As AI advances into the world of videogames, one angle that has magnified rather quickly, is AI designed to moderate "toxic behavior" at scale.
These systems (a program called "ToxMod" designed by a company called "Modulate") are being utilized now in Call of Duty, with larger databases being set up by the likes of Ubisoft, and Riot Games, to usher in an era of full scale AI surveillance and content moderation. Good? Bad? You decide.

It's probably the 1st time I find an add that is relevant. I am certainly going to check that one from time to time.
This is so bad specially given how biased A.i. can be made to behave. Chat GPT is the #1 example
This will just further segment people to the point you can’t make friends in online games anymore 😢 o well I guess no point in me buying that game now
when are gamers gonna revolt? why are we putting up with this? Lets start pirating games and use our own servers!
Went to download only to find I already have it installed.
Remember: a fully automated system will ban you _even if no one was actually offended_
Karen's will love it
Exactly that, passive moderation is the way to go! Not that dystopian BS
i remember how i got perma banned on reddit because i was fighting and arguing with other people on subredit made for fighting and arguing literally no one got offended because they asked for it
without any verification or proof. It is a system that does not have to retain anything to justify your ban. It is the very same kind of system as seen in LOL where people will spam " report the jungler, he is bad " and there videos from many games where this actually happened because of TWITCH.
Pretty soon they will see what it does to their player numbers. Since player numbers is the only metric they ever use to determine whether a title is successful or not, this will end up destroying the only metric they think is valuable.😄
I love how AI was generally seen as a horrible idea when it was discussed in TV shows, movies, most videogames, but the moment corporations start using it for profit, legitimate concerns about it are treated like a joke. When used by small, independant creators to fill in something they can't really afford to hire someone for, maybe voice acting, they're then demonized by big name creators for it.

I remember when COD didn't have "toxicity" moderation. We had this highly advanced technological tool called the mute button.
That or, we settled our disputes with a 1v1 on rust.
It was great, people would actually talk in game lobbies back then. I'm glad I don't play online games anymore, they seem boring.
Anti-toxicity team tells it all in itself.
Riot has already started doing AI bans in the League chat. People get banned for random shit like "Karma was the GOAT!" and get then it gets tagged as sarcasm. AI is both a joke and terrifying
Sarcasm is ban-able? Sheeesh, i'm in trouble...
@@R0d_1984 it wasn't even sarcasm, it was a genuine reaction of praise. HIs whole chat record was included and he was saying stuff like "nice play" and "winnable". It's legit bonkers

The scarier prospect is if 10 companies use the same liscensed a.i. will it recognize and attack you across multiple games/services?
Riot Games and Ubisoft already partnered for an AI content moderation database. The chances of it are very high.
@@UpperEchelon imagine this a.i. working with a multitude of companies noting you ate a user on multiple services. Then if you get flagged sending the warning to other affiliates. It's way worse than you think. I was hit with a ban in my first match after the AI was implemented. I was using colorful language to describe the playeres i was matched against to my GF who was sitting necxt to me. I received a prompt a few minutes later within the SAME match. On the 3rd day of my 3 day suspension i received a 14 day suspension under the same circumstances, even though i was muted due to already being suspended, and only party members could communicate with me. The AI monitors ALL chat within the game channels. So even talking smack to a friend or relative in a private session can be monitored and deemed offensive. This is just the beginning like you said... but way worse. Imagine how slippery the slope because if a Social Credit Score because a thing? Demolition Man was on to something!
"Trusted by Activision" My god what a horrible thing

