides this
In gladius detachment you can stick foot librarian in a crusader squad to give all 20 Marines a 4++

In the case for Tigurius, the app would suggest he can lead bladeguard and the ability that provides free overwatch allows you to use free heroic intervention or counter offensive instead. You may not be able to get off as much of that viscous shooting as you like but i’d say its a good synergy. (Please let me know if this is an error on the app’s part or outdated)
With the 4++ from storm shields and tigurius FNP and other buffs it makes for a impressively tanky unit
GW not allowing Ezekiel to lead Primaris squads yet gives me hope (maybe cope) that he will be a part of the rumored DA range refresh in spring
This technically isn't rules as written but I've brought in a standard librarian to act as a leader for my Space Wolves Wolf Guard. Normally they could get a 4+ invuln by taking shields but the librarian instead gives that effect to everyone, freeing up loadouts to take more guns. All storm bolters gives the squad a better ranged output than basic terminators, only 1 less wound, and the same invuln, though they are less tough and have a worse save. As he's a leader that activates the Wolf Guards' ability which is a flat +1 to hit when being led by a character, which means his squad has a better damage output at range and melee than terminators when facing T4 units, for 35 less points
Don't forget that the wolf guard buff the librarian perfectly, too! He'll smite and shoot on 2+ and his force weapon will also hit on 2+. I've enjoyed the synergy they have a lot.
@@colinmcdonald5666that's rad. I thought the buffs they had only affected the guard ie the 'give a 4+ invuln to a unit being led' didn't affect the librarian, and it was the same for the +1 hit boost
@@greg_mca Ya it's a pretty important interaction; leaders gain the benefits of abilities that affect the entire unit they are attached to. Some examples:
-any leaders attached to thunderwolf cavalry also gain +1 damage on the charge
-any leaders attached to bloodclaws also gain +1S and +1A on the charge
It's fun looking for some small interactions like that!
Terminator librarian can combo well in Fire storm dettachment,
a unit of 10 terminators can have 2 Cyclone Missile launcher, that is 4 shots with Krak missiles, plus your keep the stormbolter
add a librarian with "forged in battle" enhancement and you can make one of your shots wheter a miss of a hit into a 6 for extra potential damage
deep striking close will also give you a increase in strenght
adding a librarian to a 10man squad of bloodclaws makes for one very durable midtable smash squad

I feel like he got sick of his robes and scrolls catching fire so just etched his favourites into his armour and put his book in a safe case.

I collect Space Marines for their look mostly. I don't mind what gets released overall.
I feel like you massively underrated mephiston frankly, IMO he's actually good alongside sternguard providing considerable melee defense to said unit - between him and a sergeant theres even enough melee threat to stop the usual melee bully units having their way with them.

Phobos is fun in a spectrus killteam for dw. Get 2 supressors, 2 eliminators (i use las fusil, 5 infiltrators and then 1 flex spot. 11man unit cant be shot outside 12, decent firebase. And depending on detatchments and enhancements can do gamey stuff like shoot and move. Or move 6in if you get too close. Kinda fun
285pts before enhancements. 210 for 10man spectrus.
It would be interesting if you did a tier list of every named SM character since there are so mang and 10th’s leader abilities

I managed the other day to Smite a Redemptor Dread with the Standard Librarian. Was pretty good tbh
Also with Njarl, you seem to have overlooked his improved smite. Focused witchfire is on 2D6 and is S7 with sustained hits 2!! I had Njarl dish out 12 damage in one attack last time I used him.
In the article about the old world game they revealed that the new turn system has the various magic spells being used across the various phases.
I feel this could have been implemented in 10th to keep the old psychic powers.
I hope they implement it in AoS next edition and it somehow ends up back into 40K next edition.
I agree that a psychic phase feels unnecessary. But removing the very idea of physic just feels like throwing out the baby with the bathwater.
@themilo1567 They haven't removed it they've just baked it into the psyker units, which I feel gives them a purpose of buffing a certain unit not have them scurrying in the back.

The Terminator Librarian with a Deathwatch Terminator Squad can give three assault cannons Sustained Hits 1. That's a huge boost to damage, an absolute lawn mower for horde armies.
Ezekiel has potential to go up to 4 library books. He has to get updated when we get the dark angels codex in spring. He can be great with bladeguard or heroes and if he could get a jump pack (he wont) but I'd be extremely happy. Hell, give him gravis armour and lead inceptors he can have a scrap while there shooting
Phobos librarian and Eliminators would be great tbh, as you could pick off enemy characters even if you had to move to get LOS, then you could pop back somewhere and be untargetable outside of 12" and also -1 to hit even in the open by a unit that then gets within 12" of you, without needing to be in cover.

Ok. People talk about the Lieutenant problem, but these Librarians are becoming a problem as well.
When Njal was originally introduced into 40k (back in the Rogue Trader days) he had a unique psychic power named Wind Blast (I believe), hence Njal's `Stormcaller' epithet. I wonder why they didn't give him a `smite' style psychic attack based on that, rather than a less flavour full lightning thing?
My loyalist marines are Templars. It would be heresy to have librarians. That’s why I got my new favorite army the Thousand Sons mid-9th and enjoyed them. Going to take my Templars out again now in the new edition soon though

