This is one of my homelands. My great-grandmother and her extended family left Madeira and the Azores in the 1910s to work in the sugarcane fields of Hawai'i. They were destitute and this was a time when supplies from the Portuguese mainland came sporadically. She passed away in the 1980s when I was quite young, but I remember the stories of how Hawai'i reminded her of her beloved Madeira countryside. She never got to see it again, but the place remained in her heart.
There is a beautiful story about the Our Lady in the church, it said that long ago t he church burned to the ground, the lady survived,, so when the males immigrated they sent funds to buy a piece of jewelry for her, the lady for their safety❤❤❤
