- Half of the world's cork wine stoppers come from Portugal's cork oak trees. These trees are so important to the country's ecosystem and economy, they're protected under Portuguese law. We went inside the forests of Alentejo to see how the cork bark is carefully harvested every nine years so it doesn't hurt the trees. This footage was filmed in 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

After 30 years, the cork trees I planted at my home from acorns finally gave me little acorns of their own.
I never thought I would get to see it, that I'd be gone before it did. If I plant these, then I probably won't get to see the grand kids!
Brought a tear to my eye though, my babies are all grown up now...
There is saying in montado (the name of a sobreiro forest) in the lines of:
" You sow the Acorn, you son sharps the axes, and you grandson will collect cork".

I went on a guided tour of the Portuguese countryside in early 2020 and the guide gave a one hour talk on the cork oak trees, its uses and how proud the country is of the industry.
Damn that must have been boring af. Our guide only talked about it for like 10 mins

Can tell you, that is true. The cork at the factory they show in the video are separated by quality. The less holes it has(more dense) the more expensive it gets

It's crazy there's this one plant that's perfect for this one purpose.
Rubber comes from trees too and if there's ever a blight for those trees it would crash the global economy because rubber is so important to us, for example tires. Without rubber, cars, trucks, and planes would be useless until we find a suitable alternative. Synthetic rubber can't currently sustain the heat tires can get to.

I’m a musical instrument repair technician, and we frequently have to use cork for things like woodwind keys, saxophone necks, and “spit valves” on brass instruments.

I legit though corks were completely fabricated and manufactured. Knowing they aren't is really interesting.
I had known they were wood, but as a kid I thought they were the actual wood of the tree and not the bark, guess there are many small things to learn out there!

There are synthetic imitations too, real cork is used for traditional wines, cheap industrial wines bottle usualy have plastic imitations.

Cork scraps can also be mixed with a silicon and formed into material for making water proof boots, wallets, flooring, etc. It's really neat.

Title: How Cork trees exfoliate, and why that's a good thing.
Curious and beautiful facts about this industry and these trees (Quercus Sauber):
- The trees that are peeled for cork, actualy tend to live much longer and stronger than the non-peeled ones. This is because removing the old dead bark every 9 years helps the tree to regenerate a better and stronger bark, therefore keeping the tree more healthy. Its a simbiose industry.
- The first cork peeling of a tree is only made after the first 15 years of its life. Then, its repeated every 9 years.
- Quality of cork bark improves with age (number of peelings in life). Basically, the older the tree, the better quality of the cork. This also shows how this industry helps the tree being more healthy.
- In Portugal, these trees are called Sobreiro. Its the National tree by definition. They are protected by law and chopping down one of these trees can get you in real trouble.

also we can reuse it like what i saw the other day that they use corks for the seats of their barstools, no leather or foam needed.
You can also do some research and check if your city has specialized facilities to recycle/re-use wine corkscrew! They are not recyclable in traditional recycling facilities and if you put them in the trash after one use..well, it's not very sustainable.

These farms & the cork factories are a MUST SEE when anyone visits portugal!!!
Good to see the old traditional ways are being maintained in not just the local level but national level... Portugal is an excellent example of protecting natural resources but income generating renewable resources!
The natural way the bark is carefully removed and handled, the care for the trees themselves made me so happy.

Except cork is actually worth something. Raw wool is worthless. In my region it doesn't even pay for the gas it takes to take a load of wool to the buyer. So I raise hair sheep.

@@Sk1tz092 I sell cuts of lamb and mutton, and sell breeding quality animals to other farmers. I recently mailed my first batch of sheep skins to a tannery. When my flock sheds it falls on the pasture and only the birds make use of it for nests.

If you enjoy fishing, store your hooks in old wine corks. The corks will keep you from being hurt by the hooks and they also float in case your tackle box falls in the water.
I've got a neighbor who makes homemade wine, and I've always been curious about the corks in the bottles, cool to see that they don't have to kill the tree to harvest the bark and they can just rotate around fields every so often to get more, more methods of farming like this need to be experimented with to save nature while also cultivating it and making use of what it can provide without killing it

Hey. Most trees die from it. Regular Beech trees can die from a thin cut all the way around the trunk. Cork is just different

The elementary school I attended had a cork oak tree. As far as I know, it was never harvested. We always loved that tree, and thought it was special.

Read that some farmers we're switching to plastic cork stoppers which was a problem for cork tree farmers. Cork trees do not catch fire as fast & are beneficial to delay forest fires from spreading...they are biodegradable thus environmentally-friendly....good to know they're still being made.

We stayed at a monastery in Portugal when I was a kid, I remember the trees out back were so weird compared to anything I had seen back in the states.

A stuck cork in my whiskey bottle led me here, and I'm glad it did. Harvesting cork is actually pretty cool, and I had no idea where it came from.

When I was little (note: I live in Portugal) our class went to one of these cork "farms" (there was a part that had a very loud noise for my 9yr old ears) and everyone in my class got a cork square as a souvenir (I probably lost it somewhere ;( )
