Why there’s sometime the word “en” in front of verb like in “Est-il en retard» while there’s sometimes not.

Great question! ☺️ In French, “en” is often used to form expressions, but whether you need it depends on the specific phrase or verb.
“En retard” is a set phrase that means “late”. The “en” is essential because it’s part of the fixed expression, and without it, the meaning changes. "Est-il retard" wouldn’t make sense.On the other hand, not all adjectives or phrases require “en.” For example, “Est-il fatigué ?” (Is he tired?) doesn’t need “en” because “fatigué” is just a regular adjective, not part of a set expression.
Think of “en retard” as similar to English expressions like “in trouble” - it’s just how the phrase works!
