One of the things that T1 and T2 did was show just how much this stuff fucks up a person. Kyle is a guy who's never had decent meal or night's sleep in his life. He's from a world where a dog barking means death is coming. He's obsessed with the picture of a long dead woman. Then Sarah, after surviving the first movie has the weight of the future thrust on her shoulders. She's broken to the point of being willing to murder a man in front of his own children. Then someone decided Captain Boomerang and Daenerys Targaryen throwing snarky quips at each other was the way to go.
The theme of "Asia adapts Western properties with love and care, the West adapts Asian properties with contempt and condescension" is really galling. Even decades ago, you had the Animatrix on one hand and the 1998 Godzilla on the other. I think it's because, even to some degree in the more repressive places like China and Thailand, the kinds of middle class people who become artists have a greater appreciation for aesthetic quality and earnestness than their Western counterparts who grew up steeped in postmodernism.
The Terminator Resistance video game is basically the 3rd movie we always wanted and it brings the storyline into full circle. Same devs also made the great RoboCop game .
I’m willing to give salvation credit. It was pretty cool seeing what the dystopian Robot dominated world looked like even if the film was a bit of a mess. Terminator Resistance tho, what a ride. That’s definitely what Salvation should’ve been
Yea the guy could have done a better job of defending humanity. He could not even name ONE good thing humans have done in our entire history. He was a smart guy, youd think he would have hired an anthropology professor or something to talk to the AI.
Think about it: Would the world be better off without humans? What's the world supposed to be in this question?! It can't be the rest of the biosphere, since it was about complete nuclear destruction. But also, the universe is very big and humans are very rare, something like us most likely also.
In my mind, growing up in the future where there is no "beauty" art, luxuries, etc... the good stuff that humans create along with the guys who tried to kill misaki made him incredible cynical of humanity as well. Maybe that's why he doesn't put up a good argument, but then again the show never says that outright either.
@@johnwenzel2756 I could go along with that. He comes from a timeline where things go to shit. But hes very smart. Smart enough to know that if HE cant argue well on humanity's behalf, he should find someone who can. Its only the fate of human kind at stake here, try harder.
Funny the last two Drinker videos I watched were extremely positive. But the media would have us believe he's a negative only hate-monger. I've been watching drinker since day one. With his early film, game and series reviews. He's always been positive. It's so silly how hard they're trying to paint him as a hater. When He's simply an honest critic who isn't in anyones pockets so can speak his mind.
Only really possible if they all become colored green, fire lasers from their torso, have three-toed legs with each leg turning into missiles, and fight with great fervor for Skynet.
That is one trademark of Anime that really pisses me off. One of the best animes of all time can be unwatchable at times because of a certain character... looking at you, Cowboy Bebop.
Deadass you need to watch more anime 😂like Vinland saga berserk etc. The only annoying character in this show was reika the sister that’s about it kenta was a good kid character smart too . Hiro was the chubby heart . Reika was annoying running away to get a cat when her dad told her not to at all
I liked the story and the scenes with Malcom and Misaki. But I didn't like some of the action sequences with Eiko. WAY TO MUCH plot armor for my liking. > Why didn't the future terminator just crush her leg? > How was she taking punches from the present terminator?
The thing that annoyed me about the show was the Terminator could have easily snapped their necks so many times and didnt a machine would only care about proficiency
@madarpauser2133 and the time honored protagonists being thrown against a wall or across a room without smushing into pulp or breaking anything important.
More like the US capitalists found another resource to exploit. Japanese artists deserve so much better than becoming tools to people who don't care about art.
@@bigmikeobama5314 I agree with the negative judgment of T3, but the TV show is kinda unrelated to the movies. Also chronologically it plays out before the third movie, goes in a different direction, and the actors are different.
That girl shouldn't have died once ... she would have died dozens of times. It would have been kinda funny if it turned out she was a clone who retained her memories of failure and went back in time over and over again, thus learning each time, but then dying next time. I think there's an anime out there that grapples with this exact idea ... can't think of the name right now, though.
Ahh, Terminator: Dark Fate. The chance of a vehicle randomly dropping out of a plane and landing on top of the Hoover Dam are approximately 1 divided by the life of the universe. That's good writing.
I'm not even surprised, but I'm glad to hear it'll be worth a watch. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners already proved the concept as far as I'm concerned, and I've been really getting into anime for the past few years now. Can honestly say that I'm looking forward to new series and seasons of anime now than I have been for Hollywood media in a very, VERY long time.
