Have you been watching DIYPerks? He did a few videos on reusing displays for lighting and also fake windows that have a sense of depth to them using the diffusers inside. In fact broken monitors and TV's are a good source for diffusers for lighting and the back of the casings a good source of flat plastic for making things.
You're absolutley right... there is some really good material in these things that can be re-pourposed for other projects!! - And I have a lot of projects on my list :-)
Good idea for the backlight. I have a small monitor that has a bad LCD controller chip in it so I may do just this (or I could change the chip and recover the monitor).
@@DubiousEngineering hey thanks for the fast reply. by simulate do you it requires power through the HDMI as well. because I tried to just leave a HDMI cable with nothing connected to it. it didn't work
Hi Doubious, do you happen to still have the part number of the IPS panel from inside? It would help me out, to see if it is worth to pop open a broken lg 34WL750 that we have.
My monitor just randomly stopped working and when I plug in the power source to the monitor the light doesn’t light up but the pc works just fine I don’t know if it’s the power source of the monitor
the leds on perfectly one side of the monitor shorted or something now the left side is super dim. Not completely black but dim as hell.. I wish tv repair shops near me would do monitor also but they don't
It's a LG so will probably literally turn blue! They have a problem with the phosphor "burning out" on the blue leds they use and the displays turn very blue. Have a LG 49" UHD TV to fix when I get my workshop finished.
Interesting... well... its mostly gone to recycle now, but I have an iiyama 34" monitor that I do my video editing on ... I'm happy with it!! - I hope to drop that switch up your way one day this week when I take the wife shopping!! :-) Don't worry, I wont come-in, will just post it through the letter box!!
How did you power the backlight panel? You mentioned you found a power supply for it. You got me inspired to try to attempt to get a working light panel from a broken LG 34UM58. But I'm a bit of a noob in regards to electric stuff, so hope you're willing to help a fellow out.
There didn’t seem to be a way to actually unclip the back cover without breaking the plastic tabs... I tried a spudger and various things... to no avail
@@DubiousEngineering No , I'm from India. btw. I contacted with Lg , My display panel had an issue . Yeah, I sprayed sanitizer on it lol . And it went into the panel xD . Lg said it will cost almost 60% of the monitor price
Very interesting Howard, I have never seen inside a TV monitor before, thank you for this video.
Glad you enjoyed it! thanks for watching! :-)
Got a few old monitors that might make some cool photo lightboxes for large transparency film
Very cool... you can check your x-rays too :-)
@@DubiousEngineering yours is big enough to do a full chest x-ray!

You have to find and buy the chip?... probably a ASIC - may be difficult to find programmed!!
Not a lot in this is there!! - Makes me wonder how they can charge so much!! :-)
It's the speed of the display that dictates the cost. Most 1080p screens are 60Hz gaming monitors are 144Hz
Aha... so It’s all about how quickly they can refresh the little LED pixels to make the pictures super smooth!!!
@dubious do you happen to know how to keep the backlit always on ?
You need something to simulate the HDMI input port

So sorry…. Unless it’s in the video, nope… all gone now
My monitor just randomly stopped working and when I plug in the power source to the monitor the light doesn’t light up but the pc works just fine I don’t know if it’s the power source of the monitor
Put a multimeter on the connector of the power brick to see if its giving voltage out.

So sorry to hear... sucks! Especially when it’s not that hard to fix... oh well... buy a new one!!
@@DubiousEngineering Trust me if I could afford to drop another $600 on a new 34 inch ultrawide that easily, I wouldn't be looking for a repair shop

Sorry it was a long time ago - I can’t remember
Could you not get a new IPS panel from AliExpress and fit it?
Well... I didn’t know they sold them!! I’m off to take a look...
Do you still have the PCB board? looking to purchase one
I'll have a look but not likely sorry

I don’t think you can
It amazes me how little there is in TV's these days. Hardly worth taking apart LOL.
You’re right Dave... it’s a throw away society... sadly :-(
I need to open one up without breaking it anyone know the correct process?
good luck
