      This is is being refurbished at a friend's studio now. I think he's going to end up using it for his mobile recording setup. I just ended up with too many consoles. I let this and Topaz go last month unfortunately. The System 8 is a really good sounding console. It has a nice sound and the preamps are discreet. Maybe someday I'll find a 24 channel version.

      I'd love to have a 24 channel System 8. They sound really good. I've almost bought one a few times but they sold before I could get them.

    I’m looking for a console, with a bit of vibe, at least 16 channels, direct outs, phantom power, switchable line / mic in. Do you think this might fit the bill, or are you aware of anything similar? was looking at the Tasman m series but I don’t believe they have direct outs without mods. Thanks, Alex

      The vintage A&H consoles like System 8 sounds very good and have a lot of vintage vibe. The only issue with these is the maintenance due to the age of the consoles. They are also not modular and have bus bars to connect all the channels and the master section which makes them very difficult to work on if they need restoration or repair. Tascam consoles usually sound very good as well but are not necessarily very vintage sounding although that depends on the model. Some of the older consoles with transformer balanced mic inputs do have a more vintage sound than the more modern consoles that Tascam made. The great thing about Tascam consoles is the reliability. I'm selling my M35 on Reverb currently as I don't use it as much as I used to.

      @@TwinCreekAudio thanks for your detailed reply, as someone with limited electrical knowledge I imagine the system 8 might become a burden in this case ( although I imagine this is the case with most vintage consoles) however ease of repair would be a benefit. I would be interested in the tascam you are selling but I’m in the UK and I believe you are US biased?

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I'm in the United States. If you are in the UK, you should be able to find a lot of different vintage mixers as the best consoles in the world are made in the UK. My favorite consoles that were made in the UK that are not overpriced are Saoundtracs and Soundcraft. You might look for a Jade or a quart or even a topaz although those are not modular and the other models are. Personally I run a Soundcraft Sapphyre which is an amazing sounding console and has been very reliable. I would look for a console that was designed for recording specifically and made in the UK. Those are going to be the best type of console for Studio use and most of them are extremely reliable and modular making service easier.

    Very insightful! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Do you know if the direct outs are balanced or unbalanced on the System 8?

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am pretty sure they are unbalanced. Most connections on the console are except the group and master outs. As long as the cable run isn't long, it shouldn't be an issue sound wise.

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a MK II and the direct outs are post EQ, post fader on this model. Really good preamps and EQ on this console.

      @@Tobes1100 The MK I has shorter 60mm faders and direct outputs were optional and not all had them until the MK II. They are both the same color while the MK III is a grayish blue color. They are all good consoles but the MK II and MK III have more features. Thanks! I'm you're enjoying the videos. I am working on the tape machine videos next and more mixing and console videos soon.

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This one does. It the 828 FireWire so it needs a FireWire card or connection. FireWire is kind of outdated now but many good interfaces use it and they are usually pretty cheap!

    do you know of a way to assign the Vu meters to the individual channels?

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you’d have to actually mod the console for that. They only show the subgroup and master levels. There aren’t any switches for the meters or any option like that stock. These were made way back when most small studios were 8 track and most users used the subgroups to feed the tape machine.

    Can u tell me what kinda cord this uses I have one but Doesn't have a power cord

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will need more than a power cord. It’s needs a 15V external power supply. Studio Systems UK can build one for you. They make Blue Dog power supplies. Otherwise something like an Acopian linear power supply. Mine came with a replacement power supply that says American Power Systems. I would check Studio Systems UK or Creation Audio labs in Nashville for one that’s ready to go and will definitely work with the System 8. You can get almost any power supply and the Pinout for the power connector on the console is in the manual. I have the manual. Go to my web site and send me a message if you can’t find the manual or power input pinout online.