It pretty much already happened, the only games in which vc is still somewhat prominent are old games with barely any moderation besides giving the vote kick option
The eventual backlash to this nany-state insanity is going to be vicious. Nobody will lift a finger to defend these Karens.
AN AI CAN NOT BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE, THEREFORE AN AI MUST NEVER MAKE A MODERATION DECISION
Lol it is too late 🎉🎉🎉
Yes, but regular moderators also can't be held accountable. Both are useless trash.
Unlike for example the forza moderators the ai may not prey on children like their edp445 and they see someone under the age of 14.
There's a reason people have the right to face their accuser. AI fundamentally violates that right.
Its just a nerd in a box anyways.
Think wizard of OZ and how there was a man in the machine.
Fake it till you make it hahaha.
I would literally never buy a game that censored me to this level. People need to stop giving these companies money.
Ill see you on the next CoD game that comes out
@mikenicholson1388 haven't play a new COD in years. I stopped with Black OPS 3. I'll go back and play the good CODs
Good luck with that. I'm sad to say most gamers are idiots or consumers, or both. Most will just chuck money at a game regardless.
@mikenicholson1388 No you won't lol
I think you are right. I know that when I was a teen I would have hated this kind of censorship, and would not have used any service this censorious. I hope kids can see what is at stake here, but have my doubts. My dream would be that we (gamers) all left COD en masse, and the company went under because of this. They should have gone under long ago because of their MTX bull, but this'll work too 😁
Banning toxic talking. That is as loose a definition as hatespeech. Me and my friends will be instabanned for how we joke woth eachother.
Maybe you should learn how to speak English before posting something on this channel.
Hatespeech is an illegitimate buzz word, there is only speech when we speak

As soon as they realise they are going to be banning 50% of their userbase, they will walk this back.
@@pseudonayme7717 Why would they? Riot Games has been using AI to ban people for ages, and all they did over the years was to make the system more harsh and easier to trigger.

In Forza Horizon 5 I got a warning for "running cheat software on the client" figured out it was the Nvidia's overlay game filter (kinda like reshade but built into the driver). I reafhed out to support, gave them screenshots, log files, eventviewer logs, everything to prove that it was a false positive. These dudes literally tell me that the anti cheat is never wrong
Oh FFS
Are they Adeptus Mechanicus?!
Same happend to me multiple times. I even am getting strikes when not playing the game bro. The only way to play that game is really just to pirate and mod it so you can get your lost progress back every few weeks after they strike you again for literally no reason.
Funny thing is, the game is filled with cheaters that they do nothing about, kinda makes you wonder who those cheaters even are 🤔.
And I also provided them with everything short of a literal screen recording of the entire pc from start to end.
But to me they just said they don't care and since the computer did it they won't bother looking into it.
Just remember if you actually feel bad about yourself. Remember moderators exist the most useless and sad pieces of garbage to ever roam this universe.
What always worries me with all this being based on "hate speech" is that the term has no freaking concrete definition. It varies wildly and is often heavily biased. What I mean is that slurs against one race is deemed horrible, but slurs against another is either ignored or deemed not a slur at all; this isn't even touching on how some races can say horrible things about others but it isn't a problem apparently (like Blacks against Asians), but other races like Whites with single person towards any other singular person of a different race it is hate speech even if the insult has nothing to do with race (which the ADL is supporting of).
Good point. The real irony is the video game is about killing people and war. So killing good but speaking bad?
Basically any pro-White speach will be vaporized.
Hate speech isn't real
Just commies making words up to keep the masses divided.
There's even hate speech within a race specifically if they have a bad history together like the Chinese and Japanese.
Man, if only we had a "block" button or a "mute" button in online games. But no, we're forced to listen other people trash talk and we definitely don't have a button to stop that and we're so needing the AI to do something for us.
It won't work. My Alexa doesn't even know if I'm talking to it or if im saying "my legs are itchy"
😂😂
kinda dose in Valorant
If it's a machine learning AI then it's funny to think about the prospect of 15 to 20 employees sitting there hurling slurs at each other just so they can train the initial version.
Chances are they already collected the data they need from gamers.
Lets also not pretend like their not going to monitor literally everything anybody ever says (voice and text) as training data for their model. Its actually kinda genius in a Dr. Evil type of way, scraping the internet is getting dangerous now as people start to enforce copyright and social media now charges per API call so why not cram it into a video game and train the AI on a captive audience who have no choice and cannot do anything to stop it.
There's always a choice. Everyone has the choice to not purchase CoD. It's just that accountability is kryptonite to gamers.
I almost wish I could buy stock in Teamspeak right now.
...cause knowing Discord they're gonna implement something like this shortly thereafter.
I still fondly remember a time when severs were community-based and policed based upon that community's standard. Sadly, the first Modern Warfare 2 killed off the community server and we all just let it happen.
"Game devs.... Get ready to bend over and owe Unity millions if you succeed" should be a video on this channel.
Unity is trying to screw over devs by charging them 20 cents per install, reinstall, second device, pirated copy if they reach a download limit, retroactively. If you hit that limit even on your free game you'll get charged at least $40k. Some devs on TH-cam who do game jams and release free games could owe millions. One tutorial maker alone is set to owe about 5.5 million over free games made during tutorials.
I have the "indie spotlight series" so yes, i will 100% be talking about Unity. Their decision is horrible for real creatives.
@@UpperEchelon This decision is baffling, to shoot themselves in the foot. I decided to learn Unity recently, big mistake and a waste of my time, i should have just stuck with Godot but i wanted to "try something new". Even in games the pressure to conform becomes pervasive. Free speech is worth the effort because of what emerges from it. Let people decide for themselves their own code of conduct.
The only rules should be against cheating any and all restrictions on speech are a proven slippery slope and not worth even entertaining a discussion about.
Bold of us to think they weren't already implementing this and only announcing it now. Has anyone ever talked to a real person when disputing a ban? Or did they send a copy paste canned response that could've been sent by some lines of code?
Always a r€tard3d copy and paste that has 0 content of anything discussed by me.
I got banned for apparently a running a cheat program on fh5 ( it was probably porrofessor which is just a LOL overlay). And I always got brain dead takes. But I don't doubt who ever works at playground games has severe brain damage.
I imagine that in the old mw2 times, like the game would be dead, zero people allowed to play 😂😂
Same with BF and CSGO etc...
For me, it's not even about the accuracy of the AI. The idea that you have a robot "hall monitor" watching your conversations, ready to smack you as soon as you trash talk in a competitive environment encourages everyone to either act like goody two-shoes people who only exist in Disney films or to turn off their mic entirely and have a 'social' game where nobody talks.
My former company became like that. We had to prove “not using AI” against AI accusations of “using AI” when generating content intending to appeal to AI/SEO.
The higher ups assumed AI was correct because they couldn’t understand the difference, so we kept getting dinged until we quit.
Or a third-party app like Discord (not Discord itself since it's literal trash) functionality.
Wanna know how to end this? Start doing what has to be done. Vote with your wallet and stop buying products containing what you find undesirable. Be it this, DRM, or anything else.
I mean considering that there have been examples of women hearing some absolutely godawful trash talk, the idea is that some automation to really hit those kinds of people would be nice. For instance, if a lady's hearing rape threats, it'd be great if she could just say "hey, AI, are you getting all this?" instead of first getting support when posting to social media.
But, your comment isn't completely devoid of the truth. For instance, in pro play, it's generally considered bad manners to talk to the opponent at all until you type "gg" aka "I surrender".
If verbal communication is a must in a type of game, well, there needs to be a way to make sure that certain community members (E.G. ladies) don't face rape threats or incredible toxicity.
The settings on the bot can most likely be tuned to let certain types of speech through the filter.
@@SergioLeonardoCornejoWell yeah that would be one way, but people will just shrug their shoulders and buy the games anyway.
And as a Naive person what i thought about AI's potential in games was like i Imagined an AI that creates Quets, Weapons, Worlds to player's desire in seemingly endless ways.

