    Completely agree with your points. I watched both the sub and the dub and the sub is much better (guess it adds to the Japanese culture thing going on) but these characters felt empty and the story was all over the place. There are also moments where it felt like something of consequence is about to happen (like the tidal waves when the plane crashed) but then nothing happens? Idk the pacing was weird. Shame too cause I wanted to like this series but it was missing focus and substance. Premise was cool though

      Oh hey didn’t expect to see you here Saberspark. Big fan of your videos. I’d also be interested if you did a review on this. Couldn’t agree more, so many characters die like the dad and then they just move on. Like the daughter is crying and the mum says to toughen up and keep going? Then the younger brother just isn’t affected at all.

    This anime has a kind of way with death, it has characters die in strange and unexpected ways. This gives a sense that the deaths are random similar to real life, and while the idea they will move quickly off people’s death. This is shown by the way of having them need to move on to survive. Also the deaths can be really funny like with the kid who learnt how to speak, and then dies from a rock. Like this show could be an adult swim dark humor show.

      I'm assuming it wasn't intentional but a lot of the deaths don't feel all that... important? Take Nanami who just drops dead from poison gas and that's it. Cool, but within 30 seconds the characters just start having a normal conversation as if they've completely forgotten that a girl's corpse and poison gas are 10 feet away from them. Like???

    the one thing that annoyed me was Ayumu got a pretty deep cut on her leg in like the 1st episode and for some reason it never bothers her and she never gets it checked out even though they cut back to her leg several times and its visibly getting worse. but she doesnt limp or look like its causing her pain, even if she was faking it when they get to the cult they have a functioning hospital area that she volunteers in too and she NEVER gets it checked out there! she has a perfect opportunity to get her leg checked out and fixed and she doesnt take it and they were there for several days! her leg isnt a problem until of course the very end when it gets infected and she's passing out from it and of course her leg needs to be amputated. it never had to happen and all I can think is "yeah of course it got infected you fucking idiot! you should have gotten some antibiotics when you had the chance!"

    • @zorthar6178
      @zorthar6178 4 ปีที่แล้ว +89

      I think she just didn’t want to bother people with a « small cut » even though its not. She’s trying to a nice and strong (mentally) girl like her mother so she tries to ignore the pain. But I agree on the fact that she starts showing pain like 2 weeks after the actual cut (but maybe is it because the infection made the pain worse?)

    • @DatVo-tl2dw
      @DatVo-tl2dw 4 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      I mean when they were at the Utopia, They were only there for a couple days (i think) and she was still in shock from ALOT of other things, I’m sure she had a lot of other things on her mind. Plus shock and adrenaline can almost numb a person for several days to make them feel fine

    • @pupville1055
      @pupville1055 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      +rogue1ful - Right? Throughout the story, the second I saw she had a cut on her leg I thought "Oh, this will be a continuous problem". I assumed this was a 'hardcore survival' story and infection would set in, but it only *did* that at the end. Which, fine, but very rarely do we ever actually see her suffering any problems in mobility. There's only a few scenes where she seems to be in pain but then literally walks it off. And no characters ever comment on the fact that she has a very visible open wound on her leg. It feels so cheap and only serves to be a problem for when its convenient for the plot.

    • @r.v.b.4153
      @r.v.b.4153 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      It also kinda reminds me of the scene the truck driver throws out the bottle and they suddenly focus on the pieces of glass, making you think they were going to mean something to the plot. They do or focus on something and it subsequently doesn't reappear at any moment throughout the series.

    The rap was one of my favourite scenes! It showed the internal struggle the characters had between loving Japan, thinking it's problematic, and realizing that even though it does have problems it is home and has beauty too, which I really believe was the main message of the plot, other than of course, accepting that even though modernization and change happens, Japan's spirit and culture cannot be broken.

    The first episodes pulled me in, with death and destruction everywhere, but then the dad gets killed and I’m like, “oh..... he’s dead...... don’t know how to feel about this”
    Then other characters start dropping off and I’m like okay show, just kill off every good character thats FINE.
    I will say the mothers death did get me, but the other deaths were a little bit out of place in my opinion. I mean dad blows up, best friend succumbs to poison gas, gramps gets crushed to death, mom drowns, second best friends drowns as well. They just feel a little bit forced to me.

      The girl getting poisoned didn't bother me. It just seemed natural that something like that could happen, especially after several severe earthquakes. The Dad's death though was completely his fault. They don't put up warning signs without reason most of the time. Hell even if it wasn't a "minefield" he could've poisoned his family had the ground been polluted with chemicals or radiation.

The plot revolves around a Israeli soldier that lost his memories about Lebanon War in 1982 and interview other soldiers that were in the battlefield with him, in order to remember what actually happened there. The movie offers great visuals and an amazing soundtrack while depicting soldiers memories about that war.

