I am just working pretty light. Photoflex medium light stand with a Godox VL300 light (not boomed) and either a 48-inch or 60-inch Glow Ez Lock Octabox. Then I usually just use a lightweight five-in-one reflector. My priority is booming a mic so I can boom my cardioid mics overhead.
Hey man! Matthew here from the recent consultation I passed your way :) Appreciate your videos so much! This video was super helpful! It’s so hard to find good stand comparisons on TH-cam, thanks for uploading!
Thank you so much for passing on the client! We were able to use all the gear they already had to get an amazing look! Glade you enjoyed the video, I will try to get out more like it soon!
They might not have all the flash, but I know TH-cam really is lacking on some of these videos. Since it is not the latest cool tech, it gets lost pretty quick. Thank you for always supporting the channel!
@@PDMokry check gaffer and gear. They open as fast as a turtle base. And the legs lock; a bit less secure since the lock is by screw and friction plate from the sliding leg but still strong. Then as you lift the leg, there is an actual locking mechanism inside.
Thanks brother! It would be perfect for that use. When looking at a single stand with nothing for scale online, it is hard to understand how it relates to other similar stands. I have more ideas cooking!
Thank you so much! It seems I need to get us folks together for a meetup soon! Will wait until the high temps simmer off. All the comments and support keep me going.
I have Norms C-Stands that I bought many years ago. I have some Matthews Cs as well, I like them too. I have three Matthews Beefy Babys that serve as my main light stands when lighting with smaller Aputures (120D-300D), but I also have two Medium roller three risers that I use when I need to put lights up higher. I have a Norms Three Riser Combo stand that I use for larger lights that have Junior Pins. I have one American Beefy Baby (not sure what American calls it but it's the same size as the Matthews Beefy Baby) and I have to say, if I was starting from scratch today, I would buy all American steel. I'm in LA and when you talk with LA grips, they like Matthews but LOVE American, their stands tend to just be a bit more refined and rugged but they cost more. If you are starting from scratch guys, buy American Grip. Grip gear will last your entire career, it goes forever so buy quality when you can. A good tip with grip gear is to avoid Chinese stuff and Avenger is considered a bit second tier. Avenger makes some good stuff but overall, their fit, finish and refinement aren't as good as American, Norms, Modern and Matthews. I just acquired two ETC Source Four Jrs and I broke my own rule and bought an Impact spreader arm to hold two or three Source Fours and Impact baby pin receivers and I have to say, I know Impact is Chinesium but it's pretty decent for the money and it cost 1/4 of the Matthews spreader bar and so far, it's working well holding up two ETC Source Four Jrs. I figured it only has one moving part, a tie down knob so how bad could it be? So far, it’s fine, although I personally wouldn’t buy Impact stands.
It is so crazy to think, but those stands you picked up 5 years + ago are worth more used than you paid new. Grip gear will last forever as a non rental. Great insight on the American. I am Matthews because of the ability to buy in stock items via B&H in a pinch. But it is great to reach out direct, you can always get a deal. Thanks again for taking the time to comment, it is very helpful.
Gotta admit, I'm kinda jealous you have so much gear that it actually _can_ get cluttered. 😄 Awesome insights, I'm very excited to see the next episodes since even though I'm a camera operator mainly, I do geek out on grip and lighting gear, whatever makes a beautiful image.
Clutter is a big part of my life with so much gear! I am busting at the seams. Glad you can get something out of these videos. This was a test run and it already has my gears turning. Thank you for watching!
Heya, Love this little run through! I’m actually just looking to add a boom to my kit and not sure the D600 will be enough or if I should go for the D650.. purely based on the max payload of 15lbs / 7Kg of the D600 it would be enough but wondering what your real life use and experience says? Is the D600 at max extension and full load stable enough or is it better to stay a few LBS/KG under the max payload written on the box?
Great video! Thank you! What would you recommend using for a large diffuser? My cstands don’t seem to work well when dealing with wind issues 😕 even with a bunch of sandbags
What budget are you working with? What light and diff are you using? The digital baby is great, but has a lot of weight to it. But the spread on the legs will make it way better than a c-stand
I also have the baby digital, are the base an pipe size is the same as the digital combo? They look pretty similar to me in your video at leas base and pipe size.
@@PDMokry are your gear rates posted online? I’m in Montana so not in your market. I want to be getting a 1 ton grip van and offering grip+1ton+lighting add ons. It’s so practical and it’s also really fun, but the key is adding value to the client with a well organized and well stocked van with the experience to put it to good use.
Bro love your videos. Subscribed the other day. I’m an Arkansas (Bentonville) based gaffer/key grip and also owner operator of a two ton truck. Just got off a month long shoot the other day. If you’re in Arkansas hit me up would love to chat and check out your kit!
Thank you so much! I will have to take you up on that next time I'm up. I need to upgrade to a bigger setup to avoid the tetris game I play so often. Month long is great money, congrats!

Avenger combo stands for the win!
Neewer CStands I picked up a few years ago.
Kupo runaway base with 40" center stand.

Peter, these are my favorite type of videos. It's great to see you walk through gear I don't always get work with.

A cart overview video would be great to see. Keep making these great videos.
Cart video is a must! Thank you for always supporting the channel!
thank you for this
4th rewatch. More grip episodes!
Thanks for tip on the Avenger boom arm. Been looking for something for my LS60.
It is a great solution, you will love it!
All of your videos are helpfull! Dont stop making these.
Can't stop won't stop! Thanks so much!
Thank you for doing this video.
Thank you for watching! More to come!
I'll be in Dallas in a week. It will be my first time photographing in the city and I'm super excited! Amazing work here. Subscribing immediately!
Welcome to Dallas! Hope your time here is great!
“It’s really nice” lol 9:50 you should sell merch with that on it.
These videos are so great! Thank you for passing down all of this info!
Thanks for the support, more to come!
Thank you, Piotr!!! This helped a lot.
Great to hear! More to come!
Love it, That Joel guy lurking around, gotta watch him!
Such a creep! It was so nice to meetup, he is a great guy!
Try the Kupo sliding leg with quick release. You'll love it. The best and most versatile imo.
I will have to give them a try next time I see them!

Wow! This means a lot to me, never thought I could reach so many. Y'all are an awesome support system!
Great video. Really informative. Keep ‘em coming!

Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Another great video. It was great seeing all of the Mathew’s stands plus the low boy would be great for the bottom light for headshots.

Wow!
Thanks for the video I really loved.
Hopefully more of this to come on the channel!
Thank you for sharing! Keep Vloging! 🙏🙏
Will do! Thank you for the support!
thanks for sharing.
You are very welcome!
Perfect timing. I’m looking to get some beefier Matthews combo stands.
They are great and are able to be serviced.
Love your videos man! I’m local to the DFW area as well. Really appreciate the time and effort you put into this channel!

Ayeee big time love from Arkansas!
Thank you! I will be up that way in a couple weeks, be sure to prep everybody for my arrival! 😆

I have Matthews combos and Im thinking getting a few Digital Combo I know they kind of small but do they still feel heavy duty?
The all steel ones are very beefy and built like tanks.
I also have the baby digital, are the base an pipe size is the same as the digital combo? They look pretty similar to me in your video at leas base and pipe size.
What do you charge for you as gaffer plus your grip 1 ton for a day?
Currently in DFW gaffers charge $700-$800. My 1 Ton without lights is $450 + Milage.