In case nobody noticed, Blizzard has already been doing this for the past few months. I've seen a lot of complaints on reddit lately of random users getting banned and the responses they always get seem written by an AI, always saying things that don't exist in the game or coming out in a future patch when it came out years ago, or saying certain classes are cheating just by using the spells in their spell book. These AI's make a lot of mistakes and moderation should never be handled by them.

Blizzard and Riot are slowing bleeding money, resourses, players and respect so I just see all of this as a way to force in change to the industry with what little power they have left to moderate and change the customer base to suit what they think good sheep should act. Both companies got away this through yes men posing as real gamers who want video games to be safe spaces instead of pure anarchy which multiplayer is best at. I wonder how this will work in Australia. It's culturally the norm to swear, American companies who want to do business here shouldn't dictate what goes on here.
This is the one and only way to truly stop cheaters for good as AI could detect inhuman movement/reaction. But my 1 true concern is false bans, imagine betting falsely banned but the devs heads are stuck so far up their ass they refuse to unban you because "ai could never be wrong, you had to be cheating"
also I really dont get the whole "never allow online arguments ever" thing devs are on. People already take less now more than ever in online gaming, but imagine the wasteland online chat will be because people are afraid of the AI overlord chat bot banning them for calling someone a naughty word
yea but false bans already happen from anti cheat software. I remembr Punkbuster banned me from BF3 like 6 years back even though I have never cheated on any game nor do I (to my knowledge) have files that would falsely read as cheats. I reached out to EA support who then shuffled me to Punkbuster support who then told me once you are banned you cant be unbanned or some crap. No double checking or anything. So once the ai anti cheat comes in its just gonna be the same shit different toilet.