    Steve, please check out the anime series Tokyo Magnitude 8.0! It's similar to this plot-wise, and it's really, really good; it's extremely realistic, with a great twist ending (not to mention a pretty big tear-jerker), and it also doesn't hold back at all, as far as the human suffering and death/destruction goes. The series isn't too long either, with just 11 episodes. Please give it a look sometime; I think you'd enjoy it, and that it would make for a great review, especially considering that I haven't really heard the series talked about too much. I think Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 is vastly underrated and underappreciated (and based on all the comments this has garnered, I'm definitely not the only one who feels that way 😊). More people need to be introduced to the show, and one of your reviews would be a great way to do it! ☺️

      I got more upset at one death in Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 that all of them in Japan Sinks 2020, because of how the characters reacted to it and the fact it wasn't happening all the time. Funnily enough, this anime is based on a 2006- Live-Action movie of the same name with the same premise. And I had the privilege of watching it in Japan itself. It never got an international release. And as a kid, the movie scared me but I also enjoyed it because it's what got me to like geology.
    The main difference is the 2006 movie focuses more on the Scientific Aspect and came up with a plot on how the sinking can be stopped while the anime focuses more on the survival of a group of people in a disaster-ridden country. The original movie does this too although not as much as the anime.
    I actually recommend the original movie. The CGI is very good even by modern standards.

      The sex and violence in Crybaby is more ...PG-13 in my opinion. The Black Mass was the worst part. Kinda like Goblin Slayer - the most shocking bits were in the first episode. It's good to compare the OVA and Crybaby. I loved both of them equally. I also liked Demon Lord Dante, but not as much as either (newer) Devilman. To be honest, I actually liked Daniel because not only is that my name, but he was just such a positive and zany guy, trying to cheer people up in spite of everything.
    But yeah, I’ll admit the midsection of the story did slow down the pacing a bit.
    Though I didn’t laugh when the kid got hit with a rock. I legitimately was shocked by that.
    Also side note, I did like the rap battle. It just felt like a nice moment even when the story was in its endgame.

    YESSS! HE REVIEWED IT!
    The most uncomfortable aspects of the show is how the events in the movie could really happen in real life and whenever something horrible happens, a happy movie will play and the characters just moves on.

    Love Yuasa Masaki's work...hate that his rise to fame in more mainstream media platforms were through series that LITERALLY kill off (gruesomely) most of their main characters via some kind of apocalypse. This was just like Devilman: Crybaby without the Supernatural, hyper violent and sexual elements with Biblical references sprinkled here and there.

    Definitely recommend looking up Devilman Crybaby and Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! They're both done by the same animator (Masaaki Yuasa), and his style takes a little while to get used to, but those two animes seem to untilize his style a little better (at least in my opinion). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Ayumu was so annoying in my opinion, there was this one part where the family needed to eat but ayumu decided to not eat the food because she was vegan resulting her father to die from trying to harvest some vegetable from a mine infested area. And not to mention the family trying to get some supplies from a store and all of a sudden ayumu started to bitch about how it’s stealing, which don’t get me wrong it is stealing but they have no choice the place around them is being destroyed the need the stuff.

      Aw man I cried so hard when he and Kite died. I had just gotten to the point where I was like, "Oh yeah, main cast made it through and managed to reunite! They're gonna survive and be a big happy family!" And then...
      Plus sacrifices just get me super easily. Idk I guess it was just the fact that these (technically) complete strangers were willing to sacrifice themselves for others as if they were family (because they kinda were). It just pulled at my heartstrings.

      @@skeltheshapeshifter2697 i mean kite didn't really die. You can see him in the last episode. The fact that he didn't show his face could be bcs he had frostbite scars. Also, the helicopter crew talked as if he was alreade rescued, not dead

    The beginning of this anime was so strong and realistic to the point that it will stick with me for quite a while... especially that first episode. Then the anime really starts to show the true colors of the creator, which are almost formulaic when familiar with it. Basically, if you've seen Devilman Crybaby you can see A TON of similarities. An affinity for white-haired/pale characters, the overuse of 'cool' English phrases and words, rapping scenes, track and field, rave/club/party scenes that have drug use and colorful lights, the (very sudden) killing of major characters, and philosophy-heavy in the final third. I thought Devilman Crybaby was just a very artistic re-imagining of the original Devilman OVA and manga, but now I think that the creator of Crybaby just found a story that was tailor-made for him to retell. I still enjoyed both, so this isn't exactly a bad thing, but if you hated Devilman Crybaby, you'll probably not really enjoy this one either.

    There's actually an older anime, that has exactly the same premise that came out years before this one, it's called "Tokyo Magnitude 8.0" which has a super dark turn at the end, might be worth taking a look at.
