So true, after watching some of Eleanor's videos and always just listening about those parents that just didn't do anything or didnt think of certain situation anything... Breck's mom did everything she could. Absolutelly heartbreaking that police ignored an ADULT woman's concerns after giving them such a good reasons to AT LEAST type his name into the system...unbelivable. I wonder what those police officers thought after learning what happened to this boy. We can at least hope they have learned from this as well and will never ignore another calls like this.

No she didn't. If she tried her best she would have taken Brecks technology away the moment he started to change his personality. So all in all it's not her fault but she is partly to blame as well as the police and Breck.

Jessica Madison his mum actually took his tech away from him that’s why the murderer sent him a phone in those post. It’s not easy to remove equipment, kids have internet access at school and can use their friends stuff it’s not simple.

@Chocolate Stars not every older person is a bad influence so why punish someone for making an older friend? If they show that they are a bad influence on the kid then yeah take away whatever contact they have from that person. But in the eyes of many she did what she could. Don’t victim blame a mother who lost her son.

    • @kimithy
      @kimithy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@Chocolate Stars i agree. and im sure she beats herself up about it too. i think what she is doing now, going around and telling others about the dangers, is great. so others wont wait so long to take action. and informing the children themselves of what to look out for.

@Chocolate Stars Barely even a family friend... If it's not family there is no reason an adult should be integrating themselves into kids playing as a group, period.

I wonder if she had been sharing her feelings about this with his dad? If he knew that his son was being groomed by an adult & still was so lax about where he was really going & what he was doing.

I think that probably one of the sadder aspects of this case is his parents moved to the UK because they thought it was safer than America. They so genuinely wanted to protect their children and they were still affected by violence.
Edit: Guys, I wasn't saying the UK was "so much safer" I was saying that the parents were under the impression that it was safer because, living in the US you don't hear about gun crime (or really any kind of assault related crime) in the UK so it appears to be safer. Obviously violence is prevalent the world over but these people were just genuinely optimistic.

The father said he “sent Breck off to his death”, which is absolutely heartbreaking. The parents hold no blame whatsoever, but I think there will always be guilt even if it’s completely unwarranted.

Kids are kids and their brains aren't fully developed (if I remember correctly it's not until their 20's) so their knowledge of stuff like that is at best minimal and they take many things as truths and cases like this are tragic on the behalf of the family, horrendous by the culprit, and frustration by the lack of police support. It fucking sucks, but on the lighter side it hopefully puts in motion and educates ways to further prevent this stuff from happening as often.

I wish she had shut down his gaming account in the first place when she saw he was talking to this stranger. I understand why she wouldn’t of course, it would seem like a harsh punishment. But a kid spending 5+ hours gaming every day- especially when they’re barely ever seeing anyone in person- definitely shouldn’t be considered normal and should be a red flag as there is no way for a child to develop properly and learn to trust their gut instinct if almost all of their interactions are online. This case should serve as a warning to parents of how dangerous it can be for a child to become consumed by online life.

Mark O lewis daynes is the only one really to blame. however, it is very disappointing that the police could’ve simply searched his name & most likely, none of this would’ve happened. you have no idea how extensive the lies he made breck tell his father were. personally, when i was 14, if i asked my patents to stay over somewhere & told them who & where, they would never question it because they trust me & they were right in those situations as obviously i’m fine now. so that was probably what happened with his father & clearly, breck was usually very well behaved & trustworthy so they had no reason to no believe him, especially as they thought he hadn’t been talking to lewis for ages. don’t blame the father, that’s a singular person who probably regrets his seemingly innocent actions so much whereas the police are an entity, some of which who need to learn to do their jobs better. if the mum was concerned enough to call the police about the situation, they could’ve simply searched his name & that would mean the situation with the father most likely never would’ve occurred.

I can’t explain enough how thankful I am for this video. Had I not watched this, my 9 year old brother would’ve gone the same was a Breck. My brother, (for privacy reasons I’m going to change his name) let’s call him Isaac, was chatting with a 18 year old man named (again, changing names) Charlie. He has been grooming my little brother for 8 MONTHS. Eleanor Neale, you have saved a life. Eleanor Neale, you have saved my brother’s life! I am so thankful. I love you so much. My dedication to you will be endless. I love you so much! I wish nothing but the very best for you. Lots and LOTS of love, ace
edit: thank you for all the support! he is now 11 and much safer online

As a big brother, I can say that internet grooming doesn't apply to just boys. I have a little sister, and there are more and more girls playing games online in each generation. I'm very protective of my sister, as my parents were with me. If Breck were still around, he would be just a year older than me. And Lewis Danes looks like a freaking child! I thought I had baby face, but at least I look within five years of my actual age! Danes (at age 18) looks like he's an eight year old with acne! He did himself in, sending himself to prison by committing such a despicable and heinous crime.

