Platelet-rich Plasma Treatment for Injured Tendons, Muscles and Joints

  • Dr. Brian C. Halpern, Sports Medicine Physician at Hospital for Special Surgery, discusses how platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections may help treat injured bone or soft tissue, such as a tendon or ligament. Produced from a person's own blood, PRP is a concentration of a type of cells called platelets which contain factors that are essential for healing tissues. PRP has been shown to help improve function in people with conditions such as chronic tendonitis, arthritis, tennis elbow, golfer elbow, rotator cuff tears and Achilles tendon injuries.
The PRP treatment process starts with a blood sample that is taken from a patient. The blood is put into a centrifuge to separate the PRP from the blood. After the PRP is treated, it is injected back into the patient's injured area of bone or soft tissue. Some patients who received a PRP injection experienced improved function and less pain within two to six weeks following treatment. Because PRP is created from a patient's own blood, it is considered a relatively low-risk treatment with the potential to improve or speed healing. Further studies are needed to prove the effectiveness of PRP treatment.

Hi may I ask, did you take a cbc test? Wherein the platelet count on your body reveals.
Do platelet count is a guideline for needing prp medicine?
And what imaging test the doctor did.
Is it ultrasound or another type of imaging test.
      Thank you

PRP is the real deal! Trust me! The reason why big pharma won't recommend it is because they're not selling any meds for this procedure to be done. All it's needed is your own blood and the problem is fixed! Had a severe ligament injury and was at the surgery door, gave PRP a try and in 3 weeks I was running pain free again, had two shots (every other week). Docs were saying surgery was the only option, and that would put me out for 6 months at least, not to mention financial costs, Just imagine... ! 🤦‍♂️ I recommend you to spend some time and do a decent search, you will surely find clinics doing it for less than $500, easily!

Leptin I hear you. I made good progress after 5 months. Finding a PT that specializes in shoulders is key. Definitely drove me mad too. I had a set back last week where I did something unaware. I’m going in for an MRI this week. Before imaging they think it’s inflamed and doesn’t take as long to get back but this requires the most patience I’ve EVER had to cultivate in my life. Mistakes are costly with temperament and all. I wish you the best. My PT creates a lot of research in the field for rotator cuffs and said strengthening creates the best results possible. Wishing you patience and to grieve what you’ve lost for now. You’re not broken though. Adjustments may need to be made but you can get the physique you want. We have to stay out of our ego and learn the exercises and to restrict and be patient in rehab. I believe in you. You can do it.
