When he was happily eating the treat after you took the bubble off and he knew he won I imagine he was saying "Listen Vanessa, we both said things we don't mean. You, that you were going to to give me a bath. Me, that I'm not afraid of an arson charge and I have a fantastic lawyer on retainer."
Vanessa, thank you for your videos, I’ve learned so much! I’ve never bathed my 13 year old long-hair domestic kitty, but now that he’s older he is having a little harder time. The other night I found poop stuck in his fur on his back end, which has never happened! THANKS TO YOU I knew how to approach and handle him, to have some tube to squeeze out and distract him, and to have everything ready to go. I was shocked at how well he behaved (he didn’t LIKE it lol but he didn’t fight it either). I only wet and soaped up his back end while he rested his forepaws & head up on my shoulder, which actually gave me plenty of access. So THANK YOU again, Vanessa!!
I have to wonder if he's just easily over-stimulated, which would explain his enjoying the brushing while growling at the same time. A friend's cat was like this. Sweetest boy, but could only be brushed/pet a little bit before starting to lash out. Would just let him come back when he was ready for more.
My kitty is kinda like this. She likes our silicone brush but if we get in there with the metal one she'll only accept so much before she needs a break.
I have a black/white cat like that. We found this tiny kitten in the yard. So we have had her all her life and she is over stimulated so quickly. She knows not to bite. She puts her teeth on me but never bites. Her mother is a feral cat that shows up to get water here. Love all kitties.
She may smell like a male cat. This can trigger an aggressive response in other male cats(especially if they are not neutered) towards humans even when they are trying to illicit attention and affection.
This happens with my moms cat. She loves being groomed and will purr loudly (she makes some strange sounds) but also start running around and trying to bite the brush.
I loved the paw on the comb That was a polite no My old ragdoll does the same thing She gives kisses after grooming, so I know she holds no grudge She really hates her tail brushed out
This is orange behavior. My orange is basically a friendly dog when home, coming up to and greeting visitors. But when we bring him to the vet, the Spice Switch is activated. One time, they put a hannibal lecter type mask on him. And another time he was sedated for grooming and when I picked him up, the tech said "hes a angry still, I'd give him space" 😂😂 (he was fine lol)
Strange, I had orange cats, my neighbor has one, they never acted any more extreme than other cats. There is even a new stray male that absolutely loves people and needs his 30 minute pet whenever he meets you. I don't know where this orange cat must be crazy idea originates from.
Each cat has their own personality. They talk about "tortietude". Well I have had two and they both were beyond sweet and would not even fight back when the others gelot sassy with them. Animals are as individual as people.
"Sassy" is certainly one word for it. Not the one that immediately springs to my mind. What's the word that describes a recalcitrant child who's never had any boundaries enforced and is not accustomed to not getting his or her own way?
Some cats get overstimulated by petting/brushing which causes them to lash out. The flipping tail is a sign. My girl does that too, not so fast though. That was fast, lol.
We had a little tuxedo cat who was normally sweet, but things would upset her and we would have to deal with her Cat-itude for several days. She loved our big Ragdoll/MC male cat, but he would usually be the one responsible for her anger & angst.
That's how my Snuggles views his brush, although he does like it on his chin and a bit on his head. The rest of the body can only get 1 brush at a time before returning to the cheeks.
i love that you err on the side of the pet’s well being, instead of an ego. it would be very easy to get a big ego at this stage of your career and take the cat’s behavior as a challenge, stressing the cat out in the process. thank you for looking out for the snippy kitty’s wellbeing.
This kind of behavior is why some people find cat body language confusing. It's not to this extreme, but my cat does this to strangers. Leans in for pets and then will hiss at them. For any cat lover who criticizes people who don't necessarily like cats or feels unsure about them, this is one of the reasons why. They interact with a cat who is unsure or scared and they do this confusing behavior.
once i learned hissing was usually to indicate nervousness, being unsure, or confusion and not aggression cat body language like this made so much more sense. it’s still kind of a scary sound so it’s hard to not find it threatening on instinct tho unfortunately lol
Mine is the same as this one. Like the brush, but does not like being brushed. Sitting in the middle of the room don't help either. Some cats simply don't like to be brushed, period.
It's never a pointless video! I always love all your videos. I ordered from your website and I'm so happy to support your work and channel! The way you treat cats with respect and care is always so great to see.
