My first memory of Clarence Thomas is of the Thomas Hill hearings and of my mother calling Anita Hill brave. I'm glad I had my mother to guide me. And I'm glad we had Hill to guide us. If only everyone had listened!

First as a soldier and officer, & later as a federal employee, I always remembered that I was a “public servant.” Hired, paid by, & accountable to the American taxpayer. The utter lack of accountability in the SCOTUS sickens me. I can’t believe we are paying for this.

I agree. For a Supreme Court Justice to come out with such childish nonsense is disconcerting. What does them "being friends for 25 years" have to do with not reporting the value of expensive gifts on your tax returns? Every year I do Along with 60,000 other employees 14 different Compliance Training courses, :- Company Ethics, Anti Fraud, Anti money Laundering , Workplace bullying, Government regulation compliance etc etc . A Supreme Court Justice of the USA ... "Asks around in the kitchen what the rules are about accepting gifts "? ! He would be FIRED ON THE SPOT in any Private company . Without any hesitation !!!! So I have to disclose not only any gift above a certain value, but also any gift to a direct family member, however this guy, in one of the most powerful positions in the US, doesn't think that a half of a million trip every year, among other things, should be at least disclosed? It seems that he doesn't understand why all the hush hush about this type of pocket money.

Sometimes I like to think back to when I started my doctorate in political science, I was excited to understand more about what is really going on and to help people see the nuance and why we needed to be more appreciative of the other side's points. I just had to do my employer's yearly required 15 minute "conflicts of interest" online training course & quiz. If a corporate peon like me has to be reminded every year that accepting any gifts from third parties that could even remotely be perceived as a bribe is forbidden, maybe the supreme court needs to be doing some yearly 15 minute training courses about legal ethics?
I don't know if this is true in all states but in my county teachers have to report gifts in excess of $50. Now, this rarely occurs from an individual family, but if families take up a collection to buy a classroom teacher a gift and it exceeds this amount there are forms required. Principals in my county are not allowed to accept ANY gifts from teachers, parents, or students. I once had a parent offer to put window tint on our computer lab windows b/c the afternoon sun was brutal and the district admin got wind of it and said it wasn't allowed b/c it would put us in a position of favoring his children for years to come.

An interesting addition to the TN story is that once a member has been expelled from the house they cannot be expelled again. Meaning that neither of the two can be expelled from the house for the rest of their time in it, including future elections I think.
