  • There are a lot of premium sound formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. They all claim to have the best sound possible, but is this true? In this video I explain what Auro 3D surround sound is and why I believe it to be superior to Dolby's and DTS's surround sound formats. Hopefully at the end of this I will have answered the Auro 3D vs Dolby Atmos or Auro 3D vs DTSX questions for you.

Great summary. As a 35+ year audiophile, our family is addicted to listening to ANY source in immersive sound with Auro 3D selected using our McIntosh MX123 AV Processor. It's just that good over Atmos or DTS:X. Whether it's 2 channel audio being upmixed, movie watching, gaming, or hi resolution audio being streamed from Apple or Amazon music (even when encoded with Atmos), selecting the immersive audio format using Auro 3D is just jaw dropping.

Not with a 3.1 setup my friend. Auro 3D for immersive listening is the objective where you have a bed layer of speakers (such as 5.1 or 7.1) and a height layer of speakers (4 or more heights). We have a 7.6.2 system...Seven bed speakers; 6 height speakers; and 2 subs. Hope this helps.@@Airavida

Great video and also a good explanation! I'm from Europe (The Netherlands) and for me, Auro gives the most natural and lifelike sound because of the horizantel layers of speakers. Even an Atmos or dts:x soundtrack sounds better with an Auro setup. Keep up the great work!

That's not what I've found. Auro's height speaker placement just makes the sound taller. Their mono VOG speaker causes hot spotting as overhead pans only come from one small area of the ceiling. A good Dolby Atmos track with proper 3D objects is much more immersive.

DTS HD MA - IMAX infact uses multiple layers (more that 3). And this happens by combining and redirecting parts of the effects (3D object based sounds) in other speakers from 1st layer, so can place in 3D space even better and precise . So a thunder can be very far, while the helicopter is a little bit closer. Those effects are heard "outside" the room ( layer 1 not involved) , but the rain is poring on the ☔ nearby the listener meanwhile the three branches are heard closer that the chopper, but far than the umbrella (layer 1 involved)
In Aquaman, Mortal Engineer or 1000 faces of Dunjia (special this chinese movie) . Can be heard multiple layers. This applies even to layer 1, where sound are far, in the front, outside the room, some are more closer ( side speakers involved ) and other effects nearby me ( sides and rear-sides involved) . In Aquaman i swear i hear drops of water hitting the "marble" floor in my room in left, but the effect is lower in right where i have carpet.
7.1.2 IMAX Certificate sound system and Optoma 3D projector.
That's why exist IMAX sound systems also 8 lossless layer1 channels, and that's why it's so vital to have IMAX and 7.1.x 👍...

I imagine that they would sound comparable. I'm convinced proper accoustics is as important ( if not more important ) to an immersive sound than just adding a lot of speakers.

Auro3D is definitely not superior to a quality Dolby Atmos mix. Atmos, when encoded correctly and not a fixed print-out (I'm talking to YOU, Disney!), can expand to 24.1.10 discrete speaker positions. The only Auro product that can possibly compete with Atmos is AuroMAX, but that is not available in consumer products.

Hey Isaac. Long time lurker, first time commenter as they say. Sorry for the wall of text :D
I've never heard of Auro, and I'm not dismissing the system at all, but I'm interested in your input on a couple of things:
First, since most movies are not recorded/produced/aired in Auro, how can a theater with the Auro system ever give a better experience than a theater with the DTS or Atmos system that the movie's soundtrack is specifically coded to? The audio has been specifically designed to come from their respective hardware, so changing over to Auro just means it's a lot of conversion nonsense which cannot be an improvement. Just like up-scaling a DVD to 4K doesn't make it look any better, re-coding one sound system on the fly to output in another sound system can never produce perfect results. Sure, those four movies a year (or whatever) that are released in Auro can probably benefit, but for the rest of them this doesn't compute.
Second, you don't talk about the fact that both Dolby Atmos and DTS: X are generally 11.1/2 (or rather 7.1/2.4) systems, just like the Auro, so I fail to see how there's any more immersion. That Auro chooses to install their. +4s as wall mounted next to the ceiling, whereas Dolby and DTS choose to have them ceiling mounted is irrelevant.
Last and most importantly, you also don't talk about the fact that these systems aren't actually about the speakers, and they even work (just not as beautifully) on 5.1 systems. These systems are all about the sound profile - namely the key difference that sound is encoded as objects in 3D space, not as channels. So a point of sound that moves diagonally from the bottom right front up to the top left back will do so regardless of how many speakers there are (generally dozens, in theaters) or where exactly they're placed. :)
Incidentally, most all general theater speakers are wall mounted considerably higher than ear level (for obvious convenience reasons) with some 15-30° downward tilt, so in essence they are all "incorrectly" placed with regards to the puritan 7.1.4 or 11.1 setup. I've never been in an Auro theater, but I seriously doubt they've put their channels in ear level anymore than other theaters do, since that requires building bigger rooms and usually a lot of wasted space that could be better spent on more seats.
If they do indeed do that, I can accept that there is fractionally better immersion, but that simply comes from the speaker placement, rather than the sound system behind it, and could be achieved in the same way by "properly" placing the 4/6 main channels of Dolby/DTS at ear level :)

