One of the greatest natural musicians of all time in our world. Working and performing with Rahsaan Roland Kirk was one of the most wonderful and soul-opening experiences of my life.--Todd Barkan
+Todd Barkan Did you ever play Ronnie Scotts with him.. I saw him twice there, once before his stroke and then after.. on his last trip to say cheers to his friends ;)
TY Todd for your answer... I could well have seen you then... I know it is a long shot but I remember Roland playing a flute (I think) and the vibe was so intense in Ronnie;s that Roland waltz through the club like the Pan Piper and out onto Frith St.. we could still hear him in Ronnie.s playing and ranting... one of those magical moments))) The next time was after his stroke... what humour he still had... and against doctors orders, he still toured, like , this is MY life.. and... BTW Ronnie's was fantastic place and so many greats loved to play there.. I even saw the wonderful Ella sing for her super ;) Woody Herman, Airto and Flora P, Sonny Rollins and so many.. )))) Also, did you ever go to he Italian coffee house virtually opposite Ronnie's... One of the first REAL coffee places in London.. no Starbucks served there )))
Todd Barkan I've enjoyed your work over the years. Your 32 reissues and Milestone albums were some of the first jazz I purchased as a youngster, and needless to say Rahsaan's Keystone Korner recording changed my life. Thanks for introducing me to so many wonderful artists.
@Jack Cloud .. oh yes I can imagine.. I saw him in London same year... then the year after.. and still had such great humour.. played one handed then down into the lower register on tenor sax...apparently one critic had bemoaned his recent playing and not playing low.. hey one handed.. as far as I can see, you need two hands to shut off the upper keys.. dunno how he did that, MOUTH/BREATH and REED control!!!
I was there. Just incredible. Cosmic Roland !

Yes, Colin, I did play with him several nights in 1975 at Ronnie's not long before Montreux, but I did not go to Europe on his final trip there.
