I dont know about "gathering rooms" in primary school we ate lunch in our classrooms mostly. Socializing was done in recess for the most part.
In secondry school we still brought our own food but you were allowed to head to a grocery school or supermarket to buy food and snacks if one were nearby and you could make it back in time.
My high school had a big eating room with a cafeteria but im not sure that’s a thing with every high school in Norway.

In Denmark, I had a cafeteria, but it was rarely used.
