We moved to Hawaii at the start of my sophmore year in high school. (Castle HS in Kaneohe) I grew up in rural Idaho eating potatoes, corn, green beans, elk, etc. We went out to eat at achinese restaurant and the variety of new flavors blew my mind. I thought an angel had come to earth and cooked us dinner. Sweet and sour was fabulous.

I would have the same reaction to eating elk tbh...I don't think it's even available in Australia.

Aloha, I grew up on the Leeward side of Oahu & in San Diego. I raised all of my children on the mainland. I cook lots of Hawai'ian foods for my keiki. I even made easy cookbooks for them to have when they moved out so that they will have the recipes to pass on to my Mo'opunas. It was great watching you try these Hawai'ian treats with your dad.
    Lots of Aloha, Auntie Ka'imi

Macadamias were first grown commercially in Hawaii but it's a native of south-east Queensland in Australia, where I live and where the climate is similar. Also, the Chinese population of Papua New Guinea, just to Australia's north, had what we called 'salty plums', which were dried and heavily salted plums. I loved them! Also, those wet dried plums look like what we call 'prunes' in Australia. We can also buy bottled prune juice here. It's great for what ails ya! 😉.

In the west of Ireland Nori is called Sleabhcán. It grows in thin strips on the rocks and harvested at low tide. It looks like the old cassette tape. We stew it fresh or dry it, and store in air tight containers. We use it as a condiment and add to fish dishes and to soups. Flakes are fantastic in carrot cakes.

You should be very proud as you as the oldest make decisions every day that encourage and inspire your younger siblings; kids who aren't showered with love and respect from their older siblings will never shine the way your "littles do. Super job, Sis!

I love Spam musubi. So neat to see you exposing your kids to foods normally not found easily! My wife is Japanese and her cousins in Hawaii turned us on to this delight years ago! Rice, teriyaki sauce, Spam, slicy cream sauce, rice wrapped in toasted seaweed is how we make it.
A couple of years ago, Hibachi-san at the mall in Chandler, AZ started making it, but their Spam slice is a little thin..

Spam used to be manufactured in the North West of England (just outside Liverpool) and was a staple on school menus, usually served in the forma of a Spam Fritter, battered and deep fired. Some Fish & Chip shops still sell Spam Fritters. And finally don't forget the Spam song, th-cam.com/video/mBcY3W5WgNU/w-d-xo.html.

i still love mango i had a second fridge out in my garage where i use to harvest my mango trees and throw the fruit in the freezer and eat them like ice cream. i still love all the juices. was on oahu hawaii and got to visit kahoolawe which was a bombing range and gunnery range when i was there. i actually drove my little datsun around the entire island of oahu including the rather rocky road going from yokohama beach to the north shore side. this was back in the late 60 s to 1973. i actually was on the uss enterprise for a tour in 73

one thing that was different when i was renting a house in waipahu was there was no heating or cooling. the windows were mostly solid glass with louvres under the windows to open or close to adjust the temperature. used to call me the crazy howley cause i acted more hawaiian than i did white. i kind of melted into my environment. had a great time and being a diver in the service i fit right in to the many water sports. but be careful playing rugby against the samoans was a very physical game but i loved it. a scrum is not a scrum until you play the samoans. its like a hidden fist fight lol

Nevaeh, I was combing your page for your music...specifically looking for a 'music playlist' that I could play while resting and I stumbled on this. Fabulous. I was thinking of sending the same for the same reason of your dad sharing his childhood snackies and stories. Short story: when I met my husband (who's from Calif) we went to a hotel with plans to have dinner with non-local friends. Our friends were to meet us at our hotel room so we left the door open. I wanted to introduce my then boyfriend of my childhood snackies...much like what you had here. So, we're sitting on the bed with all the goodies scattered...I'm telling him what they are....yada yada....cuttlefish and other stinkies....our friends find the room, and stop at the doorway....their faces told the story. You could read the bubble above their heads "WHAT IS THAT STINKY SMELL....". Funny moment. Good stuff, tho. Spam musubi rocks. Tell dad to make you folks a BLT musubi with mayo or even a poached chicken breast and namasu musubi...also with mayo.....mayo on everything... LOL.

I'm Native American so yeah, I LOVE SPAM! I especially love spam when it's diced up and cooked with scrambled eggs and homemade tortillas! OMR! That's the best! We make spam, eggs and potato burritos and they are a huge hit in Indian Country (Native American)! I went to college with a couple of gals from Hawaii who also loved spam. They would stock up on spam and ship them home as spam was cheaper in the non-Hawaii states.

Great memories as I too have had experienced Hawaiian assorted food living in Waimanalo, Oahu as a child when dad was stationed in the millitary. If i recall the misubi also had "ume" ( picked plum), daikon (pickled radish), along with fried spam. I recall my friends inviting me to a "pot luck" & feasting on chicken long rice, Lau Lau, lomi salmon, pipikaula ( beef jerkey), smoked marlin sword fish marinated in teriyaki sauce, poki in assortment ( my favorite were "ahi" & "tako") .....and among other recipes at the moment I am trying to remember as I reflect 🤔. Whew thank you for reminiscing my memories!!!! Great video 😃👍!!

We used to have spam fritters in my boarding school days in the UK, which is essentially, spam dipped in batter and fried. We also had a spam loaf, which is the spam grated, then mixed with egg and whatever spices or herbs you fancy and then baked in a small baking form. All cheap and cheerful food, but we loved it, I still make the loaf now and again these days. I never knew that they ate spam also in Hawaii, I like the way you guys made it, I will have to give that a go, albeit, I need some convincing with the seaweed aspect :-)

    Aloha, Braddah!
Today is the first time I saw your channel with the toy drive for the pediatric cancer patients. I cried and cried and fell in love with your Ohana!!
I instantly knew daddy was not only from Hawaii, but probably from the Big Island. You still got the aloha!
We live on the Hamakua Coast in O’okala. We send aloha to you and yours.
Nice job on your channel, subscribing to both!
    Me ke aloha pumehana.

I tried Finnish Christmas casseroles last year for first time and is good to do ancestry food. Tried Lithuania Baltic recipes too , super refined imo. . . along with Hungarian dishes. Its hard to explain to kids but usually taste better if get connection between little work to get the food, more leisure time. Also food used to celebrate the friendship of particular region "microclimate"
its life and personality, joy in its beauty colors scents
listening to land water air needs.
Think for Idaho may help to find other countries at similar latitudes and their recipes.
Still good to let Hawaii visit Idaho as I feel lands like to go on vacation too, they just dont hop on boat or travel visibly. Fusion home decoration, or plants like in sunken greenhouse fun, neat to grow plumeria there imo.
Love to see mom's food ancestry Canada? maybe help picky eater with traditional stories about land and food and water. Lots of rivers have fish from ocean like salmon and eels and love both river and ocean as part of their experiences,
life.. .neat to celebrate ocean kelp and the fish they eat from it. Watch Octopus Teacher on Netflix, Set in South Africa
Shows a cool moment of octopus "dancing" celebrating "art" "music" neatness of rare visit by a unique school of fish in her kelp forest. Sort of sacred as close to end of her life, imo gift to octopus work being good.
