I lived in New Orleans for five years. Worked on Tchoupitoulas Street and on my way to work one morning drove past a pothole so big someone had put a washing machine or fridge in it. This was the top end by childrens hospital. To this day I wonder if they took the appliance out before filling the hole. I have since returned home to New Zealand and when Kiwis complain about the roads here I think of that damn pothole. Lol.
Yep. I drove through Louisiana twice, stayed in a hotel a couple nights on the 1st trip. The _interstate_ freeways had more potholes than I've ever seen in an interstate in any other part of CONUS I've gone or lived in so far...& I live in Florida now, lived in California & Nevada for a few years, & traveled through much of the South & Midwest & parts of the Northeast. Let that sink in (no pun intended).
My car was actually stolen here & recovered in the Fisher Projects 3 days later. Luckily, it was still driveable & hadn't been torn apart. This was several years before Katrina hit, & these projects hardcore at that time. What was I doing there? Going to buy some weed. Lmao!
There's a million and one of them. Stupid idiots go to the 'hood' to buy drugs and think it's hip and daring to go into 'that' world. Sometimes it works out and everyone comes out alive and with the drugs. While other times, there's a breakout of violence and robberyand someone gets it. No drugs, money stolen, a life lost.

Most of the video is not in the 9. You’re in the 8th Ward. U started the video on Galvez and Elysian Fields Ave by the green store. That’s the 8th ward. U don’t hit the 9th Ward til u go down Galvez and go over the bridge. That’s the upper 9th ward. Then u go over another bridge into the lower 9.
I wasn't being specific because i'm not from there I was just mentioning that neighborhood in the title because it was featured in the video and was famous for being flooded by Hurricane Katrina. I knew i was there because I asked that woman I gave change to.
HONESTO UNO the 9th Ward is known for sure as being 1 of the toughest areas in the city. Theres been a lot of progress going on. But there are other areas nowadays that’s way worst than the 9th Ward. The city in general is very bad right now. I still live here as we speak so I see how much worst it’s getting everyday

You can bet the situation was like that pre-Katrina. All over the South, many predominately non-white and some white communities bear the same scars of neglect. Politicians are responsible for some community deterioration, some, the inhabitants' with their poor value systems and some, inadequate skilled labor workforce. Until these neighborhoods establish their own economic infrastructure, they will continue to suffer. Nobody is going to fix your community for you but you. If someone else fixes it for you, you are unlikely to take care of the product. Let that sink in for a minute and get busy improving your quarter acre lot. Hopefully, your neighbor will copy your efforts and so on, until the whole community is upgraded. Then, maybe the politicians will help with street upgrades. Hope comes from within!
I lived in a pink house till I was 4. There was a dealer across the street and the buildings were like civil war old. When I asked my parents about it they said it was one of the best neighborhoods in our State (we lived in Rhode island so idk how "good" it supposedly was) we moved out and I haven't seen the place sense. Idk what it's like now.
My guess is less uber-desirable locale rental properties held by near or actual slumlords, after the old paint has chipped off from 60 years of sun, rain and neglect, is most likely replaced with the cheapest bulk buy paint the landlord's maintenance lackeys can find at a wholesale/warehouse hardware store. *"Hey, these 500 gallons of 1960's carnation pink paint were never picked up by the 'Porky Pig Tribute Park'-people, $100 bucks and it's YOURS.."*

Hi I'm from New Orleans! I recognized some landmarks and important avenues. These video clips weren't only from the Lower Ninth Ward. A lot are also from the Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, and Upper Ninth Wards, and also the Marigny. But man, some of these streets and areas are worse than Detroit's! 😳 😮

New Orleans one of the most interesting cities, and they go buy wards 17 of em and the state still goes by parishes. Well dang that was depressing. I know it's winter but, where are all the trees? Where are the stores? As a lifelong californian I'd probably fall into depression living there it's so dark and desolate. I'm thankful for these videos though, I used to complain about California but man it's a lot more green and nicer on the eyes than a lot of these places. I mean the ghetto parts suck but at least they have trees.
rechelieu tartempion - Ummm I wasn't exactly criticizing the city itself I was moreso talking about the lack of greenery and vegetation which is a result of the geographical placement, terrain, and climate of Louisiana, not anything the Africans created or didn't create. I understand there are less stores because it's a more rural area towards the outskirts.
Hersheys B - Well just about anywhere is more humid than California. I live here. We might be "dry" compared to other parts of the country but our humidity levels are actually pretty normal. The heat feels very dry, but I'd rather take that than humid heat. When I went to New York in the summer, I took a shower stepped outside and immediately felt dirty. My skin became sticky literally upon walking outside, right after taking a fresh shower! I know it's just moisture but my skin feels sticky and dirty every time I go to the east coast. It's amazing how different it feels in different states.

