Already saw a small wave of disappointed people in the TH-cam comments. Tall Tales are fine and all but I fear this one will be very short. Some players want more content for the overall game. Like me for example -> the ability to change the position of cannons in the ship. Maybe have one point backwards or forwards even and really make it so that you can encounter ships that completely defy your expectations. Or have at least an air of uncertainty. As it stands now SoThieves is too expectable, too predictable and too repetitive. New battle mechanics are needed.
Just re-played the first Jack Sparrow's tall tale and the whole Monkey Island Easter Egg is "hidden" behind a series of fetch quests like Falcore described in the video. Well done.
The developers at Rare were heavily inspired by playing Monkey Island back in the day as evident by all the easter eggs. I myself am super hyped- massive nostalgia I used to play the original as a kid in the mid-90s.
Crazy that I just realized the Sailors Grave Commendation Adventure for the literal Monkey Island reference in the Pirates Life tall tale, was a Monkey Island style adventure in Sea of Thieves. The mango explanation made it click!
I am only 15 but i remember my dad buying Monkey Island 1 for me and my brother. Since then The Monkey island series are one of my favorite Games + Sea of thieves also being one of my favourite games. After Playing Monkey Island 1,2,3 and the newest one for multiple times, i am really looking forward to this Crossover. Thanks Rare for letting this happen!!!
Yeah.. Curse is absolutely canon. In return to Monkey island Guybrush talk about it in his scrapbook. Plus Murray comes back ofc. I'd say the only big retcons are from Escape. But that one is largely still canon too
The Curse of Monkey Island is canon to the storyline and Return to Monkey Island doesn't ignore it "completely." Return to Monkey Island is set after the other games and features characters from that game!
What's really cool it seems that the sea of thieves devs seems to have built Melee Island in it's entirety in the game and for us old Monkey Island players the ability to explore the Island in first person is a very exciting prospect.
Yeah... reading the hidden journals during the Jack Sparrow event was awesome! Monkey Island was an awesome game. Sadly no one I was playing with at the time had a clue what was going on in those journals.
Played Monkey Island as a kid and loved it. Just a few months ago bought the editions available for Xbox and shared the experience with my gf and she absolutely loved the story. Really good old school fun and story telling.
Absolutely CANT wait!!! SOT is tugging at all the right heart strings! 1st, Pirates of the Carribbean, and now Secret of Monkey Island?!?!?!?? I couldn't possibly be more tickled. As one who grew up during the pinnacle of the point n click adventure games, this collab is a dream come true. Now I suppose the next collab will be some SOT take on Treasure Island in another year or so.......
Not to be that guy BUUUTTTT "Curse of Monkey Island" IS still considered Canon. The most recent game "Return to Monkey Island" features the story of Curse in the scrapbook and features Murray whom was first introduced during Cursed. Additionally, Ron Gilbert has said as such in interviews.
Secret of Monkey Island is my earliest gaming memory. Makes me happy to the point of heartbreak to know I’ll be walking the streets of melee island again.
the moment i saw the eater egg in the first pirates story. and heart the music of monkey island. i got tears hehe. and hoped that it meant a future monkey island update!!!! cant wait for it
When you do your recap of the Monkey Island series for the newcomers I beg of you to please include the at sea insult sword fighting bit from Curse of Monkey Island. More specifically, the 'The Pirate I was Meant to be' song that plays at the start of that chapter. It's one of the most memorable moments from the games after Ron Gilbert left after the second game. On a sidenote, I'm really glad they're deciding to pick up after Monkey Island 3. The first two games are classics and cannon, the 4th and 5th are surprisingly still very fun but the art styles aren't the best. 3 however, Curse of Monkey Island although it isn't cannon is actually seen as still partially canon and very much loved by the community. It was a great middleground for the artstyle and featured a fan favorite character Murray as well as Goodsoup hotel owner. They even brought back Murray for the new game! Absolute chad skull, really happy to see they used a different model for him too in the shot of him in the tavern and at the voodoo store. (Murray skull pet confirmed Pirate Emporium?!1?)
ALL Monkey Island games are canon. Take that from one of the biggest MI nerds and historians on the internet. When Ron Gilbert came back for Return to Monkey Island, there was an understanding that he was going to finish the franchise in a way that acknowledged the other installments, but that also 0:02 matched up with his "vision"... unfortunately, even after 30 years, he never grew out of his "metaphor" ending style, so... much like the ending of MI2: LeChuck's Revenge... he ended the franchise with another metaphor and went down the path of "the story was only as real as your imagination" ending. So since we know this takes place after Curse of Monkey Island, my hope is that it also takes place after Return to Monkey Island, which could also be true and it was worded the way it was to prevent offending Ron Gilbert, who has already been interviewed and is already pissed, claiming this crossover was done behind his back. Piss on Ron Gilbert... anyway, the fact that Guybrush has a full beard and he has never been able to grow one before (a significant story element) could be an indication that this crossover is now the final installment and will rewrite Gilbert's terrible franchise finale ending. I can only hope, or at the very least, give some kind of assurance that the Monkey Island universe didn't simply take place in a child's imagination...

