Severance - Helly Leaving Lumon Sequence - Continuous

  • ** 1/15/2025 - Just wanted to add a few comments here. I didn't expect this video to get so many views, and I'm thrilled (BTW, I don't make a penny off of this video). I was a professional editor here in L.A. for many years (hence, my name "laeditor"), so this was just a fun thing for me to create. I absolutely loved the first season of Severance, thought it was brilliant, and have always been a fan of when a show revisits scenes from a different perspective. I didn't want to disrespect the original format, or risk losing the emotional impact that the creators intended by splitting the scenes into different episodes, but after reading all the comments, I do believe that most people have enjoyed seeing this scene play out continuously. Keep the comments coming, but please remember to be kind and respectful. It's what we can all easily do, for free, to make this crazy world a better place.
    ** Original Description: Just for fun, I decided to edit together the scenes from the AppleTV show "Severance", Episode 1 and 2, where Helly is attempting to leave Lumon shortly after her "inny" awakens.

      Of course. Seen from the innys perspective its an infinite loop. Everytime she tries to open the door and get out, she comes back to the same place. Actually she succeded but has no memories of her outy coming back by her own. From the innys point of view, it all happens in an instant, just like when its time to go back home. Now I get this scene. The first time I watched it, I didn’t understand it. The inny was fighting against the outy. The outy wanted to stay in lumon to see the process through but the inny saw what it was like in there and wanted out.

    • @laeditor
      @laeditor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +96

      Exactly. Inny wants out, but Outy wants in, and has no clue how Inny feels. The thing that always rubs me the wrong way here is how Mr. Milchick is lying to Outy Helly. He's a great character (and actor), but I'm hoping we see his background developed more in Season 2. I suppose he has to lie to Outy here, because of who she really is and what Lumon is trying to accomplish in the outside world.

    • @Somajsibere
      @Somajsibere 2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      @@laeditor SPOILERS:
      How is he lying to Outie Helen? I get the feeling that Outie Helen knows exactly how awfull it is for the innie, with her being the daughter of the CEO and all, but she really doesen t care.
      Milchick is simply telling her the truth, that innie Helly is learning that she wants to be there, becayse she litterally can t go anywhere else.

    • @laeditor
      @laeditor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      SPOILERS:
      Thanks for the comment, but my interpretation of the scene is different than yours. When Inny Helly first comes through the door, Milchick says, "Your orientation's been so much fun". That's a lie. Up until that moment, Inny Helly has angrily refused to answer the interview questions, thrown a speaker at Mark's head, and demanded to leave. Not sure how that's "so much fun". Then, Milchick says, "...we help by bringing them here to the stairwell...". That's also a lie. Nobody brought Inny Helly there. She demanded to leave because she doesn't want to be there. Finally, Outy Helly looks at the door and asks, "Oh no, I'm trying to leave?", and Milchick replies, "No, no". Again, that's a lie. Inny Helly is trying to leave. An honest answer from Milchick would be something like, "Yes, your Inny is trying to leave, but that's normal for new severance employees".

    • @iainjames03
      @iainjames03 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      @@laeditor I agree with your interpretation. SPOILERS:
      What's especially great from a writing point-of-view is that Milchick has already been shown to be duplicitous with the innies. But here he's being duplicitous with an outie too. And, because of this, his "It's amazing what you're doing" can be easily dismissed as him just blowing smoke up outie Helly's backside to get her to play along (even with the previous bit about a 'miracle') so you don't really click that he's showing genuine servility. Yes, by the end of the season, it's pretty clear that Helena knows about how innies are treated and doesn't care. She may even know at this stage - even before her innie tries to kill her(self). But Milchick is still lying to her here.

    When she says “Where am I?”, it can be assumed that this may be how she feels as an outie at times. I think, that putting it together, it may be possible that when she goes into the lift, she then appears at the end of her day, in the lift, and is able to leave through the car park. However, for the innie, they are able to leave through the stairwell, and this scene explains what happens when she does that. Alternatively, the innie is unable to leave through the elevator, as when she goes in, due to the outie seeing as though nothing is wrong, the innie proceeds to go through the elevator and work on an infinite loop. The outie being none the wiser, and the innie relying solely on the outie to escape means she will never leave, unless the outie decides to quit. Even in the case that the innie quit, the decision was put in the outies hands. This is a story about abuse of power. It is not by any means a fair or just system.

      To me it's like those invisible fences for pets or those shopping carts that have a smart wheel on them. Once the severance chip senses that it has crossed some sort of invisible border, the chip switches between their inner or outer consciousness depending upon their location. Similarly, an invisible pet fence delivers a negative reinforcement (shock) to a dog's collar when it travels past the buried wire at the border of the yard. The severance chip can be overridden by the OverTime Contingency protocol however, probably by forcing the chip to switch to the innie consciousness. Which makes me wonder if there is a possibility to force a switch to an outie consciousness when they on the severed floor.
