Retro Camping Light with Modern Features

- This is a light from 1971 that is controlled by and charges my phone. I found it in a thrift store in Oregon and really like the look of it. It’s 50 years old so it didn’t look great. I gutted it and replaced the electronics. Not sure why I’m saying this. It’s all in the video.
Are you crazy enough to want to make this?

Man. The general idea, the finished product itself, the clear and concise narration, the bits of humor, the video quality and editing, everything is perfect. Fantastic work all around, really!
🙏🏼thank you🙏🏼
I've been McGuiver'ing repairs, and DIY ideas for more than 50 years. I remember cutting new tread in my bald car tires - in my university dorm room. I was doing it so that my 1961 Ford Falcon would pass state inspection. The year was September, 1969.
-
Back then. There was an art craft called linoleum etching or it was carving images on rubberized/vinyl materials. Thus the bald tire cutting idea was born. Cutting tools were readily available at the campus book store.
-
I love these kinds of videos.

Over the years, I have found, "Most experiments fail the first time."
It's rare, ideas work out the first time.
However, "persistence pays off."
If you gnaw at anything long enough, you'll find what works.
-
They were still teaching that printing technique in the 2000s when I was in school. I’ll have to remember this when my tires wear down.
Well done realizing you are not from this world! Pure genius!
Matt, I love your channel. I only have one complaint, though.
MAKE MORE VIDEOS! Your builds are fantastic, and would love to see what other camping builds you have in store.
Mich respect, keep up the great content.
honestly, your video is so satisfying. watching the idea turned into products. keep it up, and will be here to watch ur videos.
Great job on the video Matt! Thanks for making it.
Very cool
🔥
I’m so jealous of how take fed other people are.
Dude- that thing looks awesome. Good work!
Thanks Chris! It was fun to make.
How does this channel not have 100k subs already?
I've been told... if I just don't stop it will happen.
Yeah, no dude. You need your own show if this quality keeps trending up like it has been.
Great video as ALWAYS! In case that wasn’t sarcasm, the old component you couldn’t identify is an inductor (or coil). Part of the power supply, it is/was used to drop the AC voltage before sending it to the diode bridge, then capacitors… to eventually make DC power.
It’s was not sarcasm. Haha. Thanks for the info!
This is so awesome
Thank You!
@@MattTheDesigner no thank you, keep doing fun stuff like this, retro modding stuff like this is so awesome.
Sooo far beyond my scope of anything, but I thought I’d watch anyway cos your videos are always interesting & fun. But seriously, what’s it like to be so bloody useful?
It’s more that I neglect the things l SHOULD be doing and spend more time on this kind of thing than any sane person would.
@@MattTheDesigner That’s a talent in itself. I also neglect the things I should be doing & still manage to get nothing done. Have an exceptional weekend ✌️
eagerly waiting for the next episode where you fit a Komodo body into an old 35mm film camera
Honestly that’s a cool idea… do you have either of those things to donate to the channel?
@@MattTheDesigner 😔
You had room to add more cells and even a hand dynamo. Wasted opportunities 😢
Oh man that would have been really interesting.
also do you have a place for these 3d prints... you gave me a great idea
I didn’t really expect anyone to want them haha. But I can put them somewhere and let yet know.
@@MattTheDesigner please do would love to send some beer or coffee $$$ too ... I am not that great at modeling .... your designs should be up with a donate link would be glad to do so and keep up the good work I see all kinds of old gear that need a new life.... :)
@@unmanaged alright, hold the donation. I made a signup form to get the file for free. mattthedesigner.com/pages/safari-lite
@@MattTheDesigner worked mad design skills love the clean and modren design!!!!
Soddered ? How weird.
How I said it or how I did it?
Said it. When you buy something, is it sold or sod?
@@grahameroberts8109 so I did it right?
use less solder... dont need to gob it, it will flow and then clean off your iron with brass scrubber and you can wick some of the excess back off the joint... make it look good and get a good pair of flush cutters...
what soldering iron do you use? FX888D is the best bang for the buck... also you can change the tip out and use it to put in threaded brass inserts ...
I think you should use more solder. Like the old adage "more is more."
