  • Sometimes it's easier to get your seeds to germinate in a paper towel, and this video explains how to do that. You'll see how to start your seeds in a damp paper towel, store them in a Ziploc bag, and then plant them in a container after they've germinated.
    Once you get your seedlings in the soil, you'll want to watch our videos about transplanting seedlings. • Starting Tomato Seeds ...

    I use a similar method but use TP which is much easier to tear if the root goes into the paper. I don't use a baggie, just a rectangular plastic good storage container. Lay the TP in the container, spray it with water, lay the seeds on top, spray it again and then put the cover on the container. The seeds germinate within a few days. Sometimes they grow straight up which makes it very easy to separate and plant in a container.

I placed them on 3/1/24 and been 4 days and so far have not seen any germination started on pepper seeds. Pepper seeds seem to be a little harder to start but will continue keeping them damp and see how it goes !

    Great video! My snap pea seeds sprouted using this method but they are moldy. Should I discard them and start over or can I use them? How can I avoid this from happening next time? Thank you!

    • @millsfamilygardening2634
      @millsfamilygardening2634  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If the seedlings look healthy, I would go ahead and plant them in pots. Pea seeds are more prone to mold than other seeds. The paper towel shouldn't be wet but only damp. The same applies for all other seeds. With peas, I always plant them straight into the soil in pots indoors or outside straight in the ground. They are very easy and fast to germinate in the soil unlike peppers and tomatoes that require warmth and take longer to germinate. Hope it was helpful! Thank you.

      Since the bag is closed the paper towel doesn't dry out so fast. But if you notice that it's getting dry, you definitely need to sprinkle it or add a few drops of water. Thank you.

    Hi, two questions - 1) Can heat mat be used or is that to warm)? 2) Do seeds require sun light or grow light or is that only after they germinated? Can I put bags on a window sill where's it's warm and have sunlight? Thanks

    • @millsfamilygardening2634
      @millsfamilygardening2634  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. 1. If your heat mat can regulate temperature, you can set it on not too warm and use it. My heat mat is too warm for seeds, and they burn in there. You can also put a towel on a heat mat and the bag with seeds on top.
      2. At this stage the seeds don't require sun light or grow light. They can just sit on a counter top.
      3. You can keep them on a warm window sill but I would avoid the sun light as it might be too warm and burn the seeds.
      I hope it helps! Thank you for watching!

      @@millsfamilygardening2634 hi again, I tried your method. But the tissue paper was drying up too fast (within 12hrs), and becoming crisp and dry. I can see condensation happening on the plastic bag. What maybe the reason it's drying this fast? What can be done if it does happen? Thanks again

    Does this work for roses. Or do you have to start the rose seeds in stratification process first.

    • @millsfamilygardening2634
      @millsfamilygardening2634  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For better germination it would be better to stratify them first. You can put them in a moist paper towel in a zip lock bag, and keep them in a fridge for about 10 weeks; then plant them. Just make sure the paper towel doesn't dry up and check on them to see if they haven't sprouted in the fridge.

      If the seeds are super tiny, I'd barely cover the paper towel after the seeds have sprouted. I'd try to put the paper towel with the sprouts on top of the soil first and keep it moist. The roots will easily grow into the soil through the paper towel. Hope it helps. Thank you
