Starker clearly has a lot of respect for this young cellist. Julian is doing an amazing job and Janos is focusing on such minuscule nuances. When a teacher gets into that much detail with you, they are working on that last one or two percent. Starker was such an incredible cellist and teacher.
Julian is obviously an excellent cellist.....I studied with Mr. Starker and if you think that you will impress him by playing so well, he will just chop you to pieces! Starker's brilliance comes from the musicial details in cello playing and that is what made him one of the greatest teachers of the past two centuries.

He just didn’t want to loose time, because first of all it’s expensive to have lessons, if you don’t have a scholarship and then they also don’t have so much time. He played it amazingly and Starker was very happy to listen to him and improving his approach. He respected Julian a lot!
Having attended two of Starker's master classes while I studied piano at Indiana University in 1978, I remember the intensity in the room most of all. This is such a close-up excerpt, and I can understand Maestro Starker's points and insights. Very interesting to see and hear! RIP Janos Starker.
I feel like I have to stick up for the student here. Masterclasses are very challenging because you often have to change your way of playing and practicing a piece after having memorized/practiced it countless times in your own style before meeting with a professional. He'll be working on it for a while, but what he says will stick with him after he can practice it, it's just not easy to play it right off the bat.
Doesn't matter if it is Julian Steckel. Yes Steckel is a fantastic cellist don't get me wrong, but this man worked with Kodaly on the piece himself. Listening to starker would be in the best interest for any cellist. RIP Maestro Starker

You don't have the whole picture. This is probably recorded after he performed it. If you are listening to what Starker is saying, he is talking about how he played before he plays for the first time in the video. So through critical thinking you can assume that Steckel has already played the peice for him. You would think that Starker would know how to teach a masterclass.
Well thanks for clearing that up, Alas I must say that starker is a brilliant man. Steckel maybe a rising star, but what I meant by my comment was that through the course of the video steckel seems uneasy.

XD when the student plays more beautiful than the teacher and the teacher can’t stand it and try’s to dominate with harshness .. no one really owns a piece and every composer or musician who composed something knows that. it should be just talking opinions on this level .

How you feel or how you think comes later, take the knowledge and improve. If you find that annoying, leave the room and let another who wants to learn take the lesson.

His method of teaching is almost militant and blunt but so clear and precise
