    I just used your video to do a wheel bearing myself. no air hammer, no air tools, only hand tools and breaker bars. Got it done in a weekend. The new bearing sounds smooth. Thanks for your video.

    Yes I agree. It takes a long extension on that top 15mm bearing bolt, but those of us who do not have access to air tools and a full garage would most likely find it much easier to remove that tricky bolt with the shaft in place than to remove the entire shaft.

  • @1AAuto

    @Triple7Grinder Depends on your vehicle. This is a corroded car from the Northeast salt belt, a hammer and punch or screwdriver is possible but would have taken forever. A car from the south will probably come apart a LOT easier.

    Mine took about 11 hours of air hammering, grinding with a grinder & hitting with a 4 pound hammer to finally break it free. If your having trouble getting to the top bolt put a jack underneath the ball joint & jack it up level with the drive shaft then push drive shaft in a little it will give you just enough room to get a 15mm socket in there with an extension. Spray PB Blaster on the bolts. If you take off the lower ball joint you can remove the drive shaft then easily access the 3 bolts holding wheel bearing in. I used a pickle fork to break ball joint loose then a digging bar to get it out of its slot. Spray PB blaster on everything to make things a lot easier to remove & re assembly!

    I’d like to point out that the oem strut on this generation of Taurus is 1-2 inches longer than the one in the video. That should have been stated but it’s not-trust me as I watched this and then went through Hell getting the motorcraft strut out of the knuckle/back into it. I had to compress the underside of the strut and then hammer down the knuckle. To get it back on once the wheel bearing was installed required removing the lower ball joint. It is Much more difficult than this video shows.

    If it's very rounded off, you might need to get an extractor socket to remove it. They sell them on Harbor Freight com or you should be able to find them at your local Craftsman or parts store. Hope this helps you out.

    @BGChamp2019 Yes, usually one quick sharp blow will loosen it up. You just don't want to mushroom the end of the axle by striking it to many times.

    The crankshaft bearing is part of the engine and would be related to engine speed instead of vehicle speed. If you are unsure of exactly what the issue is, you should take your vehicle some place for a safety inspection. Most good shops will do this for free.

    For me the strut didn't come out the hole until i beat with a sledgehammer as i got mad lol. I had a hammer like his and she wouldn't come on out. Just beat downward on the knuckle until she comes up to where you can do the rest by separating it with two hands. Don't make the mistake i made and pry on the strut bolt metal strip along the side even though it is right there to pry on because it will break right off.

    I use an electric impact and it makes things easier. I am doing this on a 1997 Taurus SHO. The SHO has different struts that are semi active ride control struts. I thought I was going to have to remove the lower ball joint in order for the steering knuckle/spindle to swing down far enough to remove the axle in order to gain access to that top hub retainer bolt. I don't understand why you would remove the entire axle unless you are replacing that axle, as there is no need to remove the axle completely just to change a wheel bearing hub assembly on this car. Another thing I don't understand is why didn't you remove the brake caliper, bracket and rotor first, seems a little backwards to me but whatever works I guess.

    My 01 SE had 29mm nut on axle instead of a 30mm. In order to compress the strut spring, I had to lower it, compress it, then bolt back up. Only then could I get the strut out. Other than that, your video was right on target.

    Helpful video. Thanks. 2 things, though. You consistently call nuts, bolts. And you beat on the threaded ends of bolts with a hammer, thus potentially damaging the threads. Instead, put the nut back on a few turns and hit that to dislodge the bolt. This tip protects the threads.

    Why did this require removing the axle completely and disconnecting the strut and everything? Reason I ask is right now I have my Taurus lifted, the 3 bolts for the hub removed, the caliper/bracket removed, spindle nut removed, and the bearing absolutely will not come free. I have no concerns about the axle itself, I just want to replace the bearing, and it seems like it should just slide off the end of the axle, but I can't get it to budge.

    • @twilson636

    I know this comes a bit too late, but for anyone else running into this issue, you have to lower the subframe to gain additional room for the control arm. It's pretty straight forward; loosen the two subframe bolts (almost all the way) and you place your jack on the subframe and lower it a bit until you have enough clearance. Then just hammer away at the knuckle. Good luck!

    I keep hearing the little birdy inner voice say it's a crankshaft bearing. Is that wrong? What's the difference between wheel bearing and crankshaft bearing? I had the wheel bearing replaced once, and the rumbling vibrating in the right front wheel didn't shift. I keep thinking it's now bearing plus tie rod, once that corner took a deer pretty bad, but which bearing now...

    @A1Auto I just changed the the right front wheel bearing in my wifes 2001 ford Taurus.. she's telling me that it's making a squeaky/squealing noise when she turns to the right.. the brake caliper did seem a little tight when I took it apart like it was a little seized but she's saying the rim isn't getting hot and again.. she only hears it when she's turning right and putting her foot on or off the brake doesn't make any difference.. she sent me a video and it does sound pretty bad.. now I know that I didn't over tighten the CV axle nut and I'm pretty damn sure that I didn't bend the dust cover for the roader in and maybe that's what's rubbing.. do you think that I might just have a bad or defective bearing assembly? I'm really stumped by this one..

    • @deankruger2612
      @deankruger2612 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Before I embark on this project for my 2003 Ford Taurus, can you tell me if the loud groan/moaning noise that is very prevalent at speeds from 50-70 could be indicative of bad wheel bearings? The noise is very low and gets louder as I increase speed from 50 up to about 70. Speeds less than 50, no noise and after 70 the noise begins to fade away until 70 or so (highway speed limit is 75 in the area that I drive).

    • @1AAuto
      @1AAuto  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching. Unfortunately i can not verify weather that is the problem or not. However it does sound like a bearing. You could try turning side to side to see if it gets louder and quieter. You can even jack up the vehicle and check for play in the hub itself. Here is a link to the parts on our website.

      In my experience, speed-related growling can be three things - tire noise (particularly on FWD, if you let the back tires get cupped), bad hub bearings or other bearings, or a bad differential. I believe tires are the most common, the easiest (but not cheapest) to fix, and the easiest to debug.
      With front-wheel drive, it is absolutely imperative to keep the tires rotated every 5,000 or so. I've never ruined any myself, but I've helped people who have. If you catch it when the noise starts, usually only two tires are bad, so rotating the tires changes the noise location. Good way to possibly avoid potentially unnecessary repairs.
      After that it's all about getting under the car and figuring things out.

    • @Deucealive75
      @Deucealive75 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't have to completely remove it. Take the nut all the way off and push the axle as far into the hub as possible. Remove the caliper, the rotor, and then the 3 bolts for the hub/bearing assembly. You have to push the "CV axle" in to have clearance for the 3 hub bolts.

      Thank you for watching. They are the same bearing. The front left uses the same as the right front. If you get a pair you will get 2 of the same bearing. Hear is a link to the parts on our website

    @1aauto Could you tell me what kind of impact wrench/driver and the type of compressor I would need to get the hubnut off because that thing is giving me hell with the breaker bar. Should I use the 1/2 drive or 3/4 drive for the gun? And for the air compressor, how many gallons and PSI should It have?

    Can I use a propane torch on the hub then hammer it out?

      +Malaki Azaan Akecheta Thanks for watching! Yes that method can be used if the hub is really stuck on the knuckle.

    I have a 95 Taurus with pressed hub bearings. Is the process similar to a 96 or is it completely different

      +Donald Spurlin Thank you for checking us out. The process would be different based on the press out bearing style. At this time we do not have a video showing the replacement, but if you search for a Taurus forum there may be a step by step walk through available. 1aauto.com
