- A shocking revelation by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report has exposed the Indian Railways' financial mismanagement, resulting in a staggering loss of ₹2,604 crore. The report highlights 33 instances of mismanagement, including loan issues, GST shortfalls, and unfair contract awarding.
One notable case involves Ministry of Railways incurring a loss of ₹834.72 crore due to the irresponsible decision to pay interest on a loan for a development project in Bandra East, Mumbai, which never materialized.
The report also points out non-recovery of GST and shunting charges, leading to losses of ₹149.12 crore and ₹13.43 crore in the East Coast Railway zone. The CAG report emphasizes the need for proper management of tenders, loans, and projects to prevent such losses.

Thanks to Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG). More accountability the better. All waste and fraud needs to brought to light. Only with a system of checks and balances will corruption and incompetence be weeded out. Hats off to CAG. Let us hope no efforts are made to dump the report or go after CAG personnel.

As this CAG report came into light Opposition parties should demand for JPC and thereafter CBI/ ED - if Central Government accepts these demand then their claim for Transparency, good governance and promise before the Nation " na khaunga na khane dunga" will be acknowledged and well accepted

This is the modus operandi to loot public money. All the alibies for the losses are cheap, not acceptable and amounts to rigorous punishment of the ministerial heads. Railway minister can't eschew his responsibilities regarding series of accidents and financial losses incurred by railways.

This lapses may not necessarily be just lapses or mismanagement. It may be associated to favors given in return towards certain companies intentionally.

Constitutional watch dogs like C&AG of India except on occasions they ended up highly politicized like in the last year of UPA tenure, generally do good job. The Report tabled before Parliament generally speaks about the manner in which Public Funds earmarked to various Departments under different Ministries are spent or utilized while carrying out various works. C&AG's Report doesn't speak about whether any mismanagement highlighted is due to specific acts of omission or commission by any individual. This aspect is supposed to be gone through by Investigating Agencies after thorough in house deliberations in an ideal situation. But we are not living during normal times. Commonsense tells us that modern governments are run by well educated,qualified and highly experienced functionaries called Officers. Therefore, mismanagement could only occurred due to deliberate acts of criminal nature. The govt. at the Centre claims it is against bad blood in Govt.

It takes over 18 hours to travel a little over a thousand kms from Gauhati to Kolkata.
It takes just around 6 hours to travel from Shanghai to Beijing ie around 13,000 kms.