      Hi, Arni,
Great questions. I’m going to try and answer in the best way I can so please do not take the answers as condescending. I looked some stuff up for you not to say that I’m right and you’re wrong but simply to show you how I came upon my conclusions in addition to my own experiences with Auro.
      1) Most movies are NOT recorded in surround per the previous persons comment. There are only a couple of microphones kept on sets with almost all audio for surround sound formats added afterward. Same with Auro. The movie is sent to the Auro labs with the encoded 5.1 track from the movie studio. From there the sound engineers at Auro will add the appropriate amount of audio to make it suitable for Auro 3D. Begin watching at the 19-minute mark where Wilfred himself tells a bit of how they do this process
      th-cam.com/video/6RjP-TDMxjA/w-d-xo.html
      2) Since I’ve never worked at Auro I can’t tell you the specifics of how exactly the sound conversion works through Auro Matics. I was skeptical at first, but when I looked up user videos on TH-cam and various other forums I found there are quite a few people that believe in the conversion from DTS/Dolby to Auro sounding better.
      3) Not sure where you’re getting that DTS:X or Dolby Atmos are typically 11.1 etc. Even on Dolby speaker setup guide they don’t show this. There highest configuration is a 9.1.6 with the 9 speakers at ear level and the six directly above the viewers, creating a sound gap.
      www.dolby.com/us/en/guide/speaker-setup/index.html
      www.dolby.com/us/en/technologies/cinema/dolby-atmos.html
This is not to say Atmos or X are bad. They are of course a great step forward in sound, just not as good as Auro 3D in my experience. While DTS claims “DTS:X doesn’t require any specific speaker layout, you can arrange your home theater system however you want” you and I both know they’re like Dolby. Speakers at ear level and on the ceiling. Again, creating a sound gap unlike Auro. dts.com/dtsx
      4) You say “a point of sound that moves diagonally from the bottom right front up to the top left back will do so regardless of how many speakers there are or where exactly they're placed.” This is true to an extent. Yes, the sound will still happen but it’s the sound reflections inside your ear that can tell if is sounds like its on the Z axis versus the X and Y. By the logic of your statement I could use 4.0 speakers and still hear a sound moving from the back left to top right from the simple fact that the sound effect is moving left to right and some tricks can be done to make the audio louder or quieter to mimic the effect of the moving object.
      5) You are correct in assuming that Auro doesn’t put their speakers at ear level. However, the first layer is lowered to allow space for the first height layer. Check out this photo of a theater that has it equipped (with the lights on! Was so hard to find a picture with the lights on for you.)
      www.digitalavmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/auro-11_1-3.jpg
Versus AMC’s Dolby Cinema which as the speakers far too high on the sides
      www.horsingaroundinla.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Dolby-Cinema-at-AMC-Prime-Screen.jpeg
      6) In my opinion DTS and Dolby can’t even touch the same level of immersion as Auro can. However, that’s my opinion. You are correct in saying that it’s really about having more speakers and not the sound system itself. True, however, as I stated in the video, Dolby and DTS cheat you by not having that in between layer of audio and branding themselves as “the best” audio in immersion. Auro simply includes that extra layer of sound making it sound better. The Auro inventor simply created something other hadn’t thought of and the result is awesome.
Please do keep in mind my videos are not designed to be the end all in answering all the questions people have. I simply find a few things I think most people will find of interest and push that info out. I’ve come to find people hate long videos on TH-cam, so I try to cram as much as a I can into each of these educational ones. I’ve spent a lot of time in ignorance when it comes to the movie industry and my aim is to arm people with some knowledge quick and easy versus doing tons of Google and TH-cam searches like I’ve done over the years. I even cut some stuff out in the editing process for the sake of time (really, peoples attention time span).
I hope this helps clear things up and I hope you continue to stay and ‘lurk’ around as my channel grows. I appreciate the comment! =D
      -Isaac

It is very interesting about everything that you are asking, but simply put wouldn't it be easier just to listen to Auro3D and get your impression from there. I got an Atmos receiver where it first hit the street, set up my family room for it. Heard about Auro3D a few years ago, thought it was worth checking it out. Bought an Auro3D receiver, went out on a limb and changed my speaker layout for Auro3D and comes to find out it outranks Atmos. My whole collection of movies are now being played with Auro3D upmixing and everyone who hears any movie, TV show, sports events on my system is blown away. Check it out it will blow you away too.

      @@MovieUniversity Agreed.... However,
If you wish to experience the full compliment of Auro 3D at the home, you need a minimum of 12 ft ceiling height..... This will allow you to set a comfortable distance between speaker layers based on your setup...
      1. Seating distance from the screen, side walls and rear.
      2. Seating layers by rows... Make the adjust to the speakers based on the listening position for that row....
