Takes me back to 1971 when I heard it for the first time at the age of 12. Went with my parents to have dinner with some friends of theirs. They had a 14 year old daughter who played the whole IV album for me. I was kind of blown away and scared by it (I was a Partridge Family fan at the time). Four Sticks really kind of scared me! It seemed like other worldly music to me at the time. By 1973, I bought Houses of the Holy as soon as it came out. This song always reminds me of girls from the summers of my youth...

I have heard this song ever since I was a little kid, I'm now 54 years old. It never gets old, It still gives me goosebumps. Beautiful song. Page on acoustic guitar and John Paul Jones on mandolin.

Back in the day we used to listen to entire album sides at one sitting. Take side one of Led Zeppelin IV, for example. Soon after the needle landed in the groove, you'd hear those warbly scratching sounds leading into Robert Plant's opening wail that kicks off "Black Dog", with its heavy blues bombast. Next would be the drum filled launch of "Rock and Roll" and the lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time concluding with more drum flourishes. "The Battle of Evermore" came next, providing time to catch your breath and adjust your ears with some soothing folk music in preparation for the masterpiece to follow, "Stairway to Heaven". Flip the record over and the first song up is "Misty Mountain Hop", a groovy ode to hippy gatherings and anti-war protests in the park. Next up is "Four Sticks", as in four drum sticks, in which John Bonham shows off his chops with odd time signatures. Then came "Going to California" -- another breath catcher ear soother in preparation for the heavy blues bombast of "When the Levee Breaks" that rounds out the album. Taken together each song naturally leads to the next to create a complete experience.

I have always loved the hard driving funky, bluesy groove their music had that went straight to the soul and put you in a space away from reality...........much better than drugs! He has an amazing voice and it is definitely the vibe it’s so chill....Have you ever heard the Moody Blues Nights in White Satin? I’m vibin like that too! 💜 Im requesting that you listen to that & Nick Cave & the Bad seeds -into my Arms, I also wanted to say that one line he was talking about “tryin to find a woman that never been boned” I don’t know if that’s true or if it is I still don’t mind it’s my favorite song ever I don’t have a top 10 I have a top 100,000,000,000 and this is the first one to make my heart sing with it!

I've seen in the comments people suggesting Battle for Evermore. I absolutely agree, they are acoustical sister set-up songs on the album, as to what was before and after on the album. You mention the lack of drums, and it's on purpose for the album flow. Heavy percussion presence on the song before, and the song after is immediately recognized on the first five beats! A masterpiece of arrangement on the album.
Thanks for sharing, you're on fire today!

What made Led Zeppelin so great was their ability to play so many different styles and textures of music that they're unrivaled in that fact. From blues, folk , rock and roll and jazz to exotic music such as Reggae , psychedelic , country, calypso, metal and so much more. They never wrote a bad song a couple of them were only OK but but almost every song is a treasure.

Spend my days with a woman unkind
Smoked my stuff and drank all my wine
Made up my mind, make a new start
Goin' to California with an achin' in my heart
Someone told me there's a girl out there
With love in her eyes and flowers in her hair
Took my chances on a big jet-plane
Never let 'em tell ya that they're aw-ooh-all the same
Hoh, the sea was red and the sky was grey
I wonder how tomorrow could ever follow today-hee
Mountains and the canyons start to tremble and shake
The children of the sun begin to awake
    Now
    Watch out
It seems that the wrath of the gods got a punch on the nose
And it's startin' to flow, I think I might be sinkin'
Throw me a line, if I reach it in time
Meet you up there where the path runs straight and high
Find a queen without a king
They say she plays guitar and cries and sings, la-la-la-la
Ride a white mare in the footsteps of dawn
Tryin' to find a woman who's never, never, never been born
Standin' on a hill in the mountain of dreams
Tellin' myself it's not as hard, hard, hard as it seems

This song is what I'd call an "interlude".
To put it in context, you should really listen to tracks 6, 7 (this song), and 8 from their 4th album.
"Four Sticks" is a high energy song, but it's very unique. No other band has done anything similar to it.
Then this song mellows you out and loosens you up... and you're slipping into dreamland as it fades "aaaahhh"... then "Boom-bop-ba-Bam!" the venerable "When the Levee Breaks" kicks in, and takes you on a ride!
You see, "back in the day" an album wasn't just a collection of "the latest crap I wrote"... It was carefully crafted (the really good ones anyway). They would have other really good songs that wouldn't make it onto the album, because the songs, and the arrangement of them on the album, had to have an ebb and flow, and take you on a journey, a ride that you didn't want to get off of... 🤯

No John Bonham. Jimmy Page on acoustic guitar and John Paul Jones on mandolin. BTW, the first syllable of Bonham is pronounced "Bahn."
