  • @calholli
    @calholli 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    When you run 2 strokes slow, the oil builds up in the bottom of the case, which will cause it to smoke a lot and will actually foul the plugs.. When you high rev a 2 stroke, it will suck all that excess oil out of the bottom and blow it out the exhaust and then it burns much cleaner. Ideally you don't want it to smoke at all, So if you are riding it on slow trails and it starts smoking a lot, you should high rev it a few times and blow out that extra oil. This thing NOT smoking after you guys were high reving it on the road is comletely normal and is exactly what you want... which will prolong plug life. It seems to be running pretty good. ITs a little boggy on the bottom end, could maybe use a little jet work-- but who cares, its great fun...... again, ideally when it smokes on start up and slow riding, thats good --- its getting plenty of oil...... but again, you want to high rev and blow all that out and at highre speeds it should be running clean, no smoke. Nice find. ANother great find in this range is a Yamaha Blaster (quad).. they are everywhere and the engine looks almost exaclty the same.

    • @kshepthedrummer
      @kshepthedrummer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for this. I have a little yamaha rt100 that I'll ride around every once in a while. Last time I tried to start it, it wouldn't start (normally it starts first kick,) the spark plug was covered in oil. When I cleaned it and got it running, it sprayed a ton of oil out the exhaust and even after a minute or 2, it was still covering my hand in oil if I revved it with my hand behind it. I took it for a ride and it cleared up.
      This seems like a reasonable explanation for all that lol.

    • @calholli
      @calholli 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kshepthedrummer Yeah, if it runs that way a little too often, you should probably mix in a little less oil. I know that on my buddies Yamaha Tri-z 250's, it called for him to mix the oil 20 to 1. But I always mixed my oil at 32 to 1 and never had any issues. And I know a few guys that swear by 50 to 1. and I've had chainsaws and a boat engine that called for 50 to 1. So there is a little wiggle room on the oil to fuel ratio, especially depending on your riding style. Another thing that I found interesting is: If you add too much oil to the fuel, it will actually cause your 'AIR TO FUEL" mixture to run LEAN-- which is a little counter intuitive. But the more oil you add to your mix, then the LESS FUEL is getting in, and this will cause your engine to run extra hot and burn up pistons. Of coarse, you can re-jet your carbs to account for this. But in general, if you have a bike that keeps burning up pistons, you can drop your oil to fuel mixture (by adding less oil) and it will make it run more Rich, which will cause it to run cooler. If you've ever used a torch, just think of what happens when you squeeze that oxygen trigger. It makes the flame burn much hotter and cut through steal easily. The same thing is happening in the combustion chamber when you run an engine too lean, and it will literally torch a whole through your piston. So again, especially if you are smoking at lot, mix in less oil (within reason) and use a good oil. I've had great results with this. It will tend to burn cleaner, plugs last longer, it runs cooler and pistons last longer....... but otherwise, when it smokes, just make sure to blipp the throttle wide open a few times and blow that stuff out.. Or just jump on it an run a couple full speed sprints and let it blow all that stuff out of there. I first learned this because I was going through plugs like crazy and I wanted to figure out why-- and after hours of reading forums for days and days... I stumbled onto enough discoveries to come to this conclusion. I love 2 strokes, nothing quite has the same switch flipping punch as feeling it come into the powerband, short of running a turbo. lol... And that's another thing, the reason it has an "expansion chamber" on the exhaust is because as the piston is coming up and compressing the air/fuel it will acutally push a lot of that mixture right out the exhaust port, but when it fires it sends a shockwave pulse of pressure down the exhaust pipe, and that expansion chamber will echo and ripple that pulse back toward the cylinder and it will push all that air/fuel mixture back into the cylinder just before the exhaust port closes. So it has a "turbo" effect, but that echo, pulse can only move at a certain speed.. So that means it will only give you that extra power at certain RPM's-- and that's why its called a "power band"-- because the peak power only happens during a certain "band' of RPM"s... like say 5k to 9k rpm's... otherwise the engine will run with a lot less power without it... SO that's why 2 strokes feel kinda weak at first and then it all the sudden KICKS IN. ANd depending on the length and size of your expansion chamber section of the exhaust, you can actually change WHEN that power band kicks in... That's why it is important to know what type of exhaust is on your bike--- Because there are fatter pipes that will be much better for trails and give you a lot of low end torque, but will be less power at wide open throttle..... Or you could get a racing pipe, which will typically be a lot skinnier and it will cause your bike to be very weak from idle up to 3/4 thorttle, but then it will have a lot of power with it running wide open... Which is only really good for drag racing, and hard to ride on trails with that set up.... because it will be pretty boggy in the slow trails, until you give it full throttle and then its too much power and tries to run you up the side of a tree.. lol......... There is a lot of math that goes into tuning your exhaust just right where you want it--- just know that not all exhausts are equal on a 2 stroke engine--- and its actually one of the most important parts of a modern 2 stroke engine making power.

    I had a fixer-upper 175 in the 80s. Between the rearward engine and rake, steering was not nearly as easy as the Honda 185s or 200s. If you didn't move your body around a lot it had awful understeer, basically all the bad things that were the death knell for 3 wheelers turned up to 11. It was also a bit of a wheelie monster, if hard to balance. 4 strokes ate it alive on hills but it was quick enough on flatter ground. FYI, it responds well to freeing up the exhaust. I was flying down the road in 4th gear when the exhaust came off the head and it surprised the hell out of me by suddenly becoming REALLY loud and pulling massive wheelie at 25 mph or whatever I was doing at the time. Fun times.
    For all the pain I had fixing it and trying to remember to fill the 2 stroke oil reservoir, it was still a lot of fun. Even if the Honda guys gave me crap all the time. Definitely taught me to fix my own crap. Those start every time, always run perfect without so much of as a hiccup Hondas taught my friends nothing!

    If you two-three are going to be working on more old Japanese bikes, you might want to buy a set of JIS screwdrivers. The Japanese bikes do not have Phillip's head screws. They appear to be, but are different. The JIS screwdrivers are much less likely to strip out the heads. I had worked on these bikes for several years before hearing about them and they make a world of difference. They can be found online.
