Martin Garrix & Bebe Rexha - In The Name Of Love | Theory & Arrangement Breakdown

  • Matt Donner is back with another one of his signature theory and arrangement breakdowns. This time, he analyses Martin Garrix & Bebe Rexha’s summer hit, “In The Name Of Love”. In addition to pointing out the song’s key and chord progression, Matt touches on a topic a lot of you have requested: melody writing.
    The vocal melodies, as well as the synth melodies, embody catchy and predictable patterns, without being too repetitive. Matt explains how Martin Garrix and Bebe Rexha achieve this, while pointing out the notes they leverage.
    He also covers other familiar concepts like relative modality (seen in the bridge), note pedaling (seen in the drop), chord inversions, and the song arrangement format. This is a must-watch for fans of the song, as well as music theory enthusiasts.

    This is one of those Sherlock Holmes things where it boggles the mind until Sherlock explains it, then it all seems so simple, and we wonder how we couldn't see it in the first place.

    I've got a suggestion, it's a bit older song then usual tho: Porter Robinson - Lionhearthed. After the first drop u get a breakdown then a sort of build up, just that it keeps on getting filler. then u expect a drop but it doesnt come, instead u hear a bridge, i think it is. (wich sounds amazing). I would love theorie about that part. it totally changes the vibe of the song and i think there are some interresting notes used in the chords and melody. cheers :)

    When looking to your videos explaining the musical theory behind this hit songs, I just ask, do this guys really know what they are doing, all that music theory behind the songs, or they just do it because of luck? Because from what I've seen from Garrix or The Chainsmokers from their in the studio videos they don't talk too much about that kind of stuff

    • @NOLINK74
      @NOLINK74 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      there was a reddit about this same topic on r/EDMproduction
      Honestly if it sounds good just go wih it. The theory helps alot when analyzing

    • @kazantzakiss
      @kazantzakiss 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      you totally right,but they have the 'ear' you know,if they have it music theory doesn't play such major role

    • @MAISTROtheofficial
      @MAISTROtheofficial 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Dani Vicente Hey! I'm a producer and DJ myself, and from personal experience, I combine my ear with the theory. I do have some classical training. I normally start by using my ear. When I finish up the song (before mixing and mastering), I go back and review it with classical knowledge and music theory.

    • @temp0_remix
      @temp0_remix 7 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      A lot of the "theory" most EDM producers use really come from their thousands of hours of experience producing via trial and error, doing mostly just "what sounds good" to them. Yes, basic theory helps as far as understanding keys and chord progressions, but if you ever watch when these guys produce, they rarely will call a 4 or 5 note chord by its name. They will just move the notes around in the chord until it fits what they want. Music theory can define these chords, but there's little use to producers in doing so when creating. In my opinion, music theory (analysis) is really a backwards looking way to understand WHY or HOW something works, but not totally necessary to MAKE something work.

    • @danivicen
      @danivicen 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      'Music theory can define these chords, but there's little use to producers in doing so when creating' I thought that even knowing music theory may harm some of these guys, because a lot of them even break the scales without knowing and they achieve good sounding, rich chords that are kind of weird when written down, but also I think this is kind of sad because it's then a matter of luck? They have the ear to know when something sounds good, but they don't have the knowledge to make something good, so they will hit random notes until it sounds good, and that's kind of crazy, so is it useful to know how you can make an interesting chord progression, or is it really that useless music theory knowledge and it's better always to go with your ear? I think know the answer to this but I thinks it's kind of sad haha

  • @ignite137
    @ignite137 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not to be harsh to Martijn (that's what we called him here in The Netherlands) But all the melody line-credits in this breakdown, goes to Bebe. She recorded her own vocals at home so these ideas are totally hers.. Martin himself, is not a musician, because he paints only blocks in Ableton, a real musician would play chords and melody lines on a actual MIDI keyboard. But nevertheless, he has good ears to create interesting patterns and nice songs! Thanks for the interesting breakdown!

      you'd be surprise how many people can't play instruments and just can make good music.

    • @TierHarribel
      @TierHarribel 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      First of all, he uses FL Studio, not Ableton. Secondly, dj producers are musicians too.
      "A musician is a person who plays a musical instrument or is musically talented. Anyone who composes, conducts, or performs music may also be referred to as a musician"
      SEEB that remixed "I took a pill in Ibiza" actually chose to get rid of all their manual equipment in favor of just using a PC to do their producing. And you see where that got them :p
      Even Calvin Harris and Deadmau5 barely knows how to play an instrument, Calvin explained that he simply does string by string.
