22nd December 1989: Romanian Communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu overthrown in the Revolution of 1989

  • Five days before his overthrow, Nicolae Ceausescu had ordered the military to put down a revolt in the western Romanian city of Timisoara. Triggered by government’s attempt to evict an ethnic Hungarian pastor who they accused of inciting ethnic hatred, the Timisoara uprising quickly became a broader anti-government demonstration. News of the government’s crackdown was not shared in the heavily-censored press, but quickly spread through western-operated radio stations such as Radio Free Europe.
    With unrest increasing, Ceausescu addressed a staged demonstration from a balcony of the Central Committee of the Romanian Communist Party in Bucharest on 21 December. Despite the presence of the secret police known as the Securitate, the crowd began to heckle him with chants of ‘Ti-mi-soa-ra! Ti-mi-soa-ra!’
    Having failed to calm the crowd, Ceausescu was moved back inside the building by his bodyguards. The speech had been televised around Romania and the video feed was only cut after the start of the crowd’s protest. It was clear to anyone watching that something monumental was unfolding in the capital.
    Over the next few hours the streets of Bucharest filled with protesters. Unable to regain control, the following morning Ceausescu and his wife fled the Central Committee building by helicopter. Their pilot soon faked a threat of anti-aircraft fire and landed, leading to the later arrest of the Ceausescus. They were subjected to a show trial on Christmas Day and found guilty of crimes including genocide and illegally gathering wealth. Having been sentenced to death they were quickly taken outside and shot.

    When my wife was a child, she had a next door neighbor who adopted a young girl from Romania in the early 90s. My wife had quickly befriended her after she arrived. She always retells the story about how her mother brought the little neighbor girl to go shopping with them, where she started crying as soon as she entered the grocery store and saw all the food that was available. It was like nothing she had ever seen before.

      Hungary's Communism fall, thank God, was much more peaceful about six months earlier. It's interesting that it finally took the treatment of ethnic-Hungarian priest Tokés László Temesvárban to trigger the end in Romania (the guy has a VERY interesting story!). For the non-Hungarians, the reason why I said Temesvár is that that part of Romania ("Timisoara") was actually Hungarian until 1920. My grandparents fled Hungary to Austria toward the end of WWII and they arrived in the USA when my father was in kindergarten.

    To add more info: the general responsible for oppressing the protestors was shot in unknown circumstances and Ceausescu quickly replaced him with another general which refused the orders to ramp up the oppression.
    Unlike other coups, the military did not take over the government after that and let it to be a civilian-led government - likely because the soldiers(most conscripts) did hard labor under Ceasescu, so they didn’t think themselves a higher class over regular civilians, they saw themselves as part of that same population.

    As a Romanian, I grew up a couple of years after the fall of the soviet era of our country (1989). I remember hearing about Ceaceşcu back in the early 90s in a conversation about the execution years prior. Looking back, he was a monster like most communist countries at the time, making the people suffer of famine and poverty.
    Edit: Also I think the idea of Marxism was hypocritical. Since no country was able to establish such government or system that can prove Marx's theory

      The only stupid thing Ceaucescu did was that he trusted western advisors and got involved in an oil deal which went wrong ( as it was supposed to) and Romania went into huge debt. Ceaucescu paid it off at a huge sacrifice from the people but it wasn't what the creditors wanted. They didn't want dollars they could print as much as they wanted but they were interested in Romanian gold deposits - one of the biggest in Europe. That's why Ceaucescu had to go and that's why they made him look like a monster.

    • @jerzypodgorski8630
      @jerzypodgorski8630 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Plato Socrates Long live Romania? In 1965 when Ceaucescu took power population of Romania was 19.03 mln, in 1989 when he was murdered it was 23.16 mln and as for 2020 ( it is the last data I found) it was 19.29 mln. That means that during 30 years Romania lost almost all the population it gained during Ceaucescu's rule. And this is similar to all post socialist states. So what are you talking about? Go to hell with a warmonger Churchill. If anybody deserved to be shot with his wife after kangaroo court trial it definitely wasn't Ceaucescu.

      Wow! I'm surprised just how many commie sympathizers are in the comments... then again, maybe I'm not surprised...my Great Grandfather was murdered in his own home when Russia became communist. My Grandfather escaped and helped many others to do the same! When I was a small boy he warned me that Canada was set up to have an easy comunist takeover itself. I didn't understand then...but I sure do now!!!!

    Romania and Eastern Germany were the most oppressive regimes - the Stazi and the Securitate were both really bad people. However, while the Eastern Germany had the best living level of communist countries, Romania was among the worst. For a Romanian child, a banana was like seeing Santa Claus coming down from the sky. I'm not kidding, that simple fruit would be seen like a space ship. The whole life was all about luxuries such as a Nescafé for parents or a Wrigley's chewing gum for children. In 87 my mom did receive a package (only one) from a friend that was living in the US. In that package there was a box with Tide laundry detergent - you know, the red boxes. After using the detergent, I asked mom to give me the box. The box itself would look so extraordinarily beautiful to me, I cut a piece of it and kept it in my room. By the way, these things is exactly what is going on now in North Korea.

    There are many Romanians who still love Ceausescu. Because of my job, I visit trade fairs and exhibitions in many countries for furniture, and I have been to most ex-communist East European nations. Former Communist leaders are popular almost everywhere. Even in Poland, which had Communism practically imposed on gunpoint by Russians, the memory of former Communist military dictator Jaruzelski is respected among many people. But in Romania's case, I'd say 6 out of 10 people I meet are either enthusiastic Ceausescu supporters or, at least, they compare him very favorably with all current Romanian politicians.
