Yeah! Reminds of me the first time I heard Meshuggah. It was Future Breed Machine, and then the whole Destroy Erase Improve album. I thought their way of playing skank beats or halftime stuff was like nothing else i had heard til' them, the whole thing rhythmically had a jazz fusion feel to it as well as Thonderdal's Holdsworth-like solos.
It resonated with me as a 16 year old and still does

I still think time of release pretty much phases this out, it's coincidence (first half of the 90s was advent of groovier metal after all, lots of this stuff). By the way, DEI booklet has their sources of inspiration noted - there's everything from Bjork, through Allan Holdsworth, Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Rush to Anthrax. So you can find grunge parts in Meshuggah if search well, I guess :).

wrong coach in their bakcs propably. I also was bodily removed in metal pubs for intense headbanging "too aggressive". This was inspired by americas szene (ian,bobby,rob,dime...) and now they want to appear "nordic" and "above" it. Music is a kultural statement now not a way to cope with stupid mass media and stupid society anymore, metal now is the sueciety it once banged against.

None EP has been released almost at the same time as Korn's debut album (like month later). I don't think they had a chance of influencing them. Besides, Korn weren't too much into rhytmical mindfuckery, which is Meshuggah's trademark. Korn was always into funky, hip hop bits (to put it simple), Meshuggah was still kinda technothrash back then (and maybe still is? who knows the genre now).

  • @meshuggahfan