This actually looks a lot better than what I thought it would, figured it would look like Detroit where almost all the lots on a block are empty and the few houses standing are burned, condemned/abandoned and falling in on themselves. Figured after the hurricane a lot of people never moved back and expected to see way more vacant lots/abandoned houses. Looks like most of those were being lived in judging by cars parked in front of them. Also you can see some of these houses have been raised up 4 or 5 feet off the ground because of the hurricane.
Louisiana is sinking and no amount of asphalt will hold up. The richest areas in New Orleans have the same roads and worse. The next Katrina may be the end. Just like the west coast with fires, flooding landslides and earthquakes. Move away. Earth constantly evolves and moves on and there is no stopping Mother Nature and the evolution for said Earth.

Actually, these homes aren't all that bad. Matter of fact, were the community to simply pool some funds to hire the locals to paint houses and do a little yard work, this could be reminiscent of some college towns I've driven through.

I was in NOLA looking for a place to stay with the now ex wife back after Katrina. We were there for the rebuilding effort. She was already unimpressed; prices were 3x what were were used to for half as much. However, I could tell we were NOT moving there once I drove her through the lower 9th ward.

Google shotgun house in Google images. It's a mainly a southern thing. Niagara Falls NY had a few sprinkled here and there but they are mostly found in New Orleans.
i'm not sure how anyone that can afford a house can live without fear in places like these. all of these homes so close together, theyre just asking to be robbed. i live in rural mountains and still lock my doors every night. people are strange.
My hubby lived and worked near Jackson Square for 35+ years, near the Quarter prior to Katrina in 2005. He came to NYC, and we met, became friends and married in 2008. Now that caregiving for my elderly mom is complete (she passed away peacefully at 95, in 2017), we will be moving back to NOLA. I cannot wait. Our downtown NY nabe is now over run by superficial know-it-all preppies; no one cares about anything but making money for themselves, shopping online, creating momentary...short term connections. The funk, the history, and the juice which I remember when I first moved here in 1975? Gone..with freaking the wind..at least New Orleans is still rebuilding, and we can roll up our sleeves, and be an active part of that. Looking forward to a place where there are areas that are coming back, not turning rich, snotty and exclusive.

@@freeralo6787 Thank you for your question. I live 84 miles from Kiyv in a small town where the southern bypass road is not finished. As a result, heavyweights have to drive directly through the geographical center here. In addition, in our country there are problems with overloaded trucks that destroy both old and new roads. Roads in Kiyv are good, at least for the last 5 years.
god boy That’s interesting, thanks for the insight. One of the rare things we do well in the US are weight inspections, where heavy trucks are required to weighed as they cross from state to state. If they are overweight, they may not be allowed to continue. In small towns with poor infrastructure, heavy trucks would be prohibited. It sounds like these policies would be useful in Ukraine, but only if corruption could not undermine the process
You was in the 9th ward until like 3:15 then you was in the 8th ward. If you would of crossed the industrial canal then you would of been in the lower 9th ward but you was in the 9th ward tho at the beginning of the video but it wasn't the lower 9

They're are people still leaving there in houses that were damaged by Katrina. I've seen some that were under about 8 ft of water for days. Some in the neighborhood had sunk down into the ground by several inches from one side of the house to the other. Sad

I dream about that too! I can barely get by but I try to feed some neighbors a few times every week that don't have much and I fed the alley cats. Just stopping to chat with the old, sick and lonely can make a huge difference in someone's day. It makes me sad that I don't have the money to open homeless shelters and day programs for the mentally I'll and elderly open an animal rescue farm. 😢 so many people with money; hold onto it when they could spend it to help others and still invest to keep that money grow.
It looks much better, though, than in 2011, when I rode through. There was almost nobody there living, you still saw boats turned over from Katrina on the side of the streets. So actually nice to see recovery, which is probably over now due to Covid
Every since the storm, its's seems like the city has not provided the proper funding, and tools to help the areas that were heavily destroyed to recover. New Orleans to me seems more like a northern city meaning some of areas will have a lot of older structures that many people may think it's a bad area but it's not. It's just age of the structures that may give a particular section or part of town the feel and look that it's unsafe(sometimes). Its one of the only cities in the US that has its own culture, such as in food, the dialect, music. To add, Louis Armstrong park was nice that highlighted the greats from NO such as Louis Armstrong, and Mahalia Jackson to name a few and also the history of Congo square. Hopefully the residents can put pressure on their local council representative to bring attention to the areas that have been neglected if they already have.