I love playing old games where everyone is super 'toxic,' slings every word you can't say and are often edgy assholes. I mean it legitimately. People deal with it on their own and it is far more satisfying to kick someone from a game who's spamming slurs while they rage out at you than having them banned from a platform.

I'm not into online play at all and the reason for that is shouty, idiotic 13 year olds screaming in their mics. I tried it for a year or two, it's not for me. I played some online games without the mic and the experience is just much better. I do agree with your sentiment though, to each his own and people should be free to make fools of themselves if they so wish.
Competition brings out the beast in us all. It isn't who we truly are, but what we are when unconstrained by the rules of society.
Rust gives me this experience. Feels like the last bastion of free speech in gaming.

The obvious solution is for people like UE to report on this BS (tip o' the hat to UE), and for us to then use this information to stop buying this company's business until and unless they stop doing this.
I'm sorry but these big companies can go forever without receiving money from us. They are not accountable to consumers. They are propaganda vehicles at this point like most media and will be supported forever by certain groups investing more money if they are ever in trouble.
Or if you want to play games, just play games offline. Or on systems that are not constantly connected to internet. 10,000's of old games to play that require no internet. If you haven't played them all, there's no reason to boot up the latest MMORPG or whatever... I'd like to see AI ban me from playing my Game Boy!
just stop supporting them permanently. when an entity shows you who they are, trust them. and then trust them to be true to their nature.
"... until and unless they stop doing this."
By all means boycott it's an admirable thing to do but if you actually wanna stop these evil practices you're gonna have to outlaw it or press charges if it already is illegal which it probably is TBH. The overwhelming majority of profit comes from whales who are addicted to the microtransactions ergo they're never gonna stop. IIRC it's more than 90% of the profit so the amount of people that would have to boycott the company in order to actually hurt the business enough to actually reverse course is impossibly high so if you're after results rather than personal principles your only options are to leverage state power to stop it.
Its funny how Activision can't get their employees to talk to each like people but forcing their fanbase to.
It’s not just flawed automatic speech recognition and high word error rates that should be concerning. They’re not using simple word or phrase filters. Various companies have been pushing to get machine learning that learns what even is “toxic” speech. So you have multiple AI models at play. We’re not just going to see flawed word recognition, but also flawed context recognition. Yeah, there’s definitely going to be some super obvious things. But also, there is no functional AI to date that picks up on cultural nuance, friend group dynamics, and so on.
A couple years ago EA said nobody plays single player games anymore. Now activision seems like it doesn’t care if they single-handedly kill multiplayer games. What goes around comes around i suppose :/

Completely over the top for these clown companies. Best to turn off any in game chats and use other services to chat. Thanks to them for making playing games less social than ever! This is why AAA companies need us to not give them any additional money.

This is the first thought I had: the games will be rife with cheaters, which their magic system cant or wont detect, and you will get banned for calling them out.

During the beta-run, they are inevitably going to find that getting rid of that key filtering step where an actual human player has to get offended enough to bother complaining gets them inundated with nonsense alerts. At that point, this will go one of two ways: either they drop this terrible idea and get rid of the AI, or they do what you predict and fully automate the process. If they do the second, the AI will inevitably start banning so many players that it will destroy the business.
Destroy the business? Good. Now that I think about it, it's a good way to protest this nonsense.
Imagine Speed gets banned because of violent behavior and when he complains, a bot is sent to rehabilitate him *physically*

One of the difference you either missed, or ignored, is how Ai generated offenses can present the 5, 10, 20 second clip immediately to the human moderator for review. A support person would have to take a user generated report, and then scan however long to find the offensive language, depending on how long after it occurred the report was created, and how accurate (time wise) a human being could think back.
Can't speak for accuracy (I agree with you there) but I think AI assistance would be beneficial.
I was playing cod with a random, he called the enemy the word maggot with an f (lol I even have to censor it here), after a few seconds he said he got a warning about being banned for hate speech. That was actually pretty chilling to think about.
so many games will be void of players within an hour
I highly doubt that dude. Why? Cause everyone will fight back by using other methods of communication via Xbox/PSN Party Chats, Discords, etc. etc. nobody will ever use In-Game Lobby Chats ever again so lobbies will just be completely silent.

