I stopped sharing anything anywhere on social media some time ago. It's such an ego check too. And it's such a relief and shockingly I got my love for art back then, when I know I do it only for myself. I do show some of my stuff to some people - I do art stuff for work after all, but there is no more burden of other people. I highly recommend it.
14:09 I also started printing my references, I got one of those printers with ink tanks, 6 colors and the cheapest photo paper in bulk and I print everything I need, so I don't need the screens.

That's sounds so great and healthy! 🩵 I love your perspective on this, and absolutely agree! (plus, great tip on printing refs)

It took so much pressure off my shoulders when I stopped going on DeviantArt. I wasn't letting myself enjoy art anymore when I found myself silently competing with others who posted almost everyday.
Funny how I starting loving art again when that stress and pressure of social media went away!

I want to show people my story to help them, to make them feel less alone. But when you asked the question I felt oddly relieved. I guess showing my art to others were just a bonus, art has always been just an escape for me.

I bought a ten dollar sketchbook from target recently (july 26 to be exact) to just sketch and doodle for myself. I have expensive sketchbooks that the pressure got too much for me. This paper is incredibly good despite the price like i am amazed at how well it works for cheap paper. (Mondo LLama 8x11 hardcover if curious). But since buying it and drawing in it I’ve been slowly falling in love again, not sharing everything and almost using it like a diary/ journal. it feels refreshing, and I don’t post too much anymore except on bluesky. I like the interactions i get there.

I’ve decided not to post my art online for a full year so I can make sure the response is not a factor in my process as I find I am rushing to finish, posting things I’m not super proud of, and then becoming discouraged from the lack of response.
Ironically I am a wonderful artist when I’m not trying to create art for social media, so I’ve just realized I need to separate the two for my mental health.

I had a whole 1½ years where i wasn't drawing anything because i wondered if i have to show everything everyday so that i achieve my dreams of being a good book illustrator, animator and painter. Then i bought some sketchbooks and just drew whatever ideas i had and noticed the paralysis went away. And i actually came up with some pretty good ideas at that time that I've started working on as complete works
I also stopped trying to see this as 'I have to share every good work as soon as i finish' and began seeing it as, I'll take my time off to draw and paint and see if i get good ones by the end of the year. THEN I'll work out showing them online. I haven't really gotten any jobs in line with what i want, and the overwhelming thought of having to get things pretty and right for social media comes back every now and then, but i am reminding myself to be as i was when i discovered i love doing art. I'm also trying to get out more and draw from life. And just not think too much when i decide i have an idea i want to try out. Building my portfolio slowly, telling beautiful stories and having a peaceful time as i go along👍✨️
I also noticed that communities help with getting work out there, getting tips and advice and friends in the same field...so i wonder if anyone knows any good artist communities? I'm mostly on IG but if it's a good one on another app then i can get it.🤷‍♀️

I think this counts even for artists who have never posted anything! Even without having posted anything on social media I still feel this need to be “good”, “better”, etc. I’m trying to get back into my childhood mindset of just drawing for myself! 😊

I feel like drawing for yourself is so fun. I recently started having to draw a little bit more realistic for a job I’m doing, and it’s really pushed me to study everyday life objects a whole lot more and I’ve found that in my free time I just like drawing ❤

My best paintings I don't even have photos of, I just did them out of love as gifts. They are lost since many of the people I loved aren't in my life anymore and took them with them.
The other best ones are done in warm days in a quiet place, allowing myself to experiment and make mistakes. To be happy is simply to create!
Capitalism promotes intense productivity, fast-paced entertainment and quantity over quality. All of those characteristics go against the process of making quality art that makes the artist happy and content. It is our duty as a community and individuals to preserve the process and happiness of art. It is one of the most human and natural forms of expression!

I'm only 30 seconds in and my immediate answer before you said it was relief. I'm always trying to get back to a place where I didn't care what people thought, but I think I lost that a bit when I started letting coworkers follow me on socials. I'm trying to be more free and less restrictive. I used to do a lot of horror and some nudity and fantastical cosmic stuff and just shared doodles from margins in notebooks during college lectures and i didn't put a ton of pressure on myself
I just dont anymore for fear of idk it doesn't really matter I'm going to draw concepts I like again
side note: I've been using The Borgias dresses as inspo on pinterest so I totally spotted 13:06 and got excited

Yes, I totally relate to that! 🩵 I used to doodle a lot during college classes too. It was a different feeling I miss as well... I think we should really try to get that back and draw whatever we just feel like

I wish I could draw what I like or want .I'm a 13 year old beginner artist and I have to be careful of what I draw and I can't draw or do things beginners do like. My parents don't understand that art is my passion. It's kinda hard to draw for myself.