That Man In the Yellow Shirt 2000 fuck they go for girls more. We are more vularable because most teen girls(not all) have horrible self essteem. With me, I was 14 to16 on and off and had a horrible self image. But you have these older men wanting you and tellin you your pretty and wanted you dont even have to be attracted to these people just the fact that someone is giving attintion made the difference. You hear it with girls they usually have low self essteem and with boys thinking they are boys and arent going to be groomed.

He went to my primary and secondary school and was such a well rounded person. I didn’t know him very well because I was in the year above but he was always smiling, surrounded by friends, liked by teachers and just seemed a nice person. I was at a party when someone told me he’d been murdered and everyone was shocked and in silence. His form room was next to mine and I’d see him almost everyday and it became very noticeable that he wasn’t there anymore. Our school did an assembly the week before he died on meeting people over the internet but apparently he didn’t think he was in the same situation. Such a shame and a lovely family are now missing their dear son. I can’t even imagine their pain but I hope they are able to carry on and let Breck live through them. Rest in peace Breck 🤍

I'm going to share a story from my own experience with grooming and poor police work:
I was 18 at the time and had a friend that was 15 - I talked to her parents and introduced myself, they were fine with the friendship! (We met at a comic con, people familiar with those events will know that it is hard to tell people's ages and its kinda awkward to ask straight up, we both thought we were the same age. Anyway I'm going off topic, I just wanted everyone to know I'm not a weirdo haha)
After a few months she confided in me that she thought she was being groomed online, and sent me screenshots of conversations she had had with the person. Some of the comments were wildly inappropriate and he kept pushing her to send photos and meet up. And she had told him where she lived, because she was naive and didn't realise the danger.I advised her to block him and contact the police, because obviously him knowing where she lived was dangerous, but she didn't feel comfortable so asked if I would do it on her behalf. So I said i would have the initial conversation, but that there was only so much I could do and that they would want to speak to her as I was an adult and not the victim.
Anyways, I called and told them the whole story and offered to email screenshots of these conversations. However, all they were interested in was me. They kept ignoring what I was saying and focusing on our ages, asking 'how do you know your friend?' 'How old did you say you both were again?' 'What's your full name?' 'Do you talk often?' 'Do you meet up with her or are your conversations purely online?' amongst other things. I understand that they wanted to verify my own identity and the nature of the adult/minor friendship, but it was INTENSE.
I understand that it isn't a usual thing for a 15 year old and an 18 year old to be friends, but I was upset that they wouldn't listen to me. They were treating me like I was grooming my friend. (Were still friends btw, she's now 18 and I'm 21).
Eventually, literal MONTHS later I found out this guy was on trial for rape of another young girl because it was on the local news. I can't help but think that if the police had taken my report seriously rather than questioning me like I was in the wrong, that girl wouldn't have had to go through that 🥺 Absolutely awful police work, I gave them the full name of the guy and they didn't so much as check it! I don't know if he had prior convictions but really? It's awful.

Wow, that's... pretty fkn bad on the part of law enforcement. I've had many older friends w/years between us in highschool even, so it's not that unusual. I get having to verify identity and all of that, but the more important thing was that you were calling on behalf of the victim, as a friend - you weren't calling as a perpetrator. I do commend you for calling though!! Most people wouldn't do that :) I hope you and your friend are doing alright

The fact that they didn't even look into the information you were offering is just terrible.
I had a friend from my old military school who turned 18 in his senior year just a month before graduation (I was 14 at the time) and he was like an awesome big brother to me. I was harassed by a boy in my science class and when I reported this other boy the staff instantly looked at my friend and thought I was trying to cover up for him.
It's understandable why people would look at the older person in the situation because of cases that have happened in the past, but it seems like people just get tunnel vision on one suspect, even when there is evidence of another person causing an issue.
I hope your friend is okay, and I really hope that man is put behind bars and never let out.

