The plane tires used to have inner tubes. But they where not allowed to patch them. We would get them for free from the Airport and patch the hole and use them to float down the river. About 12 years ago they stopped using that type of tire.

@@South_Ga_mafia Oh, I hated when my turn came up to do wash rack (C-130, Dyess AFB). Hard as hell to clean that flat camo paint. I did have the great joy of changing a tire in Somalia, in 93. Mission to Kisamayu (sp?) delivering grain to locals. Such an underused runway, there was grass growing on it.

    • @tima.478
      @tima.478 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yeah it gets up there. On this particular plane, spin the wheel while applying 475-525 ft. lbs of torque. Fully loosen the nut, then while spinning the wheel again, final torque to 260 ft.lbs, install 2 lock bolts. Torque lock bolt nuts to 50-75 in lbs. Install cotter pins into lock bolt nuts. Turn tire to make sure it spins freely.

this video omits a great deal of information.
many times i do this job by myself almost always in the dark.
the jacks used under a 737 is rated for 50 tons to jack the main gear
the jacks used under a 787 or 380 are rated for 100 tons to jack the main gear.
most jacks have a reciprocating pneumatic pump driven by air or nitrogen to pump the jack up while removing the nitrogen from the tire prior to removing the axle nut.
large aircraft use multi disc brakes. to keep the brake discs aligned the parking brake needs to be applied. capturing the multiple discs while aligned with the removed wheel enables the installation of the replacement tire and wheel assy. otherwise it's exceptionally difficult to slide the wheel on to the axle and brake assy.
releasing the parking brake with the wheel off is no bueno as the brake discs become badly mis aligned where they are captured by the inner wheel assy.
there's a large bullet to protect the axle threads from the bearing races and enable sliding of the wheel over the threads.
once torqued - the axle nut has different redundant safety capture devices preventing the nut from loosening including pins / screws and safety wire.
tires are inflated to their full pressure while on jacks to prevent overloading the other tires on the joining landing gear / axle assy.

@@HighestRank Not true. It is a split rim and the brake stack (segmented rotors, not a drum) is seated inside the inner portion of the rim as the rim is mounted on the landing gear axle. The video shows the tires being mounted and dismounted from the split rims later in the video. You can also see the brake stack remain on the landing gear when the rim is removed from the landing gear.

Aircraft high pressure wheels/tires have to be put into a pressure changer for days to insure they don’t blow up before flight and on the plane. at SpangDahlem AB, Germany, one tire was in the tire shop and in the rack for pressure. It blew up, the German Nation that was near it, was in the hospital for months. When it blew were 3 blocks away, we thought a bomb had been se off.

old tires cannot be remelted to be used in making new tires, they just can be destroyed in smaller sizes to make new products as fillers to reduce raw material since it has been already cured in its final (rubber) form. retreading old lorry/truck tires will paste new rubber on the old detreaded which have lower strengh properties compared to new one but can reduce costs.

Not shown in the aircraft portion: You see the person inspecting the wheel half visually. Each aluminum wheel half is also inspected (NDT) by Eddy Currant Inspection which can find microscopic cracks even through the paint. Also, every one of the bolts that hold the wheel halves together is also sent through NDT for inspection by Fluorescent Magnetic Particle method.
Large aircraft tires have between 24 to 36 plys of material in the casing/carcass which allows them to be retreaded many times.

Almost all tires are filled with nitrogen, because air consists of 78 % nitrogen. But the tires of large aircrafts are filled with 99.9 % nitrogen. :-)

@ 3:25 you called the tire a rim, a rim is another word for wheel so its a tire in the machine not a rim.

9:30 these wheels are too heavy. An airplane requires everything lightweight.

That must be a pretty small airport seeing as none of the mechanics are wearing ear protection while its at a gate ...in a busy one theyd need to
