It all started with him not calling that handball inside the box from Ballack around min 7 and also Michael B not getting a second yellow for his dirty works and then the ref felt conditioned already to call mostly everything for Barça towards the end of the game and even so he sent Abidal off for a more than arguable foul as a last defender.
Min 7 handball by Ballck was off the ricochet, purely accidental, but still could have been called a penalty. The problem is, the referees review their mistakes during the recess, and often over compensates in the second half. The handball by Pique at 81 minute mark was 100 % intentional, as Beletti passed the ball to himself brilliantly to go around Pique to create one-on-one chance with the goalie Valdez, freezing Pique, forcing Pique to stop the ball with his hand. And the handball by Eto'o in the extended time was also 100 % intentional to block the shot on goal by Ballack. You can protect yourself by tucking the arms to your side / ribs, not by extending your arms above and away from your body. Yes, there were other calls that were missed or over called, but the handballs inside the box are critical because it leads to penalty shots. Ergo, it was a very unfair refereeing results to the Chelsea team that night.

When it is off a ricochet, it is vcertainly NOT intentional, and ref's most of the time do not call it a handball.
