Backpacking In Grand Canyon National Park - South Kaibab Trail - Phantom Ranch - Bright Angel
Thanks for joining me on this adventure! Please be sure to subscribe for more adventure videos.
On this trip I connected with my brother to do a scouting mission for a potential Rim to Rim next year, through backcountry trails along the South Rim. We wanted to head into the canyon to get a bit of experience and see what we would be dealing with. After our last trip where we nearly lost our canoe we wanted to be extra prepared.
For this trip we took the South Kaibab trail down to the Bright Angel Campground and then took the Bright Angel Trail up to Havasupai Gardens with a side excursion on both east and west Tonto trail, and then the following day headed back up to the rim. It was an exceptional trip. Backpacking in the Grand Canyon is an interesting experience and I'm excited to get a taste of the backcountry. There were hundreds of hikers and it was odd to have such a front country experience that far away from the front country. We are glad that we went and feel better prepared to tackle some backcountry miles next year.

Hiking 14er Handies Peak In The San Juan Mountains Of Colorado - Wildlife and Views Everywhere!

Today my wife and I set out to hike Handies Peak, a 14er in the Southwest part of Colorado. The San Juan Mountains are truly the most beautiful range in Colorado and I'm fortunate (not lucky) to live here. It's not always an easy life in this part of the state but the wild nature of our mountains makes it all worth it. The hike today was 10 miles with 4500 feet of gain and as I'm writing this t...
Hiking The Colorado Trail From Durango - Kennebec Pass To Taylor Lake - Does It Get Prettier?

I'm so happy to be back in Colorado! This video is from an adventure a couple of weeks ago while we were in the process of getting moved back here. This is one of my favorite spots to hike outside of Durango. The trail is easily accessed by driving up a long 4x4 road which has recently been improved. I've successfully taken my Subaru Outback up it but your mileage may vary. This is a pretty sho...

I Just BLEW MY LEGS OFF - Super Steep Riding Up Reddington Pass (first two miles at 10% grade)

Well, spoiler alert, I'm whooped! That was one tough climb. I set out today with the intention of putting the hurt on myself and gaining 4,000 feet of elevation. I accomplished half of that in just 8 miles. The first two miles of gravel were at an average of 10% grade and it sure felt bad. This was only the 4th ride I've done on this bike and the 4th ride in the last 8 or 9 years I've done. So,...

Great review, thank you.