U can generally trust animation to make what was suppose to be hundred million dollar projects into just a few millions. Animation is THE medium if u want to experiment with a story or concept, especially for genres like scifi or fantasy, where theyll be inherently expensive to make into live action.
I was thinking the other day, what happened to the Terminator being scary, what happened to "It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop... ever, until you are dead!"
This Anime is has no reason to be this outstanding... My tears run deep after watching this show. Never felt so hyped since T1 and T2. They cracked the Arnold Terminator code, i never thought i would appreciate any T800 model than Ernie's...but here i am.
The Sarah Connor Chronicles may not have been ground breaking TV, but it was still better than any of the movies they've put out since T1 & T2, w/ the exception of Salvation.
The female Terminator was amazing. The show is currently only one of four Western stories where there is a positive depiction of female robots and some guy some crush, or a close relationship which could develop in that direction. The writing was also funny, without making the show silly.
@@NoidoDev I've only really watched the series once, but I guess I missed him forming a crush on the female terminator. Summer Glau was interesting to watch either way, more convincing as a terminator than Kristanna Loken.
Terminator ended with T2 Judgement Day. All other sequels (aside from Salvation) is just T2 Redux. But not one cant escape the T800 and Ahnuld "Screw Your Freedoms" Schwarzenegger's image.
Arnold is not the problem. And anime is not the solution. The effeminate Japanese art style does not fit the theme of the show at all. It doesn't work for that new LOTR cartoon either. If anything, it should look like GI Joe or HeMan from the 80s.
It's not a hot to take, but it makes it even more annoying that they botched it once again. The anime can be quite entertaining, if you shut down your brain a little bit. Also, a war in future live action show could've worked. Last but not least, at this point I think they should let the franchise die, except computer games which don't change the original lore. Either based on the first two movies or the TV show.
This was the first series in a VERY long time that I’ve outright binged from start to finish. What a long overdue feeling it was to have such anticipation that I couldn’t wait.
dude.... what hooked me about this anime were the parallels to the OG, the dissimilarities utilizing an experience from a completely different part of the world....and the complete multitude of surprises at the very very end of the series... KOKORO split into 3 as 'Mind/Body/Spirit' was an excellent way to portray a counterpoint to the OG Skynet and I was fully hooked from start to finish. 10/10 will watch again.
Drinker and Nerdrotic have both been praising, "badass girl boss who is the key to everything" shows lately. I haven't bothered with Terminator Zero, but Arcane was unwatchable and they both gave it very high praise. I was shocked, honestly. Sure, the writing is a bit better than Disney Star Wars, but all the same elements are there. Women wildly overrepresented in leadership and combat positions, unexplained racial and cultural diversity, alphabet people everywhere, etc. Arcane (and from what I understand, Terminator Zero, as well) is everything they say they hate, with very slightly better character work.
@@jonsnowight9510 Agree about T Zero, disagree about Arcane. Maybe, because I played the game it's based on, dunno, but the story of Vi and Jinx was told very well imho. And the rest balances out. There are a "lot of women in leadership positions (not wildly overrepresented imho)" as well as racial, cultural diversity and "alphabet" people everywhere, because that's just how League of Legends started. They only somewhat built the universe slowly afterwards. And since the story centers around Jinx, it's expected to have Vi and Caitlyn in it as well, they are the main characters connected with her in the lore. Too bad you couldn't enjoy it for what it is, but for me it worked, because the entire universe it's based on isn't in the least realistic, it's basically technosorcery mixed with super"humans".
@Diree It's not the lack of realism that ruined it. It's the tired girl boss trope and the forced diversity and inclusion. Saying that fits the source material doesn't excuse it. It's just admitting the source material was compromised by the message. If you like it, fine. Have fun. I was just surprised to hear such praise from those guys about something so deeply steeped in the, "made for a modern audience" nonsense.
@@jonsnowight9510arcane was unwatchable? Let’s ignore the quality of the animation or the intricacies of the plot and the massive character arcs that play out over 9 episodes. Who is the badass girl boss who is the key to everything in arcane? Did Vander Silko Jas or Victor or Echo or Heimendinger not exist in your fantasy universe version of the show? Having competent female characters doesn’t make them girl bosses let alone the key to everything. Just like having representation from multiple different nations doesn’t equal pushing the message for the sake of inclusion. If you didn’t like it that’s fine but don’t ignore what is in the show or create imaginary things to cry about. That’s lazy like the people who claim drinker doesn’t like something cuz woman bad. Do better, plus admitting you haven’t watched one of the two shows you are basing your argument off is pathetic.
