One of the most fascinating things about the production of this film is that Brazil was actually going through a violent dictatorship when the movie was shot and released.
I'm a wide admirer of Babenco, a great director, and I've always been obsessed with Sonia Braga, the greatest Brazilian cinema Diva of all time. It's also worth seeing the last two films starring her, Aquarius and Bacurau, excellent movies with queer characters, especially Bacurau.

I'm not sure I've actually watched any other Babenco films. Fault in my education ahah

That's a really nice review. I'm old enough to recall when it came out in theaters and reading the reviews. Sometimes I wish the directors had enough money to do a movie both ways. I haven't seen this movie, but to make it with William Hurt and Raul Julia switching roles would be great, as a companion piece. I imagine how it would be if two directors and editors could direct the same screenplay for a short film, use the same actors, and see how the differences.

I have those kinds of thought experiments really often actually. How films might've looked and felt had you changed even minor things in production. Really fun to think about