Sure as heck did! It was flooded by hurricane Katrina in 2005 with people waiting rescue on rooftops and many deaths.

You can bet the situation was like that pre-Katrina. All over the South, many predominately non-white and some white communities bear the same scars of neglect. Politicians are responsible for some community deterioration, some, the inhabitants' with their poor value systems and some, inadequate skilled labor workforce. Until these neighborhoods establish their own economic infrastructure, they will continue to suffer. Nobody is going to fix your community for you but you. If someone else fixes it for you, you are unlikely to take care of the product. Let that sink in for a minute and get busy improving your quarter acre lot. Hopefully, your neighbor will copy your efforts and so on, until the whole community is upgraded. Then, maybe the politicians will help with street upgrades. Hope comes from within!

I lived in a pink house till I was 4. There was a dealer across the street and the buildings were like civil war old. When I asked my parents about it they said it was one of the best neighborhoods in our State (we lived in Rhode island so idk how "good" it supposedly was) we moved out and I haven't seen the place sense. Well dang that was depressing. I know it's winter but, where are all the trees? Where are the stores? As a lifelong californian I'd probably fall into depression living there it's so dark and desolate. I'm thankful for these videos though, I used to complain about California but man it's a lot more green and nicer on the eyes than a lot of these places. Hersheys B - Well just about anywhere is more humid than California. I live here. We might be "dry" compared to other parts of the country but our humidity levels are actually pretty normal. The heat feels very dry, but I'd rather take that than humid heat. When I went to New York in the summer, I took a shower stepped outside and immediately felt dirty. My skin became sticky literally upon walking outside, right after taking a fresh shower! I know it's just moisture but my skin feels sticky and dirty every time I go to the east coast. It's amazing how different it feels in different states.

This actually looks a lot better than what I thought it would, figured it would look like Detroit where almost all the lots on a block are empty and the few houses standing are burned, condemned/abandoned and falling in on themselves. Figured after the hurricane a lot of people never moved back and expected to see way more vacant lots/abandoned houses. Looks like most of those were being lived in judging by cars parked in front of them. Also you can see some of these houses have been raised up 4 or 5 feet off the ground because of the hurricane.

She was already unimpressed; prices were 3x what were were used to for half as much. However, I could tell we were NOT moving there once I drove her through the lower 9th ward.

My hubby lived and worked near Jackson Square for 35+ years, near the Quarter prior to Katrina in 2005. He came to NYC, and we met, became friends and married in 2008. Now that caregiving for my elderly mom is complete (she passed away peacefully at 95, in 2017), we will be moving back to NOLA. I cannot wait. Our downtown NY nabe is now over run by superficial know-it-all preppies; no one cares about anything but making money for themselves, shopping online, creating momentary...short term connections. The funk, the history, and the juice which I remember when I first moved here in 1975? Gone..with freaking the wind..at least New Orleans is still rebuilding, and we can roll up our sleeves, and be an active part of that. Looking forward to a place where there are areas that are coming back, not turning rich, snotty and exclusive.

As a result, heavyweights have to drive directly through the geographical center here. In addition, in our country there are problems with overloaded trucks that destroy both old and new roads. Roads in Kiyv are good, at least for the last 5 years.

If they are overweight, they may not be allowed to continue. In small towns with poor infrastructure, heavy trucks would be prohibited. I dream about that too! I can barely get by but I try to feed some neighbors a few times every week that don't have much and I fed the alley cats. Just stopping to chat with the old, sick and lonely can make a huge difference in someone's day. It makes me sad that I don't have the money to open homeless shelters and day programs for the mentally I'll and elderly open an animal rescue farm. 😢 so many people with money; hold onto it when they could spend it to help others and still invest to keep that money grow.

Every since the storm, its's seems like the city has not provided the proper funding, and tools to help the areas that were heavily destroyed to recover. New Orleans to me seems more like a northern city meaning some of areas will have a lot of older structures that many people may think it's a bad area but it's not. It's just age of the structures that may give a particular section or part of town the feel and look that it's unsafe(sometimes). Its one of the only cities in the US that has its own culture, such as in food, the dialect, music. To add, Louis Armstrong park was nice that highlighted the greats from NO such as Louis Armstrong, and Mahalia Jackson to name a few and also the history of Congo square. Hopefully the residents can put pressure on their local council representative to bring attention to the areas that have been neglected if they already have.