We have no idea who this “prophet” is or how she knows what she knows - her character is underdeveloped to the point that it hurts the narrative in the second half of the series.
Nice. I started the series today and watched 4 episodes so far. I'm liking it! So consider me glad that drinki did not tear the show apart before my eyes ^^
Waaaaay back in the 80’s at an obscure little art house cinema in Melbourne I saw an obscure japanese animated movie by the name of Akira lol. As I watched the absolutely glorious opening scene of rival bike gangs going to war in the streets of Neo Tokyo I was so blown away both by how amazingly beautiful it was but also by the utterly mind-blowing plot that I completely forgot I was watching an animated movie. This had never happened to me with an animated movie as I realised that in the west by and large they’re made for children with adults in tow whereas in Japan they are definitely made for adults and also regarded as culturally significant art. Never, not even once have I seen Akira listed in a western top ten best sci-movie compilation. I checked out blue eyed samurai after your positive review o drunken one and will do so with this as well. (I’d also liken to ad to the younger people that had the patience to read this that art house cinemas were a place we used to go to that had movie screens only slightly larger than the Ones most houses have in their living rooms nowadays lol)😊
The whole time I was just left feeling like see Hollywood this is how we do an engaging, thought provoking new terminator story while still hitting most of the classic beats.
It's been so long since I have seen a movie where they support humanity instead of hating on it, it's like they are not even trying to do it anymore, except the Godzilla minus one movie where you root for the humans.
Except side stories based on the first two movies, and of future war. Ideally only games. Or maybe making the follow up to the live action TV show. Better also just as a game.
1: I just cant stand how breathtaking the animation is on this. You mightve heard of the name production I.G before. They were responsible for making some of the most groundbreaking animation. Heck the Ghost in the shell: stand alone complex series was an absolute blast. So i have been sort of hyped with it. They absolutely nailed it. I kind of felt like that this is a perfect recipe for a terminator anime spinoff. 2: i think it just me, but the storyline here felt sort of fresh. It exactly look like the old terminator movies where skynet burst humanitys bubble and put the entire human race at risk, though this time they added some stuff that we have been sort of asking about alongside a new spin. The concept of travelling through time is really well explained. Normally with what most people think about time travelling is that people are able to just go back to the past. Sounds simple at first, but then when you get to a most scientific part of the analysis, it get really complex. With how time travelling actually works in this universe works exactly the same, but you somehow enter in a past of another timeline adjacent to it. So basically, it creates a sort of new one with a different outcome based on chance and timing. Every dimension have a sort of different timeline with different outcomes. On one hand you have the possibility of humanity and machine working together, and the other would be where theirs nothing left on earth. Without the presence of humans, the machines undergo the same situation as the humans does. Without them, the machines slowly decays and dies out. I think this series kind of explain the whole timey wimey stuff very well. 3: im just kind of glad that someone from the other part of the planet went ahead and help create something relating to old movie media. Masashi kudō knows what the terminator franchise needs. Some better explanation with whats going on alongside putting his own ideas into the universe. This is what ive been expecting for american media adapting towards japanese anime/manga. If done well, it could end up something unique. Something special for the years to come. I was almost certain that the terminator franchise is just done and beaten up like a dead horse, but with this unexpected announcement, i really do have some hope that it can finally be improved in a way. Terminator zero is exactly that. A perfect example that it can be capable of standing back up tall. This spinoff really have potential that it can still walk. Just hoping that the second season wont screw it up since i watched all 8 episodes and really am deeply invested into seeing where it might be going next. Its alongside blue eye samurai. Its great. Just dont screw anything up netflixl 9/10.
I'm glad you've jumped on it. Its surprisingly good 👍 only a few little things but overall great. Yeah she definitely shouldn't have survived getting hammered in the back like that!
Amazing visuals and okeyish premise of the story carries this show. Characters (except Eiko) drag it down to oblivion, if you spend 5 seconds thinking about them, almost nothing they do and say make sense, reeks of Hollywood character writing.
September 26, 2024 - I'm glad The Drinker reviewed Terminator Zero. I'm about half way through the first season. The series is helping to fill my action/adventure viewing schedule, but I don't like it as much as The Drinker does. The kid characters are annoying, the scientist's pleading the case for the survival of mankind is boring, and I see the lead female character as just another "girl boss" "with exceptional skills." There are Anime series that I really enjoy, like "Overlord" and "Blood of Zeus". Those series have plots that I find interesting, have wonderful animation, and "Blood of Zeus" is well written with very adult themes and plots.
