- From the village of Glyn Ceiriog, Church Hill starts calmly before losing all its chill for a segment at over 25% around the church for which it is named. Only 1.75km at 11.4% almost sounds reasonable, until you ride it...

Great effort on a fantastically tough climb; that hill has given me a few nightmares in the past!
Thanks Bryn! It's a properly great climb isn't it? In a sadistic way that is. I don't know anyone who doesn't have at least one horror story on it 😂
I see Dicky B has had a crack at this, 2nd fastest for a former national champ.
I didn't know of Dicky B's palmares but definitely a name I see on a few climbs around here with blisteringly fast times!
@@nickbrownbill3413 it's Richard Bussell, former national 10 champion (twice) and hill climb champion.
Oooh that makes sense, watched his very impressive ride for the podium this year at national HC too, to only be beaten by Bell and Feather is still a hell of a performance
The snaking around the church looks great, if you're feeling good then you could cut the corners and go over the steep bits. Too bad the climb is not done after that section and you need to save something in the legs to make it up there.
Yeah definitely Mick. Could take a much shorter line if you're happy to do ~6w/kg punts I think (and if there's not a van coming!), and I suspect the crown holders for this segment will have done things like that as they're likely not stressing too much about the final sections at 10-15%. I think if I were doing this fresh I'd probably still almost cruise that false flat, sweetspot rather than anything harder then go all in with my 5 minute power up the section around the church, then just do whatever I had left (probably threshold ish) until the finish line
Jees that's a bloody stonker alright. I might make it the first few 100 meters, but this is just nuts...
It certainly is mate. As I said, absolutely no shame in that, we've all been there! Just feels like it gets steeper and steeper and never stops getting steeper!
@@nickbrownbill3413 The steepest bit of road I know is the start of the Keuteberg (find on climbfinder), which is like 25%, but only for like 50m or so. After that it flattens off to an easy 15% or so for the next 400-500m before dropping down to single digits. I can ride that, but only just. I just go full sprint mode for those first 50m, and then grind up the rest in 34-34 trying not to pass out :)
I've ridden this a few times, the wall by the Church makes it look like the gradient is 45% (Certainly feels it anyway!)
It definitely does feel it! Stupid gradient 😂
Ooh i dnt know this one
It's a classic Stu! Proper brute, I first did it on the Wild Wales Sportive and it was misery.
