  • Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is an incredible place that plays host to immense biodiversity, dark skies, unimaginable beauty, and some terrific scenic driving. On this adventure, we embarked on the Ajo Mountains Loop Drive which is directly across from the Kris Eggle Visitor Center. The drive can be done by any vehicle. We had originally planned on doing some hiking and went a little ways up the Estes Canyon and Bull Pasture trail but shortly turned back because we weren't feeling it. So, it turned into a bit of a driving day.
One thing to note about driving in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is that you do want to be alert for any type of illicit activity. Due to the proximity to the border there have been encounters with smuggling and trafficking, so keep your witts about you and do not wander from the car with the engine running.
This out of the way national park is truly a special experience. This is the only place in the US where the Organ Pipe Cactus grows and it truly is a remarkable specimen. You'll find these and Saguaro cactus in abundance in this park. I wouldn't recommend visiting in the summer months as it will be one of the hottest places on Earth, but basically any other time would be great.