Why is your audio so echoey/
the room has a strong echo because it's empty with no sound treatment. lavs are omni pick up pattern and you'll hear what the room sounds like.
It seems super durable but they only have a 3 year warranty? Others with that price tag carry 5 year or even lifetime warranties. I wonder why that is?
Great review mate. Liked it 🤙
Very good review, Thank you! It seems a great product but... does it have enough internal space to store also a large personal computer and a tablet? ... May be over the internal insert? It would be great if you could do additional short video about this issue and link it to the present one. Ciao da Milano!
The answer is that it depends how you pack it. I would not personally put a computer or laptop in here how you’ve stated. Much better ti keep them in a backpack.
My Lavalier mic clip broke the second time we used it😞
Dang! Sorry to hear that.
Great video! I currently lost the microphone safety lock output connector. Do you know where I can get a replacement? I connected the lavalier to the receiver just as you do, but due to carelessness I lost both.
Contact RODE. They are pretty good about getting spare parts. I had to get a new lav clip from them recently.
I think you should have had the audio from the Rycote mic first before using the camera mic. Would have made the beginning a better hook for a short. Non of the less, your audio is super clean.
Thanks! You are definitely correct on that front.
Like many before you can't even pronounce the name of the trail. There is no O in Kaibab or no A in Bob.
Well, can’t win ‘em all. Interestingly enough every single person down there including rangers pronounced it that way.
@@PagosaCreative Not buying it. In my almost 20 years working with rangers here in GCNP I have never heard one mispronounce Kaibab. It would be disrespectful to the Paiutes.
Would a DJI Mini 4 Pro + remote fit well in it or would it sit too loose?
No that would work fine. It comes with a few dividers so you’re set.
What a beautiful area man, this whole episode was just amazing! 🔥🔥
Thank you! Yeah it was incredible. Can’t wait to go back.
I have recently bought a Hillerberg Savio and on wet and windy night in the mountain an,d spent the night.mopping up water inside the tent..Rain ca me in through the 2 roof vents...Dissapointed....I did set it up aqgain at home and used a garden water hose and no water came in... I am not sure w,here I went wrong Q
Interesting. Yeah, this is unfortunately sounds like user error. Perhaps the vents on the underside of the roof flap were left open?
Yes it was dissapointing...However I am not going to disagree with you that it may have been user error...I have been thinking long and hard trying to figure out why rain got in to my new Savio tent...One theory was I didn't face the tent into the wind..Rather the wind hit me from the side..The ground was also not exactly level...To answer your response about the vent cover,,,,all vents were closed... I am trying to come up with excuses why I had water in the tent..At home I tested it with a garden hose and I mean tested and no water inside tent...I have not as of yet tested it on the mountain since ...I do sincerely thank you for responding..
Did Fjallraven get back to you about the daylight through those stitches? Moreover did the tent serve you well? I have one and so far it bas been great.
They did and the repair process was a total mess and it did not get fixed. I wound up selling the tent but not because I didn't like it. I regret getting rid of it.
@@PagosaCreative Fjällräven really don't sound great in the customer service department.
Another episode man, trail looks really enjoyable!
The trail is amazing. The climbing is rough but the last half mile or so there isn't much and it's quite spectacular.
Can I use my own Velcro pads? Are the sides of it velcro or am I forced to buy their insert?
Well, you have to put an insert into the bag. It doesn’t have to be theirs. The sides of the bag itself are not velcro.
The GH6 is a fantastic camera. After the GH7 was released, I got a second used GH6 for nearly half the cost of a new one. Two GH6 cameras bring more value to me than 1 GH7.
That’s awesome and very true. I shot a live event yesterday and was reminded of the importance of not relying on autofocus. Both my S5iiX and GH7 were running manual. Now I’m going to pick up a used S1H.
@@PagosaCreative The S1H is outstanding. The S1H, S5IIX, and GH7 will be a powerful arsenal for video production!
I'm only filming with manual focus
Beautiful bike, I'm between this Salsa bike and the Santa Cruz because of the price, this one comes with better components, only they say that the Santa Cruz frame has a lifetime warranty.
I’m extremely biased towards salsa because I’ve ridden them forever and they are great bikes. I’ve heard nothing but good things about Santa Cruz and a lifetime warranty is pretty dang good. Hard to say which ones the better pick!
@@PagosaCreative Yes, Santa Cruz has a warranty, but I love the Salsa, it is cheaper than Santa Cruz, which is very expensive. I love the design of Salsa and how it is equipped the same as Canyon, which also has a very good price, but I like Salsa more. I would love the Santa Cruz, but for the price it is very expensive.
Does this one fit on the plane as a carry on?
No this is far too large. It’s an excellent checked bag.
Colorado is unique, beautiful views !
It certainly is. I never get tired of it.
Have you had any long term issues?
Nope!
Fantastic video! Did Hyperlite warranty the zipper issue? Was looking at getting this tent - but gear failures at that price point worries me a bit!
They did not warranty it. I was able to fix my issue on my own by just getting the zipper realigned. They would have had I sent it in.
howdy so where is this ride?
East of Marana
I see cutthroat and I watch. One of the funnest bikes out there
It’s a great bike! I’m moving back up to Colorado and have all sorts of adventure plans for this rig.
So stunning! And that pika🥰🥰🥰
Right!? That was such a cool experience.
Thanks we just broke our zipper
Sorry to hear that. Best of luck replacing it!
Hello from up in Phoenix! Cool to see a narrated AZ bike video.
Glad you liked it! There is so much incredible riding around these parts.
Audio is really quiet…nice review though!
Audio normalization has failed me! Thanks for the feedback.
Hi there! Thanks for the review. Could you please tell how does it perform under relatively high load (aka 15kg)?
It works quite well. I’ve used it with 55lbs and it was actually comfortable enough that I didn’t notice any unnecessary pain points. It should excel at the 15kg weight.
That’s the first time anywhere I’ve seen the roll top unfurled. Not even on the OV site. Good 👍 I reckon for a dry weather say summer trek that can be extra food etc and therefore a lot over 30 litre
Yeah there is a pretty large amount of space with it unrolled all the way. I think it's an awesome pack. Much better than similar offerings in this style and more uniquely equipped for fastpacking.
Have you ever tried using the USMC Filbe Rucksack that can carry a weighted load of up to 125 lbs and a carrying capacity of 81 Liters (5000 cubic inches) with an icu insert? Just curious how well that would work.
While that could work the whole idea with this bag is the back panel access so you can get your kit out quickly.
Saguaro is pronounced suh-waa-ro how do you not know that living in AZ?
I know, sometimes it just doesn’t readily roll off the tongue! Maybe once I’ve lived here more than 7 months it will come more naturally.
@@PagosaCreative less than seven months okay that's excusable!
Tayson is awesome! Nice to see him on this channel. OV is such a great company.
Yeah it was great to chat with him. I’ve been digging my Skyline fast pack. Can’t wait to out some more gear to use in the Grand Canyon this year.
It's a copy of the Lowel design from the '90's. Nothing new.
Thanks. That may be true but it’s a great deal.
Please use your audio gear to improve your sound quality.
Thanks for the comment. Yes that room is a bit of an echo chamber. Good news is that's the last video shot in that location. Cheers!
Bro I complain about 20 degrees weather how are you able to walk in that weather?
Ha! You get used to it when you’re in it everyday. Just stay hydrated and cover up as much as you can. And find a good reason to be out!
Would u recommend the bag and how much clothing would u feel u could get in the main compartment
Yeah I'd recommend it if budget allows. You could fit 10 days worth of clothing in the main compartment easily.
Is this compression sack comes with the quilt?
No, this is a compression bag from granite gear.
Got this pack a few months ago and have used it for our day hikes and jumping around town. Love it so far. I actually removed the foam back pad and find it even more comfortable. There’s a big Velcro on the inside just behind the bladder holder. Can’t wait to use it for a weekend/overnight trip.
I didn’t realize you could remove the foam! I’m very pleased with this pack. I hope you go somewhere cool! I’ll be taking mine into the Grand Canyon.
@@PagosaCreative Grand Canyon will be great. I’ve never been but it’s on the list. Some day. I’m in the north east so Poconos area for me normally!
@@andrewfitzpatrick9799 it’s beautiful there. I grew up in Westchester county NY. Much different out east that’s for sure.
Do you think the PDAF and crop issue at 4k 60p can be fixed through firmware updates?
No, it’s a limitation of the sensor unfortunately.
@@PagosaCreative thank you for your reply. I always wondered about this.

