  • I give an in-depth guide to how to do the Italian (Tubular) Cast On, a great cast on for 1x1 ribbing or brioche knitting. It does not require a crochet hook, as some other tubular cast on methods do, and it gives a beautiful edge to start your project!
FULL WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS ARE DOWN BELOW, AFTER "WHERE YOU CAN FIND ME"

    WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS
    Italian Cast On:
This consists of a type of long-tail cast on that involves alternating casting on knit and purl stitches (Phase 1), which is then followed by two setup “stabilization” rows worked flat (Phase 2). Your cast on is then ready to join in the round. Due to the number of stitches that need to be cast on I would advise using circular needles. If DPNs are your preferred method for working in the round, transfer your cast on stitch- es to DPNs once you have completed all the cast on steps. Alternatively, straight needles can be used for the cast on.
    PHASE 1
It is important to note that the FIRST stitch, a knit stitch, is formed in Step 1 and the LAST stitch, a purl stitch, is made in the Final Step with a “half- hitch” or backwards loop cast on.
Setup: Leaving a long tail of yarn (as for the long-tail cast on), hold the yarn across your thumb (yarn from the ball) and forefinger (tail yarn), again, like for a long-tail cast on.
Step 1: Place the needle on top of the tensioned yarn, in the middle, and swing it down and under in the direction of your thumb, and back up again. This creates a twist to secure the yarn (you could do a slipknot if you prefer) and also counts as the first knit stitch. The yarn running from the needle to the forefinger is the “upper strand” and the yarn running from the needle to the thumb the “lower strand”. You are ready to start the repeat.
Step 2: Swing the needle up, over the upper strand, then down towards you under both the upper and lower strands. Then bring the needle up and over the lower strand then down, through the middle, passing under and behind the upper strand. (1 purl stitch cast on).
Step 3: Swing the needle forward, over the lower strand, then pass under the lower strand and bring the needle up in the middle. Then pass the needle up and over the upper strand coming back up underneath both strands. (1 knit stitch cast on)
Repeat Steps 2-3 until you have cast on the desired number of sts minus 1.
Final Step: Cast on the final stitch using a “half- hitch” or backwards loop cast on. Use the back strand (which was on your forefinger) to create a loop which you bring your needle up through to create a stitch. Pull tight. This counts as the final purl stitch.
    PHASE 2
Turn the work, and work the following setup row twice. Setup Row: *K1, sl1 wyif; rep from * to the end of the row.

Superb tutorial! 👍🏻 So glad you're using the continental knitting method, most tutorials on TH-cam don't so for me, as a continental knitter, I have a hard time following along but this was great! 😀

I am determined to learn brioche by hand, as I am a machine knitter and this stitch is very easy on the machine. Some of the brioche flowing designs you can't do on the machine, thus my learning hand brioche. Thanks so much for your clear explanation of a cast on I was having a hard time with. Love the 2 setup rows.

Thank you so much for this. I tried other videos and just couldn't get the hang of it, then I found yours and have picked it up just fine. The two rows after really make it work and no one else explained that.

What if I need to cast on an odd number of stitches? I would end my cast on row with a knit not a purl. How would the foundation rows work?

Just look at how the purl and knit sts present itself

Thank you for making this video - I learned something new. I would suggest a a couple of changes to help people like me. It was somewhat choppy at the beginning and stopping and starting in the middle of the stitches is not helpful. Just do the whole stitch slowly and repeat the whole action in 1 motionThen when I think I got it you show us how it will look at full speed - I found you were casting in a bit too fast and it messed me up - I would cut that part out or just keep it going slowly but steadily. The rest was easy to follow and I appreciate Instructing is not easy (neither is explaining).

I left a tail 3 times as long as my stitches and at the end of the cast on the tail was too long. Is that normal? Someone please help me

    • @KingfisherKnits
      @KingfisherKnits  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Using three times as long is a safe amount that means you’ll never run out. The actual amount you’ll use would depend on the stitch size and the yarn weight … if you’re tail left is annoyingly long just trim it to 6-8 inches one you are totally done with the cast on. Hope that helps 😊

Hi - This is a technique which I love, but which I have only ever used for a 1x1 rib. I know of this video (vimeo.com/64207243) which shows how for a 2x2 rib you can make this SAME cast on (worked as I show) and then convert into a 2x2 rib. I have never tried it so I cannot comment further on that, but I hope it works well if you try it out - let me know! :-). As for joining in the round, once the cast on is worked and the setup rows complete, then you just join in the round as you normally would.

You start out great but I suggest you write out exactly what you want to say. You apologize and redo and that is confusing to watch. Trying to learn so not explaining smoothly sends me to a different site. Sorry.
