    The most gifted footballer of a generation.

    I don't think we'll ever see such an elegant, classy, two-footed maestro quite this joyful to watch again, and this makes me a little sad. Partly because Glenn was a little unfulfilled as a player for various reasons (though he still left behind a great body of work, that's for sure!) and partly because no one will ever be as good to watch. But thanks for the memories, Glenn.
    Great video.

    Most naturally talented English footballer that has ever graced the game. Born in an era of 'hoof it upfield' footy of early 80s he was a class apart. Europe was in awe of him could not understand why England didn't build the team around him. Tottenham legend would be worth millions today. Hod - thanks for the memories

    I was 49 yesterday, Thankfully old enough to have seen this genius live, I was lucky enough to have been at many of his game including the Oxford game, his last for Spurs, loved the way he dummies on to his backside, and his twist and turn away at Watford, are 2 of my top 5 goals, then there's the volley against Man utd.......legend, who only tarnished his deity by playing then managing Chelski, and helping raise them from 2nd division where they belonged

    • @frankkelly8749

      I was there at white hart lane for the goal he scored against Oxford....I couldn't wait to see it again on the match of the day that night....knew it would be shown.....one of his best goals.......do you realize with one stroke of the ball he went from his own end through the legs of one defender then dummied the goaltender......brilliant...we had a great team that year.....we should of won a trophy we were in all 3 of them that year..... semi final of the league cup...fa.cup runner up...3rd place in the league.

    I am a Man Utd fan but I loved that Spurs team of the late 70's early 80's. Hoddle,Perryman,Crooks,Roberts, Archibald, Miller, Houghton and all. Big mistake was England building a team around Keegan. In Spain,Germany,Brazil, Italy and France Glenn Hoddle would have been a GOD!

    Hoddle, Waddle, Gazza, Wilkins, Barnes, Beardsley, Cowans, Platt all played for England in a decade. Now we have Henderson and Walcott. Where did all our technical ability go?!

  • @razorrabone4098
    @razorrabone4098 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    For some reason English players of this quality never get any recognition they deserve!! Case in point people rave about Lampard and Gerrard but neither one of those two were fit to lace Paul Scholes boots. I'd imagine from purely an English perspective Glenn was untouchable in his day - although he only got like 50 odd caps? Surely he should have had 100 and the team be built around him? He reminds me a bit of Pirlo.

    • @razorrabone4098
      @razorrabone4098 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I dunno Gareth I'm with you in that Scholes didn't have a great England career but he was also pushed out of position on the left too often for Eriksson. Under Glenn Hoddle Scholes was kind of decent.

    When these 3 players : Hoddle, Waddle, Barnes played at the same time for England, the moment I would be waiting for was the freekick, esp when left foot was favoured to use; Waddle and Barnes, usually gave it up to Hoddle.

    i first saw hoddle at the FA cup Final against Man City then against QPR. i was 13 and thanks to him i began to appreciate the playmakers in the game. Unlike George Best, Liam Brady, Charlton or any, Hoddle was the only one who COULD DO A NUTMEG IN 1 SECCOND folloed by a goal-assisting 30 metre pass the very next SECOND ! UBERCLASS !

    The fact as a country we've never appreciated his kind of talents says it all.

    • @alextavoularis8761
      @alextavoularis8761 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ien Obik This is english football!They like players who can't even control the ball and players who are more like wrestlers and not technicians.That's the reason that Hoddle never been appreciated such as other english players.Hoddle was a real genius.If he was playing in Netherlands,in Germany,in France,in Spain or in Italy he would be a hero.

    • @alextavoularis8761
      @alextavoularis8761 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ien Obik And let me say that traditional english football philosophy and playing style is awful and disgusting.They 're playing constantly with high passes and the ball is always in the air.They don't like beautiful and technical football and most of them CAN'T play beautiful and technical football.English football was dominating by artless ''woodcutters''.Premier league became the best league in the world due to FOREIGN players.Everyone knows that.Personally,I love dutch football philosophy and style because it's the exact opposite.

    Oh and my almost namesake Gareth Hall (I'm Gary Hall !!)-is spot on about Scholes-classic example of a player becoming better in his absence because of the failure of others-Scholes(for England) had to score to remind you he was playing at times I felt-btw I have nothing against Utd particularly-Giggs was wonderful. Do slightly disagree with you Gareth on Shearer, mind.

    In 1986, the problem was in the defense. In 1990, it was Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle to be blamed for their penalty shot miss. In 1998, almost everyone blamed Beckham. In 2002, it was David Seaman's nightmare. In 2006, well...Rooney ? CR7 provocation ? or Ricardo's 3 penalty save ? In 2010.. all players to be blamed ?

  • @SuperForest78
    @SuperForest78 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The volleys against my team and hero(Forest and Shilts) and United were incredible and the Watford -goal divine skill. Eng chose to build the team in the 80s around injury-prone workmanlike Robson and regarded Hod as a luxury-which says all you need to know about English football sadly-Utd fans would slate me over this but Utd and (to a much lesser degree) England found some 'success' once Robson had done. Got so sick of watching Eng mid of Robson and Wilkins during the 80's-not fit to lace Hoddles boots(but he didn't backtrack you know !!!!)

  • @lexsoft
    @lexsoft 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd prefer him playing for Real Madrid instead of Barca so at El Classico we could see him battling in midfield against Xavi/Iniesta/Fabregas. Besides, we would see him teach Cristiano Ronaldo how to take the freekick and long range shot by both right and left foot.

  • @xSoccerxCorex
    @xSoccerxCorex 16 ปีที่แล้ว

    the balls to be honest were actually a little lighter, like playing with a slighty heavier volleyball.

  • @jbdoggy
    @jbdoggy 16 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dalglish was great, prob best in scotland at the time. But he was no playmaker, more the creative forward type. During his Liverpool days, it was Souness who was the team's engine. A tough no nonsense defensive midfielder similar to Dunga. Liverpool only had a playmaker when Molby came along.

    I thought then that only me who was disappointed when Robson didn't call him into England squad for WC 1990. But I don't blame Neil Webb, as he has skill too. I would rather remove Steve McMahon/Steve Hodge/Trevor Steven and give his place to Hoddle.

  • @rexmagnum8047
    @rexmagnum8047 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A good player, but somewhat over rated I've always thought. I watched him a lot in his playing days and thought some people were quite precious about talking him up. The second to last goal in this vid is exceptional though... and he could get some real power into longer range shots with those long legs.

  • @jbdoggy
    @jbdoggy 16 ปีที่แล้ว

    The most gifted midfielder produced in England. He could be what platini or Cruijff was for France and Oranje respectively, just that there were some pretty dumb England managers who couldnt decide whether to build the team around him or play the traditional physical english game. Eventually physicality won the order of the day, & so Hoddle's England career came to an end - 55 caps. The same dumb managers who thot that Shilton was better than Clem after a period of indecision!

  • @bachittarsinghlehal1687

  • @gammergq
    @gammergq 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    No I am insightful, Platini one of the greatest ever even said the same in not much words, in this country we have always historically been a nation that squanders flared or technically gifted talent either shifting them out them out to the wing ( Beckham, Scholes, J.Cole etc) or not playing them at all (Shackleton, Hudson, Bowles,Cunningham,LeTissier etc) or castrating them for their lack work ethic (Hoodle etc), Zidane Talent would of never had a chance in the stone age mentality of our game.
