I just bought four yesterday. Never heard of "Prarie Bluebell" before. Three light to black grey, one looks just like an Americana. Brown yellow black, eyeliner, ear tufts. Two weeks later: totally different conformation, leg color, tail/rumpless, comb/no comb. The "prairie bluebells" now look like a barnyard mix. Tractor Supply. What is up? THAT is a silver laced Wyandotte; for sure. I get the feeling we've been duped. Who came up with this "breed?"
Good selection of chickens. Mary Carl from Cog Hill Farm corrected a store employee about incorrect names of the birds. Birds are her passion so she is more knowledgeable about them than others although she is a young.
From my personal experience the ppl at these farm stores dgaf and don't even want to be doing it in the first place so they just throw whatever wherever. I got some chicks this year (supposed to be bluebells) they rang em up as ISA Reds so I guess we'll see lol.
I enjoyed seeing your variety of chickens. The mixes are always a fun little treat to see what they'll look like. I've noticed that with TSC that the chicks are placed in bin and usually either not labeled or labeled incorrectly by staff who don't know any better. Just this weekend I picked up some Silkies and the woman getting them out insisted they were bantams, but not Silkies. She was going by the label, not knowing any difference. Another employee, clearly a supervisor, knew that a Silkie is a type of bantam. That was the perfect example of why sometimes we don't get the chickens we expect. My first batch of birds should have had 3 polish hens and I ended up with a Houdan rooster. He's a mean little booger named Rudy because he's so rude. I just do more research on the breeds before I make any decisions on a purchase. That seems to help.
Yes I agree. I actually did look up the chicks when purchased and they looked right until they were several months old. But I agree we have to do our own research
Prairie Bluebell Eggers are a hybird. A very new hybrid. Because of this they still lack consistency in their genetics. As the breed gets older, and if the breeders are selective of which traits they desire and breed those traits, they will eventually develop consistency in their appearance. Nice flock of happy chickens. I have an older hen that lays small eggs about the size of your small ones.

Teresa you may try asking Rule King what breader they get their chicks from. Maybe from there you can figure out what kind they are.

I don't get chicks from TSC anymore because of that reason and I'd lose half or more in the first two weeks.
