Excellent video. Thanks for the effort you put in. But using an 24-to-18 pin adapter is totally fine. A 24-pin connector brings in voltages that man modern motherboard's don't use, so overkill for most boards. HP uses custom motherboards, and to keep cost and complexity down, it eliminates wasted pins. An adapter just grabs the pins/voltages that are needed, otherwise no difference at all. Using an 8-core/16 thread Xeon on this mobo will more than handle newer GPUs, even high-end ones. The only limitation is the power supply. I would recommend replacing the HP PSU with a brand-name 750 or more PSU. It won't fit perfectly but easy enough to mod the case and rough in. And yes, you will need to buy the 24-to-18 pin adapter. You can find a video on TH-cam showing how to install a standard PSU.
I recently purchased one for a $100. It has the 8 core CPU and 32 GB of ram, 600w PSU. I added a gtx980 for $75 and an old new stock Intel SSD I had. I installed Linux Nobara and it's running perfectly. Plays every game I play at ultra settings. Beautiful machine and fun to use. Plus I can run Python and do what I do when I'm not playing games. Normally, I use my old desktop running slackware 15 for programming but this thing runs circles around it.
recently got my z420 for $20. after checking the 600W PSU specs, G1 and G2 both can deliver 12V*18A = 216W. Plus the pcie 75W, you should be fine to drive a very capable graphics card. I use adapters driving my EVGA GTX1080 FTW with no problem.
The processor is known tested and working? Some motherboards prior to 2013 can maybe not support V2 Xeon processors. I got to know this after I made the video but in the comments many replied that.
I want to get the z420 and rx580 do u think that’s ok and I’m trying to stick with the original power supply? And I want to switch cases to a gaming case??
Hello there! The RX580 has a power consumption of max 185W. As you see in the video, the maximum power that is provided by the board and original power supply is 150W, so you're a little short... In cases of AAA games maybe there can be problems. Check if your power supply has two 6pin graphics connectors and let me know! Switching to a gaming case does not do anything. The original one is very nice and has tool less mountings and good airflow, so no need for a new case

There are molex to PCI-e adapters and that give you extra 132W (11 amps x 12V) using single molex or 264W if you use 2x molex to PIC-E 8pin. Yes of course, maybe you will be limited in hardware performance.
Cheap copies of Windows 7 are present on the market, I suggest at least that or a distro of Linux (Like UBUNTU)
Thanks so much for this video but please help me to know how i can make my graphics card work with this hp Z420 rx 570..whej i insert it into thr system, although it has 8 pin while the G2 has six and it doesn't come up what do i do to use it on my computer?
Did you use the 6 pin to 8 pin connector?
@@mattieniki not yet
@@myhdtvafrica7205 that's why it does not work, if you look again at the video you'll see that the 8 pin connector has 5 ground pins, the board surely does not have all the ground pins needed and the card does not power on
I have te same computer with x2 6 pines (12 pines total), can I use a RTX 3060 (170 Watts) ?
Yes, but only If you have a total consumption of the PC that allows it
@@mattieniki ok a think my computer can allow it, I currently use a GTX 1070 (150 watts) and power supply have 600 watts
could you overclock i cant on my system i dont know why
Ciao, video interessantissimo.
Ciao! ECC indeed works but HP says to use only "unbuffered". However, Registered ECC works also. For example, PC3-10600E (HP recommends) and PC3-10600R (supposed to work also).
i have a psu 500w bronze EVGA works with this motherboard? how much watts consuming it? i put a processor of 115w TDP
The PSU must have a 18 pin ATX connector, the max tdp of the LGA 2011 socket on the motherboard is 130W. I have not found a compatible PSU except the 600W HP OEM.
@@mattieniki th-cam.com/video/Mm6OnJMqydQ/w-d-xo.html this guy for example put one of 700w
and for the pin connector i search a adapter 24P to Motherboard 18Pin Power Supply ATX z420 in ebay
I do not recommend it because the HP motherboard are very sensitive to power adapters, on high watts loads you can have problems. Do it at your own risk
Still using it how's it going?
It's perfect, It handles all the modern titles at 1080p High preset including Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020
@@mattieniki can i use rx 570 in it?
@@triplefurious618 check the video for the requirements. If it follows the advices I gave then yes
@@mattieniki ok
What's better Dell t3600 or z420 ?
Not a Dell Expert, you should check the datasheet and the optionals list to compare the upgradability

bruh, can you use classic ram udimm non ecc on z420?
no
the Xeon processors that are compatible with the machine only support ECC.

Nice video but you are mistaken thinking that having one or two PCI-E 6 pin connector limits your GPU compatibility. There are molex to PCI-e adapters and that give you extra 132W (11 amps x 12V) using single molex or 264W if you use 2x molex to PIC-E 8pin. At the beginning when card that required extra power started to be available hardly any PSU had PCI-E 6 or 8 pin and those GPUs worked perfectly fine connected via adapters.

Hard limitation is your PSU 12V performance not the wiring
And second of all your CPU have unlocked multiplayer and allow overclocking
Bro temp of cpu is much high what can i do?
Hi, you can set the IDLE FANS on 3 or more in BIOS
si,ma è la tua vera voce questa? sembra una voce robotica
Beh certo, una voce robotica non farebbe errori di pronuncia!
mattieniki ... bravo cmnque ! davvero! ...
@@The-FoxWolf grazie!
Can this xeon be overclocked with this board?
As far as I know, no. Most OEM boards fail to allow that extra performance for free. Instead they and other large companies charge you for a whole new CPU