@maisuchan6209 Yeah, but that doesn't seem to be his top priority now. For some reason he decided that attacking the people who push back against woke crap is his life's mission now, maybe he feels he did it first and they beat him in terms of viewers and popularity so he is jealous. Or maybe it's a bit of a superiority complex, no idea really, I stopped watching his channel once he spiraled out of control and started posting videos and community posts nonstop about Drinker and the rest of the Fandom Menace.
I mean... let the guys who made Ghost in the Shell series have a crack at Terminator.... it'll probably psychologically scar an entire generation, but it's for the best at this point.
@@santos8468 Well, yes. But tthe setting is more like Blade Runner direction, but with super-tech like combat androids and cyborgs that can rip apart tanks.
@kerravon4159 Even before Zack turned into the anti anti-sjw warrior, he had the WORST taste in movies. It was a running joke in the comment section. It's become pretty clear that Zack's issue all along was jealousy. He didn't care so much that the media was trash, he was just pissed because he had no shot of getting hired at Marvel/DC to make it.
To be fair, this anime is still better than most shows and movies that come out currently. It's just not great, because of a lot of flaws. But it is enjoyable, if you can turn your brain off or just don't care about plausibility and lore.
Biggest flaw I had with the first episodes was how cucked their view of humanity was. Like you said they don’t even really try to argue for the positives really and includes some pathetic logic.
Japan isn't a bastion of hope these days and the general mood is that the Japanese race and culture is basically over. You won't hear this from the internationalised Japanese who share western viewpoints either (basically the reverse weebs who are equally gross). You need to speak to the regular Japanese who doesn't speak English or subscribe to western viewpoints and also get past their 建前/public facing opinion to get to their real views. But it shows VERY obviously in Japanese media.
@@TheClintonio interesting, what are some of the big factors that make them take that view? Westernization and globalism? Or more local social or political developments?
The best positives of humanity are out weighed by the negatives, just basic maths: for every slefless person there are far more that wouod justify nuclear holocuast, hell even the ones that are selfless, good people, they will still hustify some fuked stuff, genocide, slavery, pollution, ecocide… So yea, on the whole we are pretty bad, and that sucks cus really we arent all that bad, its just when we get do much power we end up burning the earth to nothing, and justify it in the name of progress and justice and revenge.
the AI was basing everything on Raw data and the sad truth for humanity the data paints a very bleak picture, on group/country level. Like our moral system is based on what's best for the group. something Malcom had a hard time disapproving as when a country does a nice deed their is mostly a self serving motive underneath. its how they weave time lines plot line in as its a truly selfless act from another humanity.
Sorry, but this story moved at a snails pace and I couldn't make it past episode 3 because (tiny spoiler) as soon as I saw a 140lb woman punching and kicking a T-800, and instead of shattering her bones, she actually knocks it back, stuns it, and then pushes it down an elevator shaft.... I was done with this. What a shame.
I've stopped watching at the same moment. The script was stupid and made me nervous. A shame people is pushing for this. So many great anime shows and this is not one of those
@@jischneider perhaps you are wrong. note she wasn't exactly winning in those fights. the elevator shaft push was stupid but most ofthe fights she is fighting a delaying action.
You whiners should stay the fuck from anime if you can't handle a woman pack up a robot. Kill La Kill's main character is thin as shit and is also the single most op character in the series. Chainsaw Man has several women who can be considered overpowered and one of them is a lesbian.
I wasn’t really sure to expect anything good from TZero. Let me be more clear and cohesive: I was expecting the regular shyte we get from it. But man, hearing the Drinker giving his sign of approval just pushed me to the fast lane to watch it! You can trust the Drinker’s wisdom! Thanks man! Go away now!
I almost didn't watch the series due to the intro scene where the lady somehow outran the terminator's minigun. I'm glad I did though, it turned out to be quite interesting, even though it had some more cringe moments.
You didn't miss much. Only people who can ignore such things can even enjoy the show somewhat. It's below the threshold, it should not have been made. Blame! and Vivy are better Terminator inspired anime.
it def has some plot issues, and god the plot armor in the opening scene was insane, terminator goes from outreacting a grenade to not being able to hit someone running in a straight line.
Spoilers The one that comes to stop them from time traveling but instead of doing that it just ignores them time traveling to kill a random kid so it can seem dramatic. This show is really dumb...
Not to mention driving a truck off the road with a Terminator on the hood, only to do a "sick" backflip onto the roof, running back up it to land back where she started, Just like human beings can't. Remember Kyle? The odds weren't in his favour and that's what makes Terminator work. Nobody told Netflix.