There seems to be a very easy way around this AI. Third party chat services. Discord, Snapchat, signal etc. Yes it’s harder to find ppl to squad up (or at least you will use another third party app for this) but at least you get to dodge the ban hammer.
What will be really wild is when they get these types of tools to watch how you play the game and take action if you do anything they don't like *inside the game.* Single player or multi-player, it won't matter.
Hey nice idea!
I remember when Larian Studios secretly collected data on player's decisions in their game Dragon Commander to build a spreadsheet of all the political decisions the players made. Considering that even singleplayer games today are able to now send data on what you are doing in the game to friends, the surveillance of players even in singleplayer environments is already there.
This tool would be nice if it was programmed against cheaters.
Unplug Ethernet cable/play older games. Though I guess eventually we will be forced to go outside to escape this shit
@@Skylartk Some crafty devs might make it collect data even when offline and then when internet is re-established it sends the player's data to the server for analysis by who or whatever. Some games on platforms like Steam already do this, but as far as I know it only involves things like achievement unlocking.
i foresee a huge issue with people paying for games and getting banned like this. people will just stop buying games that do this. hopefully.

All those COD trolling videos with absolutely piss-drunk toxic voice chat was the bomb. I miss those days lol
Singleplayer chads, we eating good
The worst thing is, trash talking In online competitive gaming can very well be a part of the game (there are instances where It gets too much ofc) but cmon like, why should someone take it personal when someone says something about your mother In voice chat.
What this new system is doing is censoring fun banter between opposing teams In a competitive scenario.
I just lived for when someone called me the N word, and then winning over them In a match. Like "whats up, whats up" Can't we really just have a safe space to relax and not think about everything we say and do for a sec
My biggest gripe isn't even the AI. It's this ridiculous effort to "end toxicity" in online gaming. Whenever games enact strict rules around toxicity, everyone just becomes a passive-aggressive d-bag. They just insult you in less obvious ways to skirt the censors and hope you talk smack so they can report and ban you. It's the ultimate form of trolling.
I'm so tired of games trying to mollycoddle us. Mute buttons exist. You will NEVER solve toxicity. Stop trying. I wanna go back to the days where everyone was free to talk smack as long as they could take the heat.
Ask yo mom for a pacifier, she should not let 7 year olds use internet.

Oh great so now it means that languages that have a culture of casually using swears or insults in a friendly manner, as well as trash talking, will probably be indiscriminately targeted and shot down by a bot that doesn't have any sort of knowledge besides what people feed into it, which can be extremely biased. Here's an example, I'm brazilian, I swear a lot during voice chat, INCLUDING in normal chit chat. So with this I could open my mouth and then face the lobby screen again after being banned by a stupid bot. ActiBlizz and AIbros at its stupidiest as usual.

Fun fact Riot and Bungie were already using AI to gather this info years ago. Riot did have manual review whereas Bungie did not.
Remember the terminator movie? Skynets coming guys...
There is no reason to "moderate" player chat any more then there is phone calls or mail. Just give people the ability to block people they don't get along with, and leave it be.
Honestly I think I'd take dealing with toxic buttholes online over AI listening and moderating my every word online
As a game dev can we expect you to cover the Unity insanity thats happening right now? Cause seriously youre our number 1 journalist we can trust to cover and detail in any kind of news. It would be a help in our community as well.
I feel for the studios. It wouldn't be hard to have a vm running a script to keep uninstalling/reinstalling a game to hurt a studio they don't like. And installing software over and over isn't a crime. So what happens then. Unity is opening a scary door.

Yeah, just play old stuff and indie. Nothing else can really compare.
Yup, since gaming became mainstream the quality has been diluted for a more casual mass market demographic on the whole. With the influx of more money studio's have become corporate entities run by suits and the marketing department, Todd Howard springs to mind, CDPR also went that way, let's face it :(. There will always be smaller studio's willing to take bigger risks though, some of which will still break into the mass market, a fine recent example being Larian Studios.
