DpZ...this is a free market economy and people do things you will like and dislike in all aspects of the money and greed game. There are winners and losers because it's not a perfectly controlled machine and the better you are at the game the better you can do in life. Who cares what others do, just do the best you can and don't worry so much about what others do.

Hey nice to see both of you guys here! Dennis knows I am a big Griffey guy and I have frequently bid to prop up prices on rare cards in auction that are also cards in my PC. Good example. 1995 Finest Refractor, that card wont fall below $1500 because I will 100% buy that card at $1500. My "prop up bids" ARE NEVER more than what I am actually willing to pay. I look at it as I do with stocks...if one falls below a buy pt for me, I will add more to my position to lower my cost basis but also to support the shares I have. This has probably been happening in the hobby since the hobby went on-line.

As long as you pay for the item you bid on, it isn’t shilling. Whether it’s a card you already own or not is irrelevant. Shill bidding is when you bid and have no intention of paying.

I agree, if you buy a second copy or a hundredth copy you are a part of that markets supply and demand. No issue if you pay for it.

“I don’t like you buying this second card because it’s a good deal.” (And now serious collectors are being deprived of this card!)
That’s not exactly what you’re saying, but that’s kind of what I’m hearing.
My first response on this video got deleted, maybe because I put my email address in it… Anyway…
I’ve said it before in my last response video to you - I think it’s dangerous to question people’s motives for purchasing specific cards. People bid and buy for lots of reasons - They don’t have to be big player collectors.
I bought a card for $300 and then got another of the exact same card a month later for $120. I dollar cost averaged them so that instead of having 1 for $300 I now had 2 for $420, or $210 per card. So that when I went and sold my other copy for about the $220, I was only into my one existing copy for $200.
As long as a bidder pays, I have no problem with price / value protection bids. As a buyer, yes I can see how that’s frustrating to put up with, but also consider things from the seller’s perspective for a minute. You have someone placing a large blanket bid on your rare card. You KNOW that the current high bid is maybe nowhere near the max blanket bid for that card. In theory, why shouldn’t a comp be the most someone is willing to pay for that card? That is, why shouldn’t that max blanket bid price be considered a comp for the card? The trouble is, no one but the bidder knows that number. If it were a BIN, the this wouldn’t be an issue. Blanket bids open yourself up for vulnerabilities in this way by their very structure. Would you prefer that blanket bids didn’t exist at all and the current bid price just jumped immediately to the max bid amount? Why shouldn’t that be the default format for auctions?
I would love to have a conversation or debate on this topic. Feel free to reach out to me on my channel.

so few folks understand dollar cost averaging… it’s a slippery slope, you don’t want to hit every branch on the way down, so it’s not without risk, but a valid strategy nonetheless

The sports card market is highly dependent on the 2ndary collector's market. Value is determined only what someone is willing to pay and money is actually exchanged.

If a card consistently sells for $500 for a year, then all of a sudden goes to $5k. I would highly question this as a buyer. It is very easy to get 20 or so popular people in the hobby to pump n dump. I recently bought a pop 3 card, where pwcc fanatics has the exact card for $2300 and i only paid less than $60 shipped. I dont have to have any card so badly, i will pay 5-50x its normal. I am a comp killer lol. I will send a message to the guy selling extremely high and ask if i can buy at the price i paid and they block me lol

😂😂😂you sound like my dad... "I'm a comp killer". The hobby needs beckett back, that way prices stay steady for a month at a time rather than changing daily, and we all get the same price point to work from rather than everyone picking and choosing what comps to go by.

(You unrelated to buying your own card topic) Intention of the buyer is irrelevant. If the buyer pays, end of story. Could be first copy, second copy, the millionth copy. The “next buyer” doesn’t HAVE to buy the next copy, if they don’t value it at the last comp, they shouldn’t buy it at the price. Not sure why we’re over complicating and making it a discussion.

I dont trust a soul in this hobby.....all will burn you for a dollar. Maybe not today....but they will

  • @NLMDOCUMENTARY
    @NLMDOCUMENTARY วันที่ผ่านมา

I think it’s perfectly fine to bid on a item you have even if the buyers intention is to prop up the price as long as the card is not theirs and they have the intention of buying it. Free market and there is nothing corrupt about it. What’s more interesting is your second conversation about whether we are in a bubble. I do agree the hobby is getting stronger, but I also think there is more and more rubbish people are spending money on. Other than numbered cards, a lot of base rookies will be worthless in 10 years time (Wemby, Godard, Trout). Even different prizms. Just because a prizm is numbered to 50 doesn’t make us forget there are like 72 variations of it (ex. Ja Morant RC). Regardless though, sports cards will always be a good way to invest in your money and have some fun. It doesn’t take up a lot of space (especially if you are only collecting worth singles) and now with the market being quite transparent I think prices will hold more steadily. One last point is I have several rare cards of Gretzky of the same type. I know there are two more out there and I will buy them at any costs to own them. With what you said I could be “price protecting” but no I just want em and It would be very scary if I was told I cannot do that simple because someone thought I was trying to protect the price of the cards that I already own. Not even sure if buying a card simply to protect price is morally wrong or not. I just see nothing wrong in that, as long as the buyer pays.

It is not illegal to corner the market or create a market by buying all the inventory. i own 9 of 13 psa 10s of a card. The difference is i am a pc person where everyone else is flipping. I dont advertise the card for sell or put it on ebay for 10k obo and i only paid $300 and waiting for some sucker. That is the main issue is a person buying a card and throws it on ebay for 20x what they paid for it. It is easy to look up most comps. What dummy is buying 20x of last sell?

My opinion about what something is worth is I value it at the top bid price below me because I just wanted it more. I'm not afraid of a card losing value on a card I own because same thing could be said of the dollar. Welcome to your channel Dustin.

The intention of the buyer is irrelevant, as long as they pay if they win. Their reasons for going after a card are none of your business. What about fixed-price listings? Should it be taboo to buy a card outright that you don't need but the price is too good to pass up?
Shill bidding is different. That's bidding on your own card with another account, or having a buddy bid on your card with the understanding they won't have to pay anything if they bid too high and win. That's totally different from bidding for a card you already own.