Pedophiles are getting more clever with grooming children and it's sick. Unfortunately kids around the ages of 11-15 are at the age that they want to be independent and they want to think they know everything so when you tell them they're being groomed, they get mad and say "no I'm not I know what I'm doing!!" And it's really unfortunate because the hardest victims to save are the ones that don't want to be. It's just so heartbreaking. I know this isn't relevant to this case exactly but recently internet pedophiles have been targeting young and lonely LGBT kids and they've been trying to tell them that they're the same by claiming that pedophile is an oppressed sexuality. And these kids just don't know any better.
I'm so infuriated with the police department. Some 9 to 5 beat cop receptionist couldn't take the four goddamn seconds to type in the name in the database and a promising young boy is dead now because of it. I really hope whoever took that call and ignored it knows. I hope they know. I hope they know that this man was in the system and that they could have stopped this and I hope it eats at them. He was only a child that wanted to make friends. All I can hope is that he didn't suffer. I just hope that if he was assaulted by this demon of a man that it was after his death so he wouldn't have to suffer through an attack like that. May this sweet child Rest In Peace knowing his killer is behind bars.

An older man was talking to me online, telling me he loved me and wanted to be with me. One day he told me his dad died and wanted me at the funeral. Went as far to say that he bought me a plane ticket and would meet me at the airport when I landed. I told my mum that I was staying at a friend's house, but she didn't believe me. I'm glad you finally let your mum in and listened to her ❤️ someone tried to groom me when I first came out as gay, someone on facebook. It didn't take me a long time to realise that this wasnt the person they were saying they were, or atleast that their intentions weren't so innocent. I remember after a few weeks of talking and getting to know eachother, the person started asking me to join them on a road trip to a part of the UK, that I should give them my address and they'd come and get me. I thought it was a bit weird at first, but only realised it was more sinister than weird when they said "don't tell your mum or sister you're coming though". I politely turned him down and over a few weeks slowly distanced myself until eventually blocking him. It is horrible to think back on it but I'm so glad I knew the warning signs.

Poor Breck, rest in peace. This story made me realize that I have been groomed as a kid. I don't remember how old I was but I must have been 13 or less. I met this "boy" online , I don't remember a lot but "we" agreed to meet. So I took a bus, and went to meet him (I am from a small village so I travelled to a city where we were supposed to meet at a bus station). This was before cell phone era, so he just told me what he would be wearing and the place where he would be. So I got off the bus, and went to the spot we were supposed to meet. I remember seeing him from afar and I got the feeling that something was off (he also looked older that he was supposed to be - definitely not my age). So I turned around and went back home without ever approaching him. I always felt guilty that I stood up this poor "boy", but literally after I finished watching this video.. and after 22 years after this "almost" meeting, it clicked. Now I believe that I made a really smart decision not go to that man. I just feel a bit stupid that I agreed to a meeting in first place. But I mean, 22-23 years ago.. the internet was starting, I had no idea what could happen.

I actually met somebody online who sounds like Lewis, but they didn't hide their true colours enough so I was able to escape them pretty quickly. I'm nervous to post this because I don't want to be accused of lying or attention seeking, and I don't want him to find me. It's *nowhere near as serious* as the Breck Bednar case, but he was very controlling and manipulative towards me, going as far as to manipulate me into giving him a location near my house and pushing me into a suggestive conversation. I stopped talking to him after about 5 days because I had a very bad feeling about this person. I found out more about him - he was violent and had been in trouble with the police more than once, according to him - but perhaps the scariest thing about this situation is I found out the location he told me he lived in was less than 3 hours away from me. And when I was talking to him, I was camping less than 20 minutes away.
Anyone who is under 14 and says "Oh yeah, I'd totally see through the lies of someone like this!" has no idea what they're talking about.

BlueIsKewl I agree. Kids like to say that they would be able to tell, but the truth is that they wouldn't. It's easy to not be in the situation and say "Oh that would never happen to me!", but at 14 you're a little kid and it doesn't matter how smart you are, if someone who is an adult is grooming you, you won't be able to tell.

    • @riri-jk2vw
      @riri-jk2vw 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

d c yes they might be able to because I don’t think many would be friends with an adult and most of brecks friends in this case did actually notice and worried about him and this stranger. Lots of teenagers would think it was suspicious a stranger messaging them, obviously this is over online gaming but I don’t think many would meet up or miss all those red flags. Most of my friends and myself would because strangers have messaged us before and we didn’t pursue with them..