I wasn't aware this was done behind Ron's back which kinda sucks, but the amount of effort you can see and care and attention to detail in the trailer alone does make me super happy. I wouldn't say I'm a diehard Monkey Island fan and I really disagree with everyone saying the ending of Return of Monkey Island was bad. If it were the true vision of Ron which matches the other endings so far it really can't be bad. Yeah you can dislike it but simply because an ending isn't to your liking doesn't mean it's bad. The world is inherently goofy with meta references and a perfect sense of self awareness. If there's one thing I don't like about this crossover it's the community. The Sea of Thieves community being cross because they want more Flameheart and SoT story, not more crossovers. And the Monkey Island community who I honestly think take a lot of things a little too serious and expect only the most serious lore from a goofy pirate game. Both aren't bad, but have an irritating side pretty much every community in existence has. In the end I'm just really happy to see these two amazing games collab and create a new story to experience. Including easter eggs, cool details, references, and a great representation of the worlds that are colliding. Not overanalyzing the story that already is left intentionally vague (this goes for both SoT and Monkey Island) So no hard feelings, I'm just looking forward to the tall tales and the references
I find my issue with the tall tales are the same with gold vaults, once you know it once the fun dries out. I always enjoyed monkey Island and even struggled for weeks getting past parts but I think they need staff from monkey isl or broken swords for try build new and original situations and help flesh out characters on islands

I get that SoT fans want to see their own content, but let's be real here... this crossover is so much bigger than anything SoT has done previously or could ever do in the future. A collaboration with the grand-daddy of all pirate adventures? Having the opportunity to wrap up the Monkey Island franchise in a meaningful way for fans who were disappointed with Return to Monkey Island? Simply put, the opportunity is too big to pass up. Most people view SoT as a failed multiplayer game with tons of expectations that never delivered. If Rare does this crossover right, they can forever be associated with one of the pioneers of adventure gaming and provide a meaningful conclusion to one of the greatest video game franchises in history. This is a pretty big deal. Just a shame most SoT fans are too young to appreciate this incredible moment in gaming history.
Yeah, I agree with you. I'd rather have the monthly release than all at once for the new content. Plus for me, it gives me something to look forward to besides my next appointment. Boy did you nail that Monkey Island gameplay loop. Haha good ol' moon logic. I am soooo excited for this content. One of my childhood favorites crossing over with my middle-age favorite that has meant a lot to me during my cancer recovery.
By the way, the first game of monkey island is on Xbox 360 as a arcade game and is backwards compatible. It a point and click game but I had fun with it
Yes that reminds me of the likes of Hugo’s House of Horrors which was a huge nostalgic trip for me when I remembered I couldn’t get past the dog as a 9 year old kid 😂

