  • Seven hundred years ago, long before the invention of aircraft, cars and trains, a young man from Morocco, decided that he wanted to see the world. He hitchhiked from caravan to caravan to travel from his home city of Tangier, to present-day Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Turkey, Russia, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and onwards to Maldives, Bangladesh and all the way to China. He returned to his home after 24 years, only to prepare for his next adventure.
His narrations were chronicled by a scribe, under the command of the ruler of Fez. This book became an such an important source for historians and its being printed even today - 700 years later!
I went to see his final resting place in Tangier, to pay respects to this extraordinary man.
Spoiler alert: Since COVID-19, access to the mauselum itself is restricted.