T-800 was programed not to kill the kids, its revealed in the twist at the end on who sent the terminator, the guy hated his father, but not his siblings.
SPOILER What the others said. There are actual plot related reasons why it didn't massacre any of the main characters like it did everybody else (though one does get pretty seriously injured a couple times). You don't even really need to know the plot twist to know to some extent why it wasn't trying to kill the kids. You'd almost have to not be paying much attention to think that's what it was trying to do the whole time. They established pretty early on that this T-800 was trying to capture them and use them as bait to draw out Malcom because it couldn't successfully reach him at his work place without compromising itself or easily getting deactivated in the process, so the kids were a workaround to coerce cooperation. Fearing that it may have killed them after it took out Malcolm was a valid concern, but killing them beforehand would have been completely counterproductive to its primary objective. If Malcom didn't hole up in his tower with Kokoro, going after the kids would have almost been completely unnecessary. The reasons for its apparent mission parameters isn't fully revealed, potentially anyway, until later when it was revealed who may have sent it. This is assuming that it wasn't a misdirect, but I don't really buy that it was since misdirection would take away from the drama and stakes of potential future seasons.
I'm glad you reviewed this! I also thought it was good, but couldn't tell if it was just slightly okay, and I was starved for Terminator content. Agree that Malcolm's "yeah humans are rubbish" is just not likely in someone as intelligent as he's meant to be.
As much I liked it too, I keep seeing videos saying that this saved the franchise. And personally I don't think it did, considering spin offs can't hold a franchise on his own, especially troubled ones, just look at what happened with the Mandalorian.
@@solidbeard8324 Not gonna say it saved the franchise but it definitely gave a little bit of life back to it. It wasn’t perfect but it did do some new ideas for once and strayed away from fucking with the original first 2 films. It brought some of the horror elements back too. Especially being set in japan where guns are barely a thing there which makes fighting a terminator way more frightening. It definitely had some plot holes and some issues that id criticize but i definitely still had a good time with it as a big terminator fan myself. It didn’t disrespect me the way “Dark Fate”did…..
I’m someone who believes the terminator “franchise” should never have been and it should have just been Terminator 1, 2 and Salvation (salvation has problems but it undoubtedly is the 3rd best film) I’m not too interested in the story without John Connor because he is literally the key to humanity winning the war. James Cameron’s original two films worked on a bootstrap theory that there is no multiple timelines, The terminator in the original essentially creates (or at least speeds up) sky net and Reese creates John. I don’t mind them doing the multiple timeline thing but I wasn’t a fan at all of the seemingly undermining of the original films where Malcom basically says “The resistance and Skynet were stupid in going back in time” it’s a bit disrespectful considering one of them wasn’t just a “resistance leader” he was the saviour of mankind. Comes across almost pretentious… without two of the greatest films of all time, the series itself wouldn’t exist. Aside from that I found it fairly entertaining.
I get it, but I have zero problems with it. What you say is true that Connor was the lynchpin to defeating the machines, but it not only makes sense why Malcolm would think the way he does given his experiences, but there's nothing wrong with different characters presenting different perspectives. Malcolm having his own perspective on the matter, especially when he had nothing to do with John or Sarah, doesn't negate or invalidate the premise Cameron's story started from.
Nice to see you covering more anime. I’ve been an anime blogger for something like 28 years, so that’s all my life. I’ll have to pick the show up quickly!
Respectfully, I'm going to disagree with you on this one, Drinker. I binged the whole series as well and I can best summarize my experience of "Terminator Zero" as extremely predictable, preachy, overly long-winded, and in many cases a direct re-tread of scenes that we've already seen that were done better in T1 and T2 for the sake of nostalgia-bait. Again, I want to emphasize that I respect and admire your input on film and pop-culture, but this is one time I have a divergence of opinion. Still, I appreciate your hard work and witty banter. Cheers, good sir!
This show is TEEEERRRIBLE. The terminators have the aim of storm troopers, the main character takes one on hand to hand and survives, the children are annoying, and things happen conveniently to move the plot forward. I'm on episode 4 and it's painful to get through. Not sure if I'll finish. 🤦🏻♂️
If its an action movie/show, and a female is the lead protagonist, then Im out. There never has been, and never will be, a time when a female is the best choice to save humanity. There are many essential roles that females play, but Saving, Protecting, and Defending humanity are not one of them.