This is so fucking spot on as a player since the early 90's of monkey island before it was enhanced recently. It was on floppy and you had to print three paper code wheels, then rotate the symbols given to get one of the earliest 'cd keys' actually a floppy key to then wait hours to install across several floppy disks and then finally load it in dos/windows 3.1 Nostalgia and the reason I even bothered to mess with sea of thieves despite people begging me to and now having no one willing to play it with me 🤨
I just really really REALLY hope they learned their lessons from A Pirate's Life. One of the most absolutely disheartening aspects about those Tales was that it felt more like a Disney Ride than being there. The first episode was tremendous, it set me up to thinking I'd be able to go through all of them at my own pace, ALONE. Then the second one just obliterated all ideas of that. If my ship wasn't set on fire in the oceanic parking lot with every other ship on the server, it was all, "Let's swim down and, oh, there's a crew swimming up. Hi there!" Then you get to the sea floor and there's 10 other pirates swimming around at various points of the Tale, and it's all, "Oh, the crew ahead of us just went into the siren's grotto, so we have to wait until they get through before we open it for ourselves, otherwise everything will break. And, oh, there's a long line of pirates forming behind us, too! Ok, cool, they just got spat out at the ride exit over there, we can enter now." Beyond Episode 1, it never really felt like you were in A Pirate's Life, it just felt like a virtual simulation of a RIDE of A Pirate's Life, and it mostly sucked because of that. If there was EVER a time for a completely start-to-finish SOLO INSTANCE... THIS IS IT. Nothing will ruin this faster than having a line of people waiting outside the bar for their turn to go in, meanwhile some jerk at the docks is setting everyone's ships on fire or camping the spot where one of the critical items is and attacking people as they approach. I grew up on Monkey Island, and if they screw this one up by allowing everyone in at once and being able to ruin it for the others, I'm just going to quit and watch a TH-cam replay. Because the comedy in these games is about TIMING, and to me, that means it needs to be instanced for your crew, and not open to everyone.
@@itagamineko Have they officially released information confirming that???? Until they do, having it set in the SotD doesn't mean ANYTHING. The adventure "A Hunter's Cry" sent us back to Sea of the Damned... and it ended up in forced matchmaking with other crews, and it was an absolutely unmitigated DISASTER, IMO. It's another perfect example why this needs to be instanced content, and not open to the spawn-camping jerks that will abuse this for laughs otherwise.
Tall Tales and Adventures should have effectively been the same thing. This FOMO-approach to Adventures, where we get to do them for a few weeks and then they vanish, without any lasting impact on the world ... well, it's just silly. I know some people only play this game for the PVP, but being a pirate of legend is far more than just robbing other people's ships. This game pours a heavy amount of sea-based mythos and makes it real. The game *wants* to showcase the experience of sailing a mythical sea where magic and mystery and folk lore are all real. It's why events are clouds in the sky, it's why there are treasures, it's why the Kraken and the Megalodon exist, and its why curses, skeletons, ghosts, and all we love in the game exists. The PVE/story nature of the game deserves to be told, and Rare could start this off by making the adventures we've done across the game's history accessible.
What's up with that ship though that was next to the sloop that had that triangle sail? New ship type? New way to customize brigs/gallys? Or just one of the monkey islands ships specifically?
So once again we will have content that we play once and then completely forget about it seconds later. Definitely a smart model of investing time and resources for a development house.
I know it isn't great, but destiny 2 is a good example of the weekly quest stuff. Sure now its long term, people call it "drip feed content" but at least it does guarantee content each week regularly
@@Fitchy-ke3wz It's not just a matter of periodicity, it's that they spend time and resources on making content that is an end in itself and that will never be recycled in any way, leaving the base of the game always the same. How many times have you replayed Tales from A Pirate's Life? All the energy and resources put into making the content have been lost, and it's not because they all came out at once, but because it's content presented in a way that doesn't create recirculation or gameplay loops around it.
I always get sad when people say the series is so old, given the latest installment came out last year. And was a fantastic puzzle game. Yes, the first game in the series was released decades ago. But they are cult classics to gamers who enjoy point and click adventure games.
All I want is the ability to save like 5 outfits and be able to switch between them seamlessly. In a game so focused on cosmetics, it should be a thing!!! Please Rare!!!
Sorry, but it's not true that the 3rd game in the series Curse of Monkey Island is not canon, or that it is ignored completely in the most recent game. Just a heads up, all of the released Monkey Island games (including the Telltale Games developed Tales of Monkey Island) are mentioned in the series recap inside the latest game, Return to Monkey Island.
If it was a REAL pirate game, the tall tale would go something like “Larinna has the mango but won’t give it to you”. “Player shoots Larinna and receives 1 Mango”😂
You know. I put Sea of theives down some months ago, I'd had my fun but was ready to move on But now you give me some Monkey island and I'm thinking I'm back
Awesome collab! Remember my childhood, but Jesus... wait 1 month for every part of the story is too much!! Funny part is that there isn't that much content to play every time, so: players join, finish 1st part in around 2 hrs (with all commendations as well) and then wait 1 month to continue the story.... that's sad. It was supposed to be no more than 1 week and all together at once, then its up to the players how and when play the content. Rare disappointing again... I suppose I must play in October to fully enjoy this content all at once :(
do you think a new ship will be added because in the trailor it says "a big ship?" or something like that and then it points to a ship design we've never seen
a ship design we've never seen, BUT have seen something similar to it in the form of the flying dutchman! the overall shape seems similar. if the tall tales are involved enough, they might give it a starting menu option like a pirate's life, except that it actually starts you in the monkey island area, separate from the sea of thieves, and possibly opening the door to a larger crewed ship

This is far way different!! You have to wait a month for every part or the story. It isnt all at once like PoTC. So dont be that hype ;)