      1. Yes, everyone knows you shouldn't. But people do it anyway because we're all idiots.
      2. Imagine that your best friend that you had known for years (in real life) invited you to their house for the first time, then turns out to be a bad person. It's similar in a way if you've known and voice/video called with somebody online for years and developed a close relationship with them, because you would trust them completely and wouldn't question travelling to meet them; you would probably be excited to meet them for real. Just because you *know* you shouldn't do something doesn't mean you wouldn't trust someone enough to meet them, especially someone our age, and saying you wouldn't just because you were told not to by a teacher or something is frankly insensitive. :/

This case hit me so freaking hard in the feels. It just hit home. When I was 17, my brother was 11 or 12. We played that old game Disney’s Toontown Online (do you guys remember that?! Throwback!) Anyway one day we joined a group of other people who very often went out and did task together, made funny music videos for TH-cam, and just explored in the game. They called themselves The Leaves and everyone had nature based names, cute right? Well we had actually joined them because an online friend of ours, a girl my age, that we had met on a Minecraft server was like “it’s kind of fun and they’re all super nice” so we tagged along. Everyone had a green character, either a cat or dog, and it was just cool to have people to actually play the game with. None of us ever talked outside of the game, no Skype, no discord, no Facebook, just the game. One day we met the “leader” of the group. He called himself Tree (we never told each other our real names, why would we?) well he said he was 19 years old, not weird, a lot of teenagers played the game, even grown adults, it was fun and nostalgic and super stress relieving. He was nice, and always told the younger kids in the group to be polite as he didn’t want other players associating the group with online bullies. He seemed nice, though I only personally spoke to him a few times. As time went on he started sharing personal news just stuff like his family moving into a bigger house and he wouldn’t have WiFi to play the game for a few days, or that school had gotten busy. He later told everyone he was in Law School. I was like....Um okay.....I doubt it. Maybe he means he’s studying law and prepping for law school, whatever. Then he dropped a bomb. “My family is rich, we live in a big mansion. I’m dropping out of law school to start my own company” The kids, including my brother thought he was so cool. But me and Petal (our Minecraft friend who asked us to join this group with her) didn’t believe it. We called him out on it when we were the only 3 online. He got mad and defended himself. We still didn’t believe him. More lies followed like, his company had just hired a few employees and a game was being developed. He has just bought a corvette, he was moving out of his parents house into his own mansion, blah blah blah. Petal and I kept calling him out on it, telling these kids not to believe him because he was most likely lying. They got mad at us and told Tree who kicked us out! My brother would say things like “he doesn’t want you around, he hates you, why would he lie?, mind your own business. Later on I created a fake account and asked to join them, only petal knew, as she did the same. We were worried this guy was an online predator, in fact we knew he was. They didn’t suspect a thing and let us in. We acted as if we believed Tree and just played along. Soon enough Tree just disappeared for about 2 months. The group continued as usual, basically forgetting about Tree and invited Petal and I back because we were the oldest now and they wanted a moderator. Cool, all was normal. 8 months passed and Tree just showed up again. He told everyone his game had launched and that’s why he was gone so long, but this time nobody believed him. They asked where to buy the game, he gave a link to one person in the group, Petal. What she saw was scary as f*ck. She was so scared she wouldn’t even tell me what it was, she just said, I know him irl, he’s 19 but he’s not who he says he is and I’m gonna go call the cops. I freaked out because my brother had befriended this fool! They were close! I never told our parents, I wanted to handle it on my own. The next day Petal told everyone that he was no good. He was a predator. Turns out, he was gone so long as he had been caught with a minor, a minor! He had been in jail, mom bailed him out. She later told me that he had sent her the link to his secondary FB account with inappropriate pics of him with young girls and boys. The other kids got so scared. My brother apologized to me and the kid was soon kicked off the game. Be careful online guys. You never know who’s out there. My brother now only games with his real life friends. Petal stopped online gaming a year later when she started college. I don’t online game often, only with my brother and friends. Not sure what happened to Tree but I hope he never hurt anyone and is rotting in Prison or Hell. Even now, as a 28 year old woman, I am so careful online. You should too.

While i was growing, my mom never allowed me to visit friend's houses that she didn't know personally and never let me go out with them without talking to their parents first. At the time i thought she was just being dramatic, but now that i'm 19, i understand why she did it.