I miss them too, and I dont understand why they did away with them. I loved pyromancy, and biomancy. They were loads of fun. I used to have a terminator librarian with a storm shield that i would put with a close combat squad of some description, and either hulk out on biomancy or use the fire nova spells before the charge. It was great at large blobs of multi units.
I don't know if you played in 5th Ed, but it was super different.
Tanks has armor facings, so the armor would usually be weak in the back.
AP worked different, so space Marines were super tanky and terminators were almost impossible to remove.
Flamers and blast weapons had templates, you hit whatever was under the template. More realistic, but space out your models and it would minimize casualties.
The game was more about the narrative than the competition, and it was great.
@@codyott1982i haven’t played since the end of 5th… termis were a lot weaker than you remember I think. 5+ inv and a 2+ save only goes so far (it only takes a single 1)Particularly with how much ap2 stuff there was. Getting FNP from whatever way you could get it was a savior. Mass attacks could swamp 2+ saves fairly easily compared to these multi wound versions now.
Looks like If I had came back just a year ago, I could still use my Scars, now I’ll have to start from scratch. I was looking forward to not hitting a pothole and loosing entire bike squads after failing difficult terrain tests when I enter and leave terrain. (I’m having some 3E flashbacks or something in here too).
@@cmSaS oh yeah 5th ed had a lot of jank. Like a tank getting immobalised on a curb. Or losing your HQ when he splatted down with a jump pack but failed the difficult terrain. And yeah losing a full squad of terms to massed lasguns was annoying too. That said, I did like the armour values and facings on vehicals, I just think they should have had wounds. That one lucky lascannon taking down a landraider in one shot on turn one was just demoralising, and why I didnt use vehicals much in 5th ed. Was more reliable to spam troops instead. But thats why i have a full companies worth of marines now lol

That 3+ invuln was crazy good. We had 2 shield types, combat (4+ invuln) and storm (3+).

I think Njal's biggest downside is he would really love to sit in with a unit of shooty terminators, but mostly they just fire off a ton of bolter shots and you need some way to buff those to make them worthwhile.
And while I'm being wistful he's famous in lore for blasting a bloodthirster psychically so a bigger psychic attack would be fun too lol.
Just saying they should just go full 30k with leaders being able to join any squad, would fix a lot of weird limitations
That was how it was in 7th and before, and in 8th and 9th was effectively how it was handled (not officially part of the squad but all buffs were auras to locally targeted). However, they decided going into 10th that it was too hard to balance out all the possible interactions where certain buffs might be fine and flavorful in general but too strong combined with certain units, so they decided to instead limit what units get access to which buffs.
Kind of frustrating overall though, and probably could have just limited/toned down the buffs themselves rather than try to limit what goes into each squad (and even in the process they have weird things - like the Lieutenant in 8th/9th was good for pretty much any squad with RR1's to wound, but now with "Lethal Hits" why would you even waste the ink giving them Infernus Squads as a bodyguard choice?).
We can already see the cracks in updating factions and dealing with new units/leaders and what bodyguards for what, and it is going to compound with each new release.
As a grey knights player a librarian dreadnought would be really nice
The biggest problem with Njall is that he's also competing against a unique option for space wolves to take an equivalent to a Termy Lieutenant, a very tempting offer for unique combos.
Auspex, could you do a video of fielding n Imperial Knight into a Space marines army/ Chaos Knights into a Chaos Space Marines detachement? i would like to know if such combos are possibly using Crusaders and Desecators in.
Librarian on bike with a bike squad using two plasma guns is really fun
Regular librarians are underrated in Infernus squads - they actually do want to be more tanky and there's no competition with the Lt (since lethal hits are useless) and much more valuable than Chalpains and Apothecaries.
I wish we could get librarian dreadnoughts for other chapters. I don't want to have to play blood angels just to put one of my brain-toasters in a walky box.

I'm torn on what to do with my termie librarian. I play dark angels and thousand sons. So on one hand, I could have a deathwing terminator librarian, and on the other I could make a sweet Ignis conversion with the runes on the terminator armor.
Ezekiel was one of the best models you could take for DA in 9th. He was pretty much auto include if you ever wanted to take a big brick of Termies.
It's so sad to see him fall so low. Here's hoping he gets better with the DA codex.

Noob question, are there limitations on how many named characters & number of librarians you can take in an army?
Would the 10th Ed core rulebook answer this? Thanks.
The are points, up to three of any single non-battleline data sheet, only one of each named (epic hero) character, and you have to pick one chapter keyword when selecting named characters.
So there’s nothing stopping you from running all of the Ultramarines characters at the same time. There’s actually a 2k list that’s only captain models.
It's so dumb the way that a Librarian changes his powers depending on which armour he wears. Just give a list of powers and let Psykers choose which one they want...
It's more a balancing issue as giving the termie libby a 4++ would be kinda redundant. I mean in the future they might have data sheets for different librarians with a different buff for the squad they join or maybe psychic melee attacks as well.

You have no idea what you’re talking about when it comes to Mephiston. Otherwise, nice breakdown. Mephiston is a “Boss” character on the TT. Pair him with shooty BA (Sternguard) and it’s a crazy unit. I used him and took down two knights with just Assault Int. Put him with Stern, with his Psychic attack and they will mulch infantry’s (Stern get to shoot again if they kill a unit).
Sternguard lost that ability with codex release, they instead get +1 to hit on oath target

My librarian dread has dropped some warheads a couple times with a 6 for that blood lance. Shame they make mephiston, strongest imperium psyker, consistently a wet noodle in game.
I started colecting Blood Ravens in 9E and my plan was to do Lobrarian heavy army. So now I have 2 primaris librarians, 1 terminator librarian and 1 "gifted" librarian dreandaught. But now in the 10E have no idea how utilze them... any ideas?
( I am not trying anything serious, it's just meme army of Blood Ravens vs my cousins Trazyns Necrons...)
No way is mephiston 1 1/2 stars. Him with 10 assault intercessors flung across the board by the libby dread is a nightmare for opponents.
They feel so bad and boring, even ehen I forgot about them 90% of the time but still 9th was and still is the better edition, when you remove ignore invul rules and wounding Limits via House rules it is the way better edition