I just really really REALLY hope they learned their lessons from A Pirate's Life. One of the most absolutely disheartening aspects about those Tales was that it felt more like a Disney Ride than being there. The first episode was tremendous, it set me up to thinking I'd be able to go through all of them at my own pace, ALONE. Then the second one just obliterated all ideas of that. If my ship wasn't set on fire in the oceanic parking lot with every other ship on the server, it was all, "Let's swim down and, oh, there's a crew swimming up. Hi there!" Then you get to the sea floor and there's 10 other pirates swimming around at various points of the Tale, and it's all, "Oh, the crew ahead of us just went into the siren's grotto, so we have to wait until they get through before we open it for ourselves, otherwise everything will break. And, oh, there's a long line of pirates forming behind us, too! Ok, cool, they just got spat out at the ride exit over there, we can enter now."
Beyond Episode 1, it never really felt like you were in A Pirate's Life, it just felt like a virtual simulation of a RIDE of A Pirate's Life, and it mostly sucked because of that.
If there was EVER a time for a completely start-to-finish SOLO INSTANCE... THIS IS IT. Nothing will ruin this faster than having a line of people waiting outside the bar for their turn to go in, meanwhile some jerk at the docks is setting everyone's ships on fire or camping the spot where one of the critical items is and attacking people as they approach. I grew up on Monkey Island, and if they screw this one up by allowing everyone in at once and being able to ruin it for the others, I'm just going to quit and watch a TH-cam replay. Because the comedy in these games is about TIMING, and to me, that means it needs to be instanced for your crew, and not open to everyone.
it will take place in the sea of the damned, like episode 1 of pirates life. so there shouldnt be any other crews there with you

The adventure "A Hunter's Cry" sent us back to Sea of the Damned... and it ended up in forced matchmaking with other crews, and it was an absolutely unmitigated DISASTER, IMO. It's another perfect example why this needs to be instanced content, and not open to the spawn-camping jerks that will abuse this for laughs otherwise.
I'm So Excited To Jump Into Monkey Island For A New Adventure!
Tall Tales and Adventures should have effectively been the same thing. This FOMO-approach to Adventures, where we get to do them for a few weeks and then they vanish, without any lasting impact on the world ... well, it's just silly. I know some people only play this game for the PVP, but being a pirate of legend is far more than just robbing other people's ships. This game pours a heavy amount of sea-based mythos and makes it real. The game *wants* to showcase the experience of sailing a mythical sea where magic and mystery and folk lore are all real. It's why events are clouds in the sky, it's why there are treasures, it's why the Kraken and the Megalodon exist, and its why curses, skeletons, ghosts, and all we love in the game exists.
The PVE/story nature of the game deserves to be told, and Rare could start this off by making the adventures we've done across the game's history accessible.

So once again we will have content that we play once and then completely forget about it seconds later. Definitely a smart model of investing time and resources for a development house.
I know it isn't great, but destiny 2 is a good example of the weekly quest stuff. Sure now its long term, people call it "drip feed content" but at least it does guarantee content each week regularly
@@Fitchy-ke3wz It's not just a matter of periodicity, it's that they spend time and resources on making content that is an end in itself and that will never be recycled in any way, leaving the base of the game always the same. How many times have you replayed Tales from A Pirate's Life? All the energy and resources put into making the content have been lost, and it's not because they all came out at once, but because it's content presented in a way that doesn't create recirculation or gameplay loops around it.

I always get sad when people say the series is so old, given the latest installment came out last year. And was a fantastic puzzle game. Yes, the first game in the series was released decades ago. But they are cult classics to gamers who enjoy point and click adventure games.
All I want is the ability to save like 5 outfits and be able to switch between them seamlessly. In a game so focused on cosmetics, it should be a thing!!! Please Rare!!!

Just a heads up, all of the released Monkey Island games (including the Telltale Games developed Tales of Monkey Island) are mentioned in the series recap inside the latest game, Return to Monkey Island.

Awesome collab! Remember my childhood, but Jesus... wait 1 month for every part of the story is too much!! Funny part is that there isn't that much content to play every time, so: players join, finish 1st part in around 2 hrs (with all commendations as well) and then wait 1 month to continue the story.... that's sad. It was supposed to be no more than 1 week and all together at once, then its up to the players how and when play the content. Rare disappointing again... I suppose I must play in October to fully enjoy this content all at once :(

This is the closest to make a monkey island rpg (modern) kind of game
do you think a new ship will be added because in the trailor it says "a big ship?" or something like that and then it points to a ship design we've never seen
a ship design we've never seen, BUT have seen something similar to it in the form of the flying dutchman! the overall shape seems similar. if the tall tales are involved enough, they might give it a starting menu option like a pirate's life, except that it actually starts you in the monkey island area, separate from the sea of thieves, and possibly opening the door to a larger crewed ship