Great tips! Covering your skin to keep the sun off is such a game-changer! I used to get sick from hiking with my skin exposed, but I’ve since learned. I also love a wide brimmed straw hat. It breathes and can shade not just your face but also neck, shoulders, chest. 👍
Absolutely agree about the hat. My wife has one and she wears it all the time. I need to get one too. Since moving to Tucson I’ve learned so much about heat safety. Thanks for the comment!
maan u should make a video to compare s5iix vs bmcc6k ff
I could do that for sure. They’re just totally different cameras for different purposes but I might just do that!
It's really hard to see anything in your setup. No closeups? Or just seeing you add things into the bag one by one?
Honestly it’s just a little challenging getting the F6 into the bag, that’s why there isn’t footage of that. Appreciate the feedback.
Awesome video Thank you for making it 🤘🏻 I wish you would have captured video also on vertical mode.. I wonder how it would have worked on the wide angel view with the action mode 🤔
Sorry, forgot vertical! As a professional videographer I often forget that most people actually are wanting vertical for their daily needs.
the sp15 sounds pretty unusable in the wind. you know what mic capsuls they use in those?
I'm not sure. I have some foam windscreens on them but they could definitely benefit from better wind protection. Kind of hard when they're right next to your ears though.
@@PagosaCreative i agree.. i was a beta tester for the new bubblebee wind protection for that size you should check them out they just came out!
Haha, we as Americans have become so time concerned that 10 minutes is an inconvenience…..
Well, when you compare it to the two minutes it takes me to strike my regular tent, it's a big difference. The RTT always winds up a soaking and freezing cold mess.
adding a 270 awning with annex inteconnected would complete the deal
@maranavisuals What camera do you think Panasonic is coming out with next to improve upon the s5iix? I just purchased it and your video is helpful with understanding some limitations I was not aware of.
I'm not really sure. It may be an S1h mark ii but no idea when that might come out. I really think the S5iiX is the best value you can get at this price range. There are compromises at every price point.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I was considering getting a rooftop tent for my astronomy trips and campings, and found your video on TH-cam, which is extremely helpful! 👍
Good! What did you ultimately decide to go with?
The points you made in this video really resonated with me, so I decided to just use more of the tent I had, which saved me money and time. Thank you so much! 👍