Cats hissing has just lost all meaning to me. I've got a 16ish year old tabby that I got as a kitten. I swear she will hiss and still be purring while sitting in my lap. Doesn't help that I've got 2 others that are very young that barely even meow, let alone hiss or growl.
same. my girl whos like 16/17, likes to go outside. you open the door and she just hisses at the wind, then turns and goes back inside. perpetually grumpy cat, she hisses for no reason. hisses and purrs at the same time.
I had an orange tiger striped polydactyl kitty. his front paws looked like he was wearing mittens so he definitely had thumbs. He was also very smart. he figured out how to make the printer monster spit paper at him.
I had a three Boy Forrest cats, they were all gentle souls, one loved grooming, all I had to do was show him the brush, and he would follow me to the ends of the earth, He would lay on his stomach where ever he wanted grooming, but God help me when water was involved!

Try a copper pin brush. I had a large girl who despised being brushed until she discovered my copper brush. After that anytime i tried to brush my hair she was there.
He seemed a overstimulated by the brushing. And never really recovered from that. There is great wisdom in not pushing things beyond what the cat could handle. As always, your videos are exceptional and greatly appreciated!
I wonder if he's a more sensitive cat? For some cats, grooming and brushing can be VERY stimulating, to the point that they growl, hiss, or swat to tell you "Hey, stop it! I can't take any more!" You said that the owners have difficulties brushing him out at home too, so perhaps it's a case of he does enjoy being brushed out (evident by rubbing the brush) but gets overstimulated easily from it (the growling and eventual hissing and swatting). We had a tortie (May she be at peace now) that got brushed every day by my grandma until she couldn't take care of the girl anymore. So it then fell to me to take care of her when she got to trust us, and she LOOOOOVED being brushed and groomed....but every now and then I would notice her tail would start going and if I pulled back at that point, she'd swat or try to nip me....but in the reverse of this guy where she wanted me to keep going, lol. I miss that baby girl. We only had her for a few years, but she left an imprint on my heart.
I imagine the cats that react like him are very overwhelmed by all the scents and being in a new environment. Maybe there’s other animal scents or hair etc. When a cat is on edge/high alert, probably hard to force them into anything after that point. But he’s such a fluffy and cute boy hehe
OMG! He soooo looks like my childhood cat, Tiger. And Tiger was the same way - He could go from zero to 100 in a second, if you did something he didn't like. The rest of the time he was a giant love bug.
I totally agree with you. I have a Siberian and the first thing I tell everyone is not to pet him. He has three layers of hairs and petting is just too much of an overstimulation. You need to give him massages and rub downs and he is your forever friend. He also loves to have his head and cheeks brushed; but to do his back end he will grab your hand with both paws and pull it to his face. Brushing anything from his middle down is always a tussle.
I've had three forest cats. None of them really liked that sort of brush, or any brush for that matter. I only used Greyhound combs, as suggested by their breeder.
I remember my cousins cat used to lie on her back so she could get her belly rubbed. After a couple of seconds she would wrap her front paws around your wrist , bite you between the thumb and first finger and then rake your forearm with her back claws. My three cousins would have contests to see who could hold out the longest! 😂
All cats do this if you teach them to buy playing aggressively with them after rubbing their belly. If you just rub a cat's belly and don't play with them they won't start biting you but once you start this game every single time you rub the cat's belly it will bite you
She was treating your arm like another cat to play fight with. This is friendly behaviour but you have to teach them not to do it with people. Reacting like a cat, with either a pained meow or a hiss sends the message that what they did went too far. They will either stop and let go, or lick your arm to show you they didn't mean any harm. With most cats it only takes a few times to teach them to be more gentle, but it's important not to overstimulate them to the point where they get too excited and lose it.
A friend of mine has a longhair red tabby who will nuzzle you, rub on you, cuddle up with you, while also hissing and snarling and growling. You never know if she’s going to nuzzle your ear or bite it off.

I think you did a wonderful job considering the kitty disposition on that fellow. I have been blessed to be around cats my entire life and they have been the lives of my life. It is all about patience, love and consideration as you clearly show in your work.
He is exactly like my cat, they belongs to tsundere type of cat. They love it sometimes but they won't acknowledge it so they hissing all the time
This is not where I want to. I need to explore this place first before I let you do these things
“You said my coat was in perfect condition. I don’t need to be groomed!”
