So I was working on a big project and when ever I didn't know how to do something I just googled it. I don't look at the channel name so by the end I was just like oh it's this kind magician again. You have made so many helpful videos. They are just the right length and very informative. Thank you for making them. You even made some relatively obscure video's that there were not many tutorials for. You have taught me a lot

I never regret reviewing the basics. I've been using layer masks for a few years now (basically all in the same manner, although certainly including the animation of the mask path, etc) and I hadn't even thought about using a layer mask ON another layer mask, and simply changing the mode to the opposite. So I appreciate that, sir :)

If your target layer selection is a Shape Layer, this doesn't work as expected. There is a workaround, rd_scripts shape to mask.
    1. Create a shape that will represent your new mask on the same layer with the tool as shown here, notice it doesn't work as expected, but instead creates a second shape.
    2. Run rd_scripts shape to mask with the new shape selected. If you're having trouble converting the shape, right click it and select "Convert to Bezeir path". After doing so, your second shape has become a mask for the first. You can then treat it just like you do any other mask, within a shape layer. :-)
I use this workaround for nifty looking feather masks on shapes, adds a dynamic opacity to them. This feathering trick for shape layers really spices up vector graphics to give them depth when you use feathering effectively.

This is exactly what I needed. Thank youuuuuuuu! I used the rotobrush method and then, I had this object that the roto brush kept including. I went through to take it out and didn't freeze panes and I'm starting over. I am in mask city trying to look at every next way I could better understand masks. Every video helps! Thanks!

Hey! Thanks for the tutorial! I have a problem with tonal and color correction in AE, and I was wondering if you could help me out. I I have a photo where I'm trying to change the tone, brightness and color of someone's eyes, hair and face, but it takes me ages to draw masks on each individual layer. Do you know if there's a quicker way to do it (by using alpha channels, for example?). Photoshop has this feature called 'Luminosity Masks' where you can separate the channel into lights, midtones and shadows and edit individual light, midtone and shadow channel of the photo (so you don't need to draw masks). Does AE have anything like that? Or is there a similar alternative?

Is there a way to automate rotoscoping? so that the mask is essentially following a certain set of points in the image (in this case the mask would follow the edge of the woman's face as she moves).