@@jbgtly4930 To OP she's not and this video says as much. @@jbgtly4930 It can work as an exception but it has been so overused for that, or if the female is not a human, or if she doesn't have the role of the action hero.
I 100% agree with your take on Terminator: Zero. I've never been a fan of anime but I'm a huge fan of the Terminator series so I took a chance on this and was pleasantly surprised. I think Terminator: Zero is probably the best thing to happen to the series since Terminator 2
The bare bones story could have been it's own thing, but I do think it's made better by being a Terminator entry. Part the premise of the show is seeing what the concepts and thematic ideas of the Cameron movies would look like from a different angle/perspective. The ideas in and of themselves are interesting, but a lot of the weight they carry in the story comes from how they're explored in the context of this particular franchise. I think the plot and story are interesting enough that it can be enjoyed on its own merits, but you're definitely getting more from it the more you approach it with a pre-existing understanding and appreciation of the Cameron films.
The ironic part is episode 5 is where the show stops being a homage to the first movie and for better or worse goes where no other terminator movie has gone and paves its own path forward
@@jovenc4508i can see not liking it for what it tries to do differently, but suffer? People on the internet seriously need to stop talking about everything as though it's either the greatest or worst thing in existence.
If there are multiple timelines, why would Skynet bother sending a terminator back? It wouldn't change their past, it would just create a new timeline.
@@Tani_the_drunk I highly doubt a supercomputer like Skynet who was capable of creating time travel in the first place is incapable of figuring out alternate timelines seeing as that's been something for almost as long as science fiction and even the study of time has been a thing. Yet some random woman in a derelict camp knows all about it. Give me a break.
@@jovenc4508not necessarily. Just because you can observe something and tap into it doesn't mean you fully understand it. Take us and our knowledge and understanding of things like dark matter, black holes, or even human consciousness for example. As much as we can study, observe, and even manupulate the human mind, we still have no real clue about the fundamental nature of human consciousness and what makes us tick. Even in our technology, the last century alone is full of examples of man-made technology whose consequences and implications we don't fully understand. Bottom line, humans do, observe, and create things all the time without fully understanding everything about them.
I literally cut it off after first watching a 1,000lb terminator latch onto her leg and she didn't fall, then she physically pushed a terminator down an elevator shaft after taking some hits. If they had explained how that was possible for a human right away, I would have kept watching. Guess I'll give it a return.
I think there were at least three scenes in the first episode alone, where she would have needed to die. It's okay to watch, if you can turn your brain off call just ignore these things. But Blame! and Vivy are better Terminator inspired anime.
Are they 1 000 lb? It doesn't fit their role as infiltrators - just make everyone walk over a weighbridge and there's your Terminator detector. Or a wooden plank that breaks. Forget about blending in with humans in vehicles or elevators. A skeleton made of tubular Grade 5 titanium could be far more durable than bone for the same weight. Add in futuristic alloys and low-density fake organics, and there's no reason a Terminator has to be super-heavy.
Oh yeah lets not forget how the terminators cant hit a single female with a minigun capable of firing 3000 to 6000 rounds per minute when she's only a few meters away. Fuck this show
I can get past that because it's anime...but unless anything story wise explains this....there's no way she's holding a terminator with one hand on some rope....kinda sucks cause I do think there are some genuinely good things about the show but the more I watch the more it seems like typical girl boss bullshit....just masked better in anime format.
Do you really think this happened (or rather didn't happen) because Eiko was a woman? Did you miss the multiple scenes when entire crowds of people comprised of both men and women were brutally massacred? I think it's fair to levy criticisms when a story stretches the suspension of disbelief beyond belief, but this and a lot of the other criticisms like it in this comment section really look like selectively choosing to reject the suspension of disbelief entirely because of the sex of one of the characters involved. I'm trying not to cringe at even saying this in the first place, but it's hard to deny that the only reason why so many here are only complaining about the suspension of disbelief in this case us because Eiko is a woman. I agree that the show does have a little bit of plot armor, but it isn't driven by gender ideology. It's driven by common things used in both anime and action stories in general that ask the audience's suspension of disbelief.
@Tyler_W who the fuck cares what sex it was. A target standing only a few minutes away from a gun that fires 3000-6000 rounds per minute and avoids getting hit at all is completely b.s. oh and who gives a fuck when some random people that have nothing to do with the plot get shot. Just shows how b.s it is when they have a single target and can't hit shit so don't play the whole shit argument that "its a women that's why you mad" crap.
Yep, I watched it after seeing this video, I enjoyed it very much, it was great to see the terminator universe expanded but also keeping true to form. The music and animation were great too. Thanks Drinker for testing what can mostly be unpleasant and poisonous waters. This time the report back was "come on it, the water's fine!"
