    After warming the crowd up with a few jokes, Ardern warned of the threats currently posed to democracy around the world, and touted New Zealand as a country that has been able to overcome political divides to pass significant legislation. Ardern received a standing ovation when she talked about her country's ability to come together and ban 'military style semi-automatics and assault rifles' and to legalise abortion

      a lesson on gun control..???? do your Home work Guardian,, NZ now has the largest gun crime statistics...ever... while our so called leader sits on the tonight show, Auckland has a speight of drive by gang shootings on residential homes....the gun buy back was a forced buy back, you had a time frame to hand in your guns....it wasn't optional, it cost this country millions and for what? nothing why? because the crimes didn't hand their weapons in......obviously, the gun control here was a total failure, America needs to learn from this,

    A lot of people might not notice the last thing she said, about algorithms in social media, but that was the most important. I come from the Philippines where a huge majority of voters picked the son of the former dictator, who has used social media to his advantage. The last thing she said was the most important threat to democracies all over the world.

    • @collydub1987
      @collydub1987 2 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      The algorithm doesn't vote tho. People still have to make the conscious decision to vote for whoever it may be. And why is it only right wing candidates that are accused of using social media to their advantage? Do you actually think so called liberals wouldn't do it too??

    • @Davao420
      @Davao420 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@collydub1987 you don't understand. This has been proven, at least in the case of the philippines, the slow trickle of disinformation that helps form the internal narratives of people. Once it clicks, facts will no longer matter. Imagine saying the time of the dictator was the golden age of the Philippines, even when all evidence points to the opposite - the preservation of the internal narratives becomes the paramount concern, not getting to the truth. I've seen this happen to people, it's shocking.

      @@collydub1987 Thanks a lot.. Finally someone with some common sense.. While social media manipulation of national elections is a well known fact, the people have to actually vote to change the outcome.. While a couple of conservative leaders have used such gimmicks to come to power, liberals are by no means innocent.. If social media companies followed what Jacinda suggests, and if such algorithms to dictate where public opinion is headed, that very algorithms can be a potent weapon of a power hungry politician, liberal OR conservative.. Since silicone valley is traditionally left learning, the former is more likely.. In this respect, Jacinda's suggestion has a scary prospect on ideological domination..

    I am a U.K. citizen. I have worked and lived for a while in America. The biggest difference I saw was that in America a person takes their identity from their political orientation. To a much greater degree than is the case in G.B. and every other country I have visited. Sadly this is something in America which can and does degrades civil discourse to a point where meaningful conversation is not possible. Because I was not an American and because I spoke with a British accent I was able to maintain a politically neutral position. However, I can easily appreciate how difficult to near impossible this must be for a born and bred American. This matters because a successful democracy is based on a free exchange of ideas. It is dictatorships which censor free expression.

      You are certainly correct, her country is not free of problems. In fact we have had more gun violence since she jack booted the gun control measures after the Christchurch shootings.
      So that worked, NOT.
      So much other stuff she gets wrong that does not get reported overseas.
      As far as I am concerned, if you like her, keep her, most of us don't want her back.
      She is destroying this country.
      We as a country are deeper in debt than we have ever been.
      She raves about climate change, then imports coal from Indonesia to run the power plants to charge the electric vehicles she wants us to buy. We had a supply of higher quality coal in the ground here but we are no longer allowed to mine it because it could be harmful to the environment.
      So it must be ok to do that harm in another country right?
      So many lies told to get her elected, people are finally starting to open their eyes, hopefully next election we give her the boot. It can't come soon enough in my opinion.

      Simon Hayes we would not have her as prime minister if we had not had electoral reform and moved to a mixed member proportional (MMP) system. It has allowed us to move from a situation where the two major parties essentially ‘took it in turns’ to form a government. Nothing like having to form a coalition with a smaller party to create change. True, it can create uncertainty but as voters have matured with the system they now know how to make their votes count regardless of their political preferences. It is a much fairer system, we have an electoral commission that determines electorate boundaries and no longer can parties gerrymander. Don’t worry we’ve had imbecilic and corrupt representatives too, you’re not alone there ☮️

Up until her recent re-election in 2020, no party in New Zealand history ever won a majority government compared to how many majorities won in Canada by both Liberal and Conservative Parties. That's a reflection of how well she managed the COVID crisis more than anything else. But in 2022 where Canada has a minority parliament and the nuts of Canada declare a dictatorship, New Zealand has mostly run on minority parliaments. Also New Zealand has always been a bit more progressive than the rest of us. After all the first women to gain suffrage on the globe were New Zealanders in 1893. So for a parliament showing an equal number of men and women makes logical sense. Obviously you really do know know what democracy means if you are suggesting New Zealand does not have a thriving parliamentary democracy. Obviously stating bull without facts leads to conclusions that may be you don't claim to be who you are.

      In any event, threat of the largest Class Action lawsuit in NZ's history forced her to back down on the Vaccine Passport system and end it months before it was due for reviewal.
      prior to this, many tens of thousands took to the streets an protest, week after week, for six months, ending with the protest on parliament grounds that was handled so tragically by our government.
