  • Mother Cardinals have the most difficult easy job imaginable: not only to feed her babies but to be alert every moment. Predators abound. It's not a Disney world out there.

      I was sad to find the nestlings gone on day 5--couldn't believe it, in fact. I'm glad you liked the movie despite the ending. I do have others about Cardinals (how the females pick a mate) and other nesting birds (Robins, Phoebes, Blue-Gray Gnatcatchers).

    Your videos are all simply so amazing. I guess it really helps if as a viewer you really love animals in general and your wife and daughter are active birders, but there are so many videos on birds and animals and your's stand out from the rest in a really positive way and I just love how you do them. Offering them a basket to nest and seemed like a good idea at the time, but now I’m not so sure. It’s possible that the reason the nestlings were taken at the basket was in a spot wasn’t well hidden enough. I guess the only advice I’d offer is to hang the basket where it’s protected by shrubbery.

    I love this video. A robin made a nest in my apple tree. The mom was so diligent and sat on her nest of beautiful blue eggs around the clock. Then a few days before they were due to hatch, the nest was bare. I looked at my trail camera and saw a big dark shadow of a bird gobbling them up as mom robin tried in vain to scare him away. I once was waiting in line at a park in NYC for a concert, a hawk swooped into a nest right above our heads and ate the babies, the parents were going crazy but couldn't do anything to stop it. Seeing this first hand really pulls on the heart strings but in reality so many of our actions are killing birds and other wildlife in much greater numbers due to loss of habitat. We started getting our property on track to be much more earth friendly even if there's some "weeds" that are to another being dinner.

      @JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, Rob, I do so agree with what you say about us being the cause of bird population declines! I call those moments when a predator kills something National Geo moments, and they can be hard to witness, but we are the culprits. Whenever someone gets on my channel and rails about Starlings telling me I ought to be shooting them, I point out that we're non-natives to this continent too, and compared to what we do the damage those Starlings do to native species is less than a drop in the bucket. Pesticides, loss of habitat, and climate change are the big three.

      @@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME We're definitely on the same page, as much as I enjoy colorful, pretty or rare birds all birds are welcome in my backyard. I don't like to kill anything, not with pesticides or traps or what I eat at dinner. I wish more people saw the big picture and understood what truly destroys biodiversity and our planet rather than focus on horrific pictures of a baby seal being killed. I agree that's also terrible but so are factory farms, needless development and just so much of our way of living. And I say that even though I agree with your sentiments. I do eat meat if it's not grain fed or raised in a CAFO. I buy organic if I can. But even though I try to be sensible about what foods are healthiest for me and least damaging to the environment, I'm still part of the problem: too many humans. I'm not willing to sacrifice myself for the good of the planet, though, and give the Coronavirus a chance to kill me and my husband. We're sheltering in place, but we're still using gas and heating and cooling our house. Yes, we feed the birds and plant only native plants, but we're still contributing to climate change. 🤷‍♀️

    This seems to be a very exposed location for a nest. Looks like a hanging plant bucket or something. Maybe that's why the nestlings died or predated on so easily, whereas if the nest was in dense foliath on a tree somewhere they may have had a better chance.

      I noticed the little nest platform in the video.
      Is it covered at all or what?
      I have a few feeders I tend to several times a week and I was thinking it was time to build some bird condos.

      My husband is the one in our family who feeds the birds--and knows more about them than I do--but aside from hanging a few store-bought birdhouses in the woods behind our house, he doesn't know much. The nest the Cardinals occupied was a former orchid holder that he hung in a pergola. Though I can't give you tips on the condos, I can offer something just as useful, I think. Relying on my husband's expertise at attracting birds to our yard, I made two films about how to get them to show up in the winter. I'll bet you'd be very interested in both of them. I'm posting a link here to the first of them, and you'll find a link to the second one at the end of this one. th-cam.com/video/16eEu0J6n6Q/w-d-xo.html

      +Conner Castro Not having worked with a gopro, Conner, I can't offer you any advice. When I want to film a feeder, I just set the camcorder up on a tripod, leave it alone for an hour or two, and then scrub through the footage. That's how I got the footage for "Why Birds Bathe" (with the camera set up on a stream bed rather than a feeder). In the Cardinal movie, I did the same thing. Since I didn't want to disturb the birds, I spent as little time as possible setting up the camera and changing memory cards. I'm glad to hear you like the results. If filming wildlife is a hobby you plan to pursue very much, I'd suggest you look at more of my films for ideas.

    Perhaps the hanging nest cradle is not in an optimal spot. Are the cardinals reusing the cradle? A pair of cardinals are building a nest inside a thuja shrub right by my windows. I’ve noticed a house sparrow couple coming around harassing the mama cardinal as she was carrying materials to make a nest. When they left, she flew up into a hemlock branch and called papa cardinal. She called about 3-4 times and then he appeared. They touched beaks, either to eat or another reason and then she continued building the nest while he stood guard above.
    Shortly after that I was outside and there was a loud bluejay fracas. I went over to the area of the cardinal nest and saw the 2 house sparrows nearby again. I chased the h sparrows away.

    • @JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME
      @JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We didn't hang that orchid container there for them to nest in, and it wasn't a great spot--not camouflaged enough. I'm not aware that House Sparrows will eat the eggs or chicks of other birds, but Bluejays will. Maybe you should save your energy for the jays?

    People: P L E A S E, KEEP YOUR OUTDOOR CAT INSIDE! Especially during spring to protect our bird population. The cardinals are in decline. Our neighbor jokes about what his cat brings him as “gifts”. It ain’t funny! I am waiting for him to say something about it to me. I’ll ask him how funny would it be for my Dog to bring his lifeless cat to me as a “gift”? Sign, a Bird Watcher & Lover.
    We had 3 baby cardinals! Thriving-7-9 days. I was so happy thinking they would all make it. Naive in my part. Our neighbor’s outside cat ate two of them. The 3rd one I found in a bromeliad plant (in its cup). My husband thought it was dead. Leave it, he yelled. I picked it up and it was still breathing. Not knowing how long he had been in there and how long it’d be before the parents felt safe to return to the nest. I dug up some earth worms and fed tiny little pieces. I QUICKLY Reinforced the nest by putting inside the same basket as in your video (I grow orchids). Waited for mom to fly back and heat the baby up (poor thing). Then I took some oak moss and covered it so no other wild life would see it (bid it well in the bushes high enough). The one baby made it and saw the 3 for a while in the backyard. The couple lives in our yard as I see them daily. I think they are getting ready to build a new nest.......

      While it's true that the baby Cardinals might have been eaten by a snake, raccoon, Bluejay or Great Horned Owl, I sympathize with your complaint about the "gifts" outdoor cats bring their owners. Bird numbers are certainly suffering in this country--down by a third in the last half century! That's mostly the result, though, of loss of habitat, pesticides, and climate change. (In other words, US.)