Because he is a sane person who is not a blind follower of one side. He states what he likes and what he doesn't like without having to adhere to nonsensical rules imposed by either side.
Notice how they’re attacking Drinker and not the other way around? Doesn’t take a genius to spot clout chasing clowns trying to make a name for themselves at an established creator’s expense. I’ll bet it keeps them all up at night knowing that Drinker (likely) doesn’t even know who they are.
More and more, Japanese media, and anime in particular has been my go to, cuz the story is still first. and there's some VERY good stories being told in anime. Frieren is one of those stand-outs. The best fantasy series we've gotten in decades.
I watched the first two episodes so far and really enjoyed it. I'm not a huge anime fan (just an old-school T1 and T2 fan), but TZ is really well done. The hard part is avoiding spoilers until i can finish it up haha.
I love that USA couldn't keep their mits out of this one and force a little diversity, in Japan, with the major protagonist. LUCKILY, from what I've heard, he doesn't use his race in any way, just you know just a typical Japanese African family in a 99% ETHNICALLY PURE NATION like Japan.
It becomes plausible in the show. But still, I share your criticism. The way I came to think about it: The franchise owner or Netflix had guidelines supporting that, but at the same time they did not have guidelines covering the quality, preventing mistakes. This is infuriating.
SPOILER: To be fair, he did come from the future and was the leading developer in AI where there were few people left to pick from. No way implied it was due to "diversity". Why Japan though? Because anime. It's not like the new Assassin's Creed game where they picked the only Black guy that might have been in Japan back then.
There are a lot more people of mixed heritage in Japan now than you might expect, especially in Toyko and the other big cities. The country's demographics are changing, with an ever-increasing number of foreigners coming in. Having lived here for half of my life now, I can say that it is quite believable. Anime/manga artists have also been playing around with non-traditional characters since at least the 80s. They don't need "foreign influence" to prompt them into it.

People can say what they like about the sarah connor chronicles but I felt it really captured exactly that problem with the cast.
Thankfully the Americans redeemed their Godzilla mistake with the Monster verse

Yea the guy could have done a better job of defending humanity. He could not even name ONE good thing humans have done in our entire history. He was a smart guy, youd think he would have hired an anthropology professor or something to talk to the AI.
This just reminds me of the trope that most technically skilled intellectuals are doomers.

It is, but it is still really bad. It does the "Monster doesn't kill them for no reason" thing all the time. There is so much wrong in the show.
U can generally trust animation to make what was suppose to be hundred million dollar projects into just a few millions.
Animation is THE medium if u want to experiment with a story or concept, especially for genres like scifi or fantasy, where theyll be inherently expensive to make into live action.

That's what I am thinking. Anime was probably the smartest choice to try and revive a dead franchise.
Arnold is not the problem. And anime is not the solution. The effeminate Japanese art style does not fit the theme of the show at all. It doesn't work for that new LOTR cartoon either. If anything, it should look like GI Joe or HeMan from the 80s.

Dear Drinker, you should take a look at the TV Show "Pantheon". If Terminator Zero surprised you, this underrated show will blow your socks off.
Sorry, I just can't get over the girl going HAND TO FUCKING HAND with a T-800
That was the exact moment I stopped watching. Utter bullshit!

Except side stories based on the first two movies, and of future war. Ideally only games.
Or maybe making the follow up to the live action TV show. Better also just as a game.
I think Alan Ritchson would make a good Terminator.
I gave it a chance because it was visually outstanding. Once the story started, it felt oddly familiar & cheap and that was that.
Its great. September 26, 2024 - I'm glad The Drinker reviewed Terminator Zero. I'm about half way through the first season. The series is helping to fill my action/adventure viewing schedule, but I don't like it as much as The Drinker does. Not to mention driving a truck off the road with a Terminator on the hood, only to do a "sick" backflip onto the roof, running back up it to land back where she started,
Just like human beings can't.
Remember Kyle?
The odds weren't in his favour and that's what makes Terminator work.
Nobody told Netflix.
To say that “the plot has some issues” is like saying “a beehive has a few insects” - the narrative falls apart in the second half!
@@braddl9442 the one sent back in time literally kills his family, tf u on about?
I found the plot armour of the main characters painful what's to fear from a T-800 if it can't kill a few kids
Spoiler
At the end he captures one and chooses not to kill it. Because his target was always Malcolm.
