  • So I decided to go back to Lovers Point Park in Pacific Grove, also where I first learn how to dive and spearfish, to find some rockfish for catch and cook with the family. Not only did I caught some nice rockfishes, I also landed my personal best male sheephead. I almost gave up looking for him because he hid so well, but in the end, he finally came out and I was able to take a good shot of him at distance. This was definitely a memorable dive for me as condition was so clear and everything was just perfect.

I’m not really one to tell people what they can or can’t shoot but it’s already rare enough to find sheepshead that far north and they are one of the only fish that actually put in the work in cutting down on the sea urchin population but there are plenty of other species found in the area that can be your dinner👍🏻

What a great and illusive catch! Sheepshead play an important role by eating and removing sea urchins especially the large males. They could help the urchin problem in Monterey bay and replenish kelp forests. I hope that that the population would grow as more and more of them show up in Monterey .

i thought this was a protected area and could not be fished?

Bro! What an epic catch! That’s what’s up! I knew there around, but it’s not often you come across a nice sheephead.

Man, I have never seen anything more exciting than a damn caby or monkey at lovers, though we usually hit the west side.

There are Lingcods there as well but quite rare. I definitely got lucky with the sheephead because theres usually not a lot of sea life there

I've only seen one Sheepshead in Monterey, not far from where you are here, definitely hard to spear, very cagey fish, they know about how far your spear will reach and manage to stay just out of range..So nice catch!!! I Hear they are quite tasty??

Yeah I have caught a few sheepheads in the area and do find them to be harder to spear than most fish. They are definitely one of my favorite eating fish. Definitely tasty :)

Do you ever get buzzed by dfw for riding that MPA line? Ive been pinged by the boys in green a few times at that spot. Makes me nervous hitting the east side.

Never because I always stay west including where I got this Sheephead so no trouble with the warren at all.

Spearfishing in a protected Marine Sanctuary? NOT COOL. There Are Places on the peninsula where it is allowed but this is not one of them!
I will edit an apology to you for being responsible but hope that the ones who aren't will be informed on this and stay on the legal side away from children!
    Thanks!

Thank you for commenting but kindly do your own research before commenting and falsely accusing. That is not nice and not cool. I am very aware of where I spearfish and where is legal and illegal and this is definitely in the legal area.

@TheMegatoan According to the Rangers, the aquarium and the Coast Guard Lovers Point is off limits so please do YOUR own research. The signs are posted everywhere. Can you not read?
I live at Lovers Point and won't even take a piece of seaweed out of respect!
If this was shot somewhere else then label it properly! And yes, I think killing a defenseless animal is childish and cowardly. Try free diving with great white sharks or surfing 20 ft waves!
I'll just agree to disagree with you on that.
Maybe we both have a different opinion of what Lovers Point area is, if so then I apologize. Nice footage anyway.
This video just came up after watching a scuba diving video.

@@markmaxwell1013 Let me share you the fishing map for 2023 so you can see where is protected and where is not. apps.wildlife.ca.gov/fishing/ . As you can see Lovers 1 and 2 known as south of lovers point is illegal but lovers 3 where I fish and clearly says it in the video, is legal my friend, which is where you see fisherman with there fishing rod and reel there each weekends. I also encounter rangers there often as well and if im diving in protected area, I would get ticketed if I am illegally fishing there. Please educated yourself before you falsely accuse of others as thats not cool. Yes majority of lovers point is protected ( the tourist area) but the northwest side is fine at the time of this video. Thank you

Pacific Grove Marine Gardens State Marine Conservation Area (SMCA)
Extends from Lovers Point to the Monterey Bay side of Point Pinos.
Widespread tidepools abound with hardy organisms such as mussels, sea stars, and sea urchins, species, which can tolerate the harsh conditions of life on the edge of the sea.
Permitted/Prohibited Uses: Allows recreational take of finfish; Allows commercial take of giant kelp and bull kelp by hand.

@TheMegatoan I know that but I've seen WAY too many spearfisherman "drift" over into the illegal area and even near children. Some fishermen even toss hooks in when children are swimming within feet of them in the tourist area. I'm not very polite when I tell them to leave or I'll call the Rangers. I'm sure you would do the same thing because they give responsible people like you a bad name. I wrongfully accused you of being one of them when you are one of the educated good ones and for that I am VERY sorry. I am underwater there a lot and have seen too many people do this and I don't take kelp out of respect not because I'm ignorant of the law. Unless you live somewhere please don't try to educate someone on the nuances of the local rules and how many people grievously bend those rules. Everywhere is different as your cool travels have shown you. My best friend here loves to fish and I just don't take part. We just have different ways of looking at animals and I would rather watch them than kill them. You share useful information that is on the signs that are clear but the map is apparently not big enough for some.
I also have a place in Hawaii so I might see you at either and we would probably get along fine. Heck, I may have already met you and just asked how the water is and how clear it is with no sermon about spearfishing and animal cruelty. Keep appreciating and protecting nature in your own way legally! Thanks!✌️🌲🌊
