30 years ago this Aug. Jeff died. I had the rare opportunity to know Jeff and his brothers, I went to Grant High with them. I watched Jeff go from playing in the quad to the stage with Steely Dan. Those who knew him were pretty proud of him but, we knew, he was supremely talented, we giggled at Sonny and Cher but when he got the call from Becker and Fagan, he was in the big time, what a trajectory, he is beloved and has almost acquired a cult status, he was that good, it blows my mind and I can say I hung out with him and partied. Another loss recently was another school friend, Dana Latham, he engineered the first few Toto albums. Toto was really a Grant High School production, a High School band a few years after high school. RIP Jeff, Mike and Dana, my mates.
A friend of mine shared this video with me. Thank you for posting it. Jim Keltner is an amazing drummer, as was Jeff. I am so happy that Jim not only mentioned (my uncle) Carlos Vega, but that he painted him with such bright colors. As a drummer myself, it's been 22 years since my uncle died, and even longer since Jeff dies, but I still listen to and am influenced and inspired by their playing today.
I could go on for volumes and years about Jeff, but what is even more striking is how great a rhythm section Jeff and Mike made. Their last work together on Kingdom of Desire is so tight and hip, especially Jake to the Bone. And what an unfair tragedy to their lovely parents. RIP guys, you were superb.
40 years after it's release, "Silk Degrees" still can hold its own against anything out in the market today; and the key to its longevity was Jeff's drums. I dare anyone to correct me.
Yeah, have to agree with this, the drumming on that record was flawless. Incredibly well-conceived and executed, and he was probably about 20 or 21(?).
@@mikekane6319 Agreed. '76 so he was barely 22. Incredible. He was NINETEEN when he did the whole (bar one track) of 'Katy Lied'. NINETEEN.. He was an absolute beast.
He said exactly what I have said. I never met Jeff, but yet I knew him through his playing. He was exceptionally smooth, polished, and powerful. I found out about his death a year later. I just kept saying 'No No No, not Jeff" I couldn't sleep that night and dreamed I visited his tomb. Years later I found his grave online and it looked exactly as the dream I had. I wish I met him. The other night I dreamed I was in Boz Scaggs band. Yeah, I know, it was only a dream. A wishful one.
As Jim said, Jeff touched the lives of his friends and his peers. And he also touched the lives and continues to touch the lives of countless musicians (not just drummers) and loyal fans everywhere. A truly talented and a magical human being.
Jeff is a great drummer, so is Jim Keltner. I love the story where George Harrison created a JIm Keltner fan club and put the info and address to sign up on his Living In The Material World album credits. jeff's drumming on Silk Degrees is phenom. That high hat, toms intro is one of the things you remember about the that great album. RIP Jeff Porcaro

It was one of the many examples for George‘s Python-influenced humour, and at the same time George showed his appreciation for Keltner. To simplify things, I just copied this from wikipedia: „On the back cover, underneath the second hand-print design, text provides details of the fictitious Jim Keltner Fan Club, information on which was available by sending a "stamped undressed elephant" - for: self-addressed envelope - to a Los Angeles postal address. This detail was an affectionate thank-you to the popular drummer (Starr would repeat the gesture on his album later in the year), as well as a light-hearted dig - in its use of "wing" symbols, like those in Wings' logo - at McCartney, who had recently launched a fan club for his new band.“
Jeff Porcaro is of the greatest drummers to ever pick up a pair of sticks. The young people who supposedly call themselves drummers today are not even worthy of oiling his kickdrum pedal.
I still remember that shock, when I read about Jeff's passing. I am still not over it. Such a wonderful drummer and still worth to listen to again and again. One of my strongest influences. ❤

A huge influence.It was listening to those shuffles,and the attention to his 'ghost notes' and 'groove tight pocket', ( his drums were fat and tuned in, and his sound and style was his own.) You knew when it was him playing, he had 'presence'. Rip to Carlos Vega too, loved his work. Jim Keltner; Massive Respect; to all the cats, that are so many. MrTonedeff I heard Keltner tell a story about his first years as a session player. Basically, he said he and every other dummer in town would have to nailed down their tracks in no time, otherwise the gig would go to Gordon. there's very little of hi on you tube, only an appearance with Derek and The Dominos on the Johnny Cash show in the 70's. You can tell even by that how good the guy was.
Yeah, I've seen that performance. That was great. Gordon is one of my favorite drummers, his whole playing on the Layla-album is unbeatable. Just a terrific musician. No wonder he was one of the most sough after session players in his days.

Keltner was discussed as a possible drummer for Clapton but Gordon lobbied hard and the rhythm section Clapton scooped up from Delaney Bramlett was a package deal. The Dominoes would become Harrison's house band for the making of "All Things Must Pass."
Don't know much about Jeff Porcaro, but he sounds like a great guy and superb drummer. I'm disappointed that Jim Hodder, original drummer with Steely Dan, is not included in the conversation.

To hear a legend like Keltner, one of the greatest, talk like that about Jeff Porcaro... well, we already knew that, right? He was a force.