T-800 was programed not to kill the kids, its revealed in the twist at the end on who sent the terminator, the guy hated his father, but not his siblings.
SPOILER
What the others said.
I actually really enjoyed this show it’s refreshing and well made. I look forward to it continuing
@@solidbeard8324
Not gonna say it saved the franchise but it definitely gave a little bit of life back to it.
@@austinclark5278 that for sure. It reignite my love for the franchise after Genysis and Dark Fate.
A little hyperbolic on Zero saving Terminator but at least it have some good new content for a series that hasn’t had it in years
That's probably fair, but it's easily the best thing it has going for it (other than the Terminator Resistance game).
I just remember whatsherface taking multiple body shots from a terminator and turning it off
and then she overpowered it and pushed it down the elevator shaft. Not a cyborg btw.
Binged Zero in my hotel room in Bari, Italy. So surprised with how good it was ❤
Nice to see you covering more anime.
I feel you, but I see this as part of Anime Style...
I seriously cant handle yet another girlboss. I'm all girlbossed out.
If its an action movie/show, and a female is the lead protagonist, then Im out. There never has been, and never will be, a time when a female is the best choice to save humanity. There are many essential roles that females play, but Saving, Protecting, and Defending humanity are not one of them.
@@jbgtly4930
To OP she's not and this video says as much. She survives stuff that probably an average human wouldn't but it's a show
To this chap, wasn't Sarah Connor one of the protagonists in both 1&2? Ripley in Alien, well written characters are well written characters...
It's one thing to hate a Mary sue archetype (which are overdone and boring AF) another just to become some grey sludge whinging if a woman isn't just a damsal
@@jbgtly4930
It can work as an exception but it has been so overused for that, or if the female is not a human, or if she doesn't have the role of the action hero.
@@maverickmic shes a terminator bro?
@maverickmic ok simp thank you for defending women.
I 100% agree with your take on Terminator: Zero. I've never been a fan of anime but I'm a huge fan of the Terminator series so I took a chance on this and was pleasantly surprised. I think Terminator: Zero is probably the best thing to happen to the series since Terminator 2
This was a wonderful show and I am looking forward to seeing more. MOTTO MOTTO ONEGASHIMASU.
This kind of sounds like it didn't need to be connected to the Terminator franchise at all. Just an original show.
no one would watch it, because its mediocre. So by slapping the terminator IP, they fetch attention and money. Further milking the franchise.
That's crazy. My number one way to describe this show to my friends was "A tired retread"
I quit watching by episode 4
A retread of what? Your friends probably don't take your opinion very seriously.
The ironic part is episode 5 is where the show stops being a homage to the first movie and for better or worse goes where no other terminator movie has gone and paves its own path forward
@@Viper3220
I suffered through the whole thing. You're not missing anything.
@@jovenc4508i can see not liking it for what it tries to do differently, but suffer? People on the internet seriously need to stop talking about everything as though it's either the greatest or worst thing in existence.
@@Tyler_W
It's not just what it tries to do differently that's bad. The entier show is bad start to finish.
If there are multiple timelines, why would Skynet bother sending a terminator back? It wouldn't change their past, it would just create a new timeline.
It's explained in the show. Skynet isn't aware of this. It was created by humans and has some of the same flaws.
@@Tani_the_drunk
I highly doubt a supercomputer like Skynet who was capable of creating time travel in the first place is incapable of figuring out alternate timelines seeing as that's been something for almost as long as science fiction and even the study of time has been a thing. Yet some random woman in a derelict camp knows all about it. Give me a break.
@@jovenc4508 Watch it then if you don't believe me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Short answer - the series has needed multiple timelines since 2, otherwise 2's ending makes 1 nonsensical.
Bottom line, humans do, observe, and create things all the time without fully understanding everything about them.
you should really do a Drinker Anime Channel! Your mind would be blown on all the good shows that are out there. 🙏🏻
I totally agree with you, sir. I cannot wait for a season two it’ll be interesting to find out what happens.
@@NoidoDevstop justifying crap by saying "just turn your brain off". That's one of the reasons movie media is in the abysmal state it's in today 😑
To be fair, a terminator might be as light as 500 pounds.
@@BryceShamwow I just looked it up. 400-650 You are correct.
I agree, this was good. Happy to see you sticking to your guns on this even though others in the sphere didn't like it.
I was blown away how much I liked this show. It was a good slow burn that paid off in spades by the end.
This just sounds like the same story with Asian characters.

Tbf, the globalists did just force them to open their borders and letting africans get in now so it's only a matter of time.
